Yeah it dosent look bad. The cabins look pretty good too. Especially that first image of the bigger cabins. I wonder if BC Ferries will give her the new West Coast look or just the classic look like the Rupert???

According to the BCFS press releases there will be significant changes made to the Sonia's interior. I wonder if the double bed stateroom will survive? Remember, this ship is destined to replace to QPR on the run between Prince Rupert and Skidegate. Also, I am guessing that 'Some Random Rupert Guy' is an insider and knows something about what BCFS has planned in the way of modifications. The after picture says to me that they intend to correct some of the Sonia's short comings. I hope this is true.

I don't think we can hope for those kind of major changes to it's 'Kalakala' like rear end. Doesn't look as nice as a lot of European ferries on the inside, but still pretty decent.

Speaking of nice interiors... That old ship built in 1969 had a pretty nice interior. I would guess that a 'whole new level of service' would mean much more plush than we had been accustomed to.

As far as the staterooms it looks like they will stay the same. Here is a quote from the BCF website concerning fares next year on the Rupert - Skidegate route:
New Northern Vessel: Four berths, shower, washbasin, toilet April 1 to May 17, 2007 Inboard Cabins: $55.00 Outboard Cabins: $65.00

Inboard Outboard, what does that mean??? Is that like an Inside Stateroom with no windows and like an Outside Stateroom one with windows??

That's what I thought it meant. I think I remember some plans/drawings of the Sonia posted here or on a link that showed both cabins with and without "views".

It would seem most-feasible to have a square or rectangular section of one deck allocated to cabins, that would allow for both view cabins for a appropriate price and inside ones for a more affordable price; only time will tell with the soon to be former Sonia.

The price per passenger is up next summer to $116.00 compared to last summer when it was $111.00. Is it gonna cost more to ride the Sonia now???

that 30 million $ subsidy that BC ferries is getting for a service they no longer provide should be good enough to pay for that boat

I got this from the Yahoo Group.
According to a Province Artical on page A12 in the September 21 issue The New Name of the mv Sonia needs to be selected by mid-October so that the ferry company can provide a name to the ship yard that will work on her before she is put to Sea and for marketing purposes.
They are seeking a name that reflects the whole North.

I'm not sure if the "Coastal" Name will be used on this Ferry or not. I think it was meant for the Super C Class Ferries.

That stands to reason, regarding the painting... we are rapidly running out of Good Painting Weather in this neck of the woods.
Washington State Ferries has this horrible habit of trying to paint their vessels in the off-season. Mind you, it's probably because all of our boats are in service in the summer, with only one relief boat available.
But I digress. Still no news re: name?

According to Balearia, current operators of the Sonia, today is her last day on the Barcelona - Ibiza (Sant Anotoni) route. The Isla de Botafoc takes over tomorrow.

So Hahn wants to paint the Sonia in Greece! Weather is probably a secondary reason. The primary one being that first impressions are very important. Hence when the media is filming her arrival in Victoria, BCF doesn't want it looking like a rusted out fish trawler. It's all about public perception!!!
