Extreme weather this morning along the central coast has suspended service from three vessels.
The Queen of the North is currently holding off Millbank Sound, due to extreme weather including 5 metre seas. Enroute to Port Hardy, the vessel will hold there pending improvement in conditions.
The MV Nimpkish, meanwhile, is currently holding in port at Bella Bella.
And high winds have also forced the MV Tenaka to hold in port at Heriot Bay on Quadra Island
Check the BCF website for the latest.

Where is Millbank sound??? Karl: it's a small patch of open water between Bella Bella & Klemtu. On the Queen of the North, it's maybe 30-40 minutes to cross this open-water. See the Inside-passage schedule map: www.bcferries.com/schedules/inside/Above where it says "Hakai recreation area", you can see the spot of open water. (it's parallel to the schedule lettering on the right where it says "summer 2006") That, my friend, is Millbank Sound.

Some Gusts of wind then, I only just got back from school, if I went any slower I would have been going backwards! The ditch that runs alongside the bike path that runs alongside Hwy 17 to the East, was flowing white water! It was empty 6 hours before.

The Queen of the North departed Bella Bella sometime around 2:30 this afternoon, after having to wait several hours to cross Millbank Sound.
The vessel is now approximately 6 hours behind schedule. The estimated time of arrival at Port Hardy is 7:30 p.m., weather permitting.
The Queen of the North was scheduled to depart Port Hardy at 4:30 p.m. today for its mid-week, northbound trip to Prince Rupert. There's no word on when this departure will take place, but I imagine as quickly as possible after the vessel unloads southbound passengers and vehicles still in transit.

Was just looking at the Marine Weather a couple minutes ago and it appears that the North has to cross seas that are six-eight meters. They are expected to reach a whopping 10 off the west coast of Vancouver Island tonight.

Well they had said seas were 5 metres when the vessel had to hold up at Millbank Sound.
Perhaps there could be another delay, then, before attempting to cross Queen Charlotte Sound. I know from personal experience that that stretch can be particularly rough. Of course once you're past it, Bear Cove isn't too far off.

There's about 20cm at SFU, but freezing rain started at about 3 o'clock and things got messy. Classes are now cancelled until tomorrow at 0830am.

It's getting wrost. There has been a cargo plane crash at the Powell River airport just after 5:30 and Pacific Coastal Airlines are averting averting all YVR-Powell River flights to CFB Comox. With this wind blowing through it very unlikely that the Burnaby will sail tonight from Little River. So the people whom thought they be sending the night in Powell River after a 25 minute flight from Vancouver will be sending it in a Commix Valley hotel. That why I take the bus. Cosmic Ray PS. My feeling go out the families of the two pilots.

Looks like she is delayed again! It it sure taking her a long time to get to Port Hardy with all these delays and stupid weather! Queen of the North Posted @ 5:25 pm Due to inclement weather, including 7 to 8 metre seas and westerly winds of 30 knots increasing to storm force 50 knots, the Queen of the North is currently holding in Fitz Hugh Sound enroute from Bella Bella to Port Hardy. Arrival in Port Hardy will now be delayed, pending improvement in weather conditions. Further updates will be provided. Please check www.bcferries.com, or call Prince Rupert Terminal at (250) 624-9627, Port Hardy Terminal at (250) 949-6722, or toll free 1-888-223-3779 between 7:00 am and 10:00 pm.

Looks like she is delayed again! It it sure taking her a long time to get to Port Hardy with all these delays and stupid weather! I sure feel sorry for those passengers. The trip is becoming quite hellish. Still, I bet they'd rather have these delays than see tables flying back and forth across the cafeteria while motoring through Hecate Strait. And, these delays 'aint nothing like a 38 hour wait at Skidegate terminal.

According to a service notice posted very early this morning, the Queen of the North was due to arrive in Port Hardy at 6:30 a.m. and leave again for Bella Bella and Prince Rupert by 8:30 a.m.
This would mean the ship is a whopping 16 hours behind schedule!!! Any additional delays aside, this would mean an arrival in Prince Rupert at around 2 or 2:30 a.m. tomorrow morning.

The Queen of the North departed Port Hardy at 8:34 a.m., very close to last night's estimate. The vessel was scheduled to get in and out of McLoughlin Bay (Bella Bella) around 2 p.m. and should now be en route for Prince Rupert.
Somehow the ship is operating more quickly (the stop at McLoughlin Bay was only supposed to be 10 minutes!) and is due to arrive in Prince Rupert at around midnight tonight.
Today's scheduled westbound crossing of Hecate Strait has been pushed back until very early tomorrow morning:
Depart Prince Rupert - 3:00 a.m. Arrive Skidegate - 7:30 a.m.
Depart Skidegate - 10:30 a.m. Arrive Prince Rupert - 3:30 p.m.
As long as there aren't any additional delays, the QON should get out of Rupert southbound at 6 p.m. tomorrow night, just an hour behind the originally scheduled 5 p.m. departure to Bella Bella and Port Hardy.

The seas in the Explorer region are still at seven-nine meters. The region is about 150 km off the coast of Vancouver Island.

And indeed those unrelenting winds have caused further, cumulative weather delays.
The Queen of the North is currently operating on a revised schedule, as follows:
Friday, March 10:
Depart Skidegate 12:00 pm Arrive Prince Rupert 5:00 pm
Depart Prince Rupert 8:15 pm
Saturday, March 11:
Arrive Bella Bella 6:00 am
Depart Bella Bella 6:45 am Arrive Port Hardy 12:15 pm
The northbound departure from Port Hardy is now slated to take place, as originally scheduled, at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday.

So I guess they are running her faster then to make up time?? 5 hours from Skidagate to Prince Rupert seems quick compared to the Rupert which takes like 8 hours.
