The Oaky was having mechanical problems last night, according to current conditions, on it's last two trips last night. Looks like the Coq replaced her today, wonder where she is? They can't leave her at Horseshoe Bay because of room. Already a sailing wait from each side. At least it didn't happen on a weekend!

Wow, that's odd how she sort of just disappeared...
I'm assuming she went to Deas then, because she can't be seen on any of the webcams. She'll probably be out for a little while then, if she went to Deas...

I should have took a closer look at the Service Notices.... This was scheduled to happen from the 20th to the 22nd, so Oak Bay could have some work done on one of the Propulsion Lines. But, I guess this happened a day earlier than expected. So..! The Queen of Vancouver is going to be taken off of Route 1, to operate on Route 2, from tomorrow until Saturday. www.bcferries.com/schedules/notices/notice07190602.html

For those on the Queen of Surrey Cruise Tommorrow If you See the Queen of Vancouver take some pictures. I wonder why they didn't cancel the Esquimalt Sailings out of Langdale since she is closer. I saw the Oaky Leaving Horseshoe Bay last night as we were driving into HSB.

Wish it was the Saanich, I am taking the Route 1 ferry tomorrow morning on the 10 am sailing from Swartz Bay. I will be going past Deas tomorrow, so I'll see if I can see a C class in the dock and then I will notify you when I get computer acces in England.

They're deploying the Queen of Vancouver to fill in for extra departures, now why not use the Esquimalt for some of the trips now eh? Why not the triangular route?

It's probably a silly reason like staffing levels or something.
Still, it's not very often the Queen of Vancouver is seen on route 2.

I was lucky enough to take the Q-Vancouver on Route#2 out of HorseShoeBay, on a Friday evening 6:00pm sailing, in June 2003.
I think she just did a couple relief sailings per day for that weekend.

Umm, just out of curiosity, 'Nanaimo, how is it that you can remember so precisely a ferry trip three years ago? Was the clam chowder particularly good that day, or what?

I've always had a very good memory for times / places / events.
Not a perfect photographic memory, but pretty good.
For that trip, I remember who I was travelling with (it was 3 people from my office, for some business training), I remember who's car we were in, that the driver had grapes for a snack (in a tupperware), that one lady was wearing white pants, that the car's side-view-mirror got clipped by a car in the next lane on the Vancouver's upper car deck....etc. I also remember parts of our conversations for that day.
This memory thing isn't perfectly consistent, as I have no idea what I did the day after, or before. So there has to be event involved that had interested me.
Since facts / history / trivia interests me, I happen to remember lots of that. As I try to fall asleep at night, I can go thru the various summer or winter olympic cities, in order. Same with NHL Calder trophy winners from 1967 onwards (Bobby Orr), Stanley Cup finalists, Superbowls, etc.
Jeopardy gameshow on TV is always fun. Episodes of M*A*S*H on TV can be painful, when I know the dialogue that's coming up (not the whole thing, just bits & pieces).
However, sometimes, a keen memory can be mistaken for creepy obsession. For example, if I told that lady that she was wearing white pants in 2003, she might find me a bit strange! So I learn to keep some of what I remember just to myself.
On this ferry-forum, my memory helps me to recall what others have posted months ago about topics, and also lets me add some off-the-cuff references to some historical items.
So, in conclusion: I'm not a freak, but I do act freaky now & then......

I guess I know what you mean about selective memory.
I have no memory whatsoever of the return ferry trip I took on my honeymoon from Harwich to Hook-of-Holland, even though that should have been very memorable, being the only foreign ferry trip I've ever taken. Yet I remember vividly being eight years old, and riding the train on my way to Disneyland. I remember the little cone shaped water cups, the smoky smell of the car, the black porters bringing around pillows at night. I don't have a clue when my daughters took their first steps, but I remember very clearly when I was first conscious of my oldest having an ego, and a sense of self, when she was barely two. Some of the stuff we retain because it's important, but some of it, I have no idea why we carry it around.
If your wife's anything like mine, you probably get the gears occasionally for the priorities of your memories. But, hey, sometimes it comes in handy, and hopefully, like a big honkin' computer, we've got lots of storage space.

Anyways, looks like the Vancouver left Tsawwassen a few minutes ago, heading for Horseshoe Bay.

Rather stupid idea to redeploy the Vancouver, there are two sail waits at swartz bay and tsawwassen for route 1.

...but there are overloads on route 2 right now as well. It's not stupid: they can't really win this time of year with a vessel down. (sorry for the thread detour back there)

They should do a triangle run with the Esquimalt instead of transferring the Vancouver. The Esquimalt only does like two round trips per day on the Langdale run.

You guys should of seen how packed Swartz Bay was yesterday for the 1700 sailing!!
Spirit of BC crammed full of cars, buses and people!! Too hot to sleep in your vehicle! No outside deck space available anywhere!!

My point which is why BCF should keep at least two Vs and not get rid of three due to the fact a break down makes it alot of fun. People should travel early in the morning and fill up the morning sailings so that they dont have to overload the night sailings. The SOBC ended up doing an extra round tirp last night cause of the overloads.

You're right, Dan. A system that carries this many people desperately needs a reserve vessel for summer. Very expensive to keep an extra ship, though.

We can allways go back to the old days of non stop service on route 2. That may be a better option or just by default add in two extra round trips for that night. So that there is no squeze to make one vessel do an additional round trip. BTW the Oaky is running again today so it is now full service on route 1 and 2.

All night sailings probably wouldn't be a good idea. There would be no down time for the ships, therefore, more breakdowns.
Currently, breakdowns are not much of a problem. There are 5 C's, 4 V's, and 2 S's running. 11 ships running a day is quite enough, because it's the summer. Breakdowns are only really a problem when a ship is in refit, especially on a long weekend. So that leaves two ships out of service. I'm sure there will be a spare vessel or two in a few years. It just takes time. So until then, we'll just have to live with it.

The Oak Bay is indeed in Deas Dock, I saw her yesterday when I was on the 620 to the Airport. I am now in Hertfordshire, England.

I just drove down from Kelowna today and we had a reservation on the 5pm SOVI and Tsawwassen at the time had a 3 sailing wait. It was a nightmare getting into the terminal. People were pissed off, people holloring, switching lanes. The ferry was packed. They really need reservation lane signs outside the terminal so people know if there are reservation lanes as people could miss them just sitting in the lineup outside the terminal. And it was crazy hot, even on the water, nice inside with the a/c though.

Why dont they have a reserve lane at Tsawwassen on the causeway? Was the causeway looking like a jammed freeway in the states? Is it possible to get 3 lanes heading in to the terminal and one be a dedicated reservation lane?
