"Man jumps into icey waters at Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal after bizarre crash March 16, 2006 - 3:33 pm By: Nikki Pena
A strange and spectacular accident at the Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal has forced a ferry coming from Nanaimo to Horseshoe Bay to dock at a different berth, earlier this afternoon. It was because of a man overboard. Witnesses tell News1130 a man driving a white truck, rammed into a barrier then jumped out of his vehicle and into the water. The man has been plucked out of the cold water and is being checked out."
This is the only effect I could find:
"Today's Actual Departure Times from BC Ferries' Major Terminals
Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay -Thursday, March 16, 2006 ------------------------schedule-actual- ------Queen of Oak Bay 3:00 PM 3:38 PM Delayed due to passenger medical emergency
Horseshoe Bay to Snug Cove (Bowen Is.) ------------------------schedule-acutal- ------Queen of Capilano 3:35 PM 3:58 PM Operational delay
Horseshoe Bay to Langdale ------------------------schedule-actual- ------Queen of Coquitlam 3:30 PM 3:35 PM Operational delay

I wonder why BC Ferries has to keep everythig behind the curtain, has anyone realized that they don't make as many news releases?

I can understand why they don't make a big deal of it. Probably for the same reason that suicides on the Skytrain line aren't widely publicized- you don't want messed up people with some wierd copycat mentality to get any ideas.

I agree, why would they make a news release? "Some one did something stupid on property we rent, today"

Then there is no point in getting media attention. My question is on expansions and break down's, why no details on the renovations, why no bulletin's on breakdowns and just a notice why the vessel is late sometimes?

Wow, I was wondering what was going on there!!! I just happened to stop at one of the viewpoints above Horseshoe Bay today to see why Oak Bay hadn't left yet!

Probably 98% of the travelling public isn't really too concerned about why the ferry is late."Mechanical problems", or some other cursory explanation, suffices for most people; its just those of us who are into ferries who want all the details. BC Ferries actually isn't that bad these days about owning up to problems they're having- twenty or thirty years ago you wouldn't hear a thing.

Firstly, this is the most open BC Ferries has ever been with breakdowns. I don't know what you remember, but before the internet the only mechanisms to find out what was happening was radio reports of calling them. Now you have almost up to the minute information. Details about the renovations? There's a press release when they go in, when they come out, and their first day back always has a dedicated media sailing. What else do you want?

agreed.
-----------------------------------
btw, the 'teaser' for the news story about this on CBC Radio at 4pm introduced it as the News-1130 story tells it, and then goes on to say '..and proclaims that he's Jesus.'
I guess we'll have to read about the details tomorow.

Who cares if they are similar? No one but us. There are disadvantages of liking something too...like being a lot more observant.

Agreed. In the land of Hogwarts, people who aren't into magic are called muggles.... maybe we need a name to describe the poor unfortunates who don't share our fascination with ferries.... how about- 'fuggles'? Just be careful how you say it.

I was watching the Noon news just now, and from the footage that I saw I'd say that the very reason that the media hyped-up the coverage a little (not enough) was not highlighted much (if it was at all); the reason that all the witnesses were bug-eyed about the man jumping off, is because it was from the upper vehicle deck.
Various media outlets say that he "sped through the toll-booths", "crashed into a loading-ramp", declared that "he was Jesus," and "jumped off the ramp into the water" from the upper vehicle loading deck, and "yelled for help, before being rescued by a boat."
...interesting.

I saw the same news story. What a nut-job and from the upper car ramp what was he thinking was the ferry must have just got underway good thing he didn't hit the ferry could have dented the passenger structure if it was the Oak Bay

The Ferry was actually coming into the dock, berth 2 I presume, but because the guy jumped into the water at Berth 2, the ferry immediately changed course, and docked in berth 1. What's with the Oak Bay having all of this bad luck lately?

From News1130.com : ...forced a ferry coming from Nanaimo to Horseshoe Bay to dock at a different berth... Apparently the guy came rushing through the terminal, crashing into the upper terminal-vehicle-deck ramp, that was in the upright position, where the Oaky was going to dock.

Sounds like a way Kenny would be killed on South Park Apparently the guy came rushing through the terminal, crashing into the upper terminal-vehicle-deck ramp, that was in the upright position, where the Oaky was going to dock. What Jackass would try to board a ferry coming into the dock! Sounds like a stunt from Jackass the Movie someone would do

Quite frankly, it sounds like drug-induced psychosis; I mean, the guy's truck didn't get past the upright ramp, so he gets out, yells that he's Jesus, and jumps in the water... I can't think of it being anything else, other than maybe (lol, doubtful) a 'JackAss' type stunt like was mentioned.
