The one major regret from my career, is that I did not take many pictures. I have only just recently started to take some of my fellow shipmates to preserve some memories of them. Kevin Stapleton got it right by taking so many photos thus preserving much of the history. I didn't. Unfortunately back in the '60s and '70s not much thought was given to photographing these older vessels. On that note, if we had interior photos of the Spirits as an example back in '99 or so, they would be just as valuable 30 years from now. Especially when the interiors are being renovated every 3 or 4 years under this regime!

notmuchlonger, you say that you worked on some of the ex. Black Ballers? Reallyy... Any stories or, dare I ask, photos? There was a time when the Langdale Queen heeled way to starboard and we wondered if she would ever right herself. She did, we did and the we changed our shorts. During a fire drill on the Sechelt Queen, the skipper decided that he would set off a smoke bomb in a forward cabin, and that we would don our smoke helmets, ( chemox at the time), and that we would proceed through the accomodation dresses as such. The passengers who were already alarmed at the sight of smoke streaming down both sides of the ship, were downright scared at the sight of us heading forward through the lounge in full turnout gear. Finally an announcement that this was only a drill, calmed things down. Mess rooms aboard the Sechelt Queen were below the vehicle deck which made for a long walk about for the Chief Officer to find us.

When you say you have driven ferries I am assuming you mean taking the wheel not actually driving them all by yourself using all the other controls and so on?? This definately is a saftey concern, LOL!!! Often visitors to the wheelhouse are asked if they would like to steer. At NO time would a visitor ever be in actuall control of the vessel and even being allowed to steer, would be under heavy scrutiny.

You know, I would've paid any fuel surcharge they could possibly come up with to sail aboard the Langdale Queen.
... and I would've even lowered myself to petty theft if it meant an opportunity to take a tour on a CP Coastal...
I digress, but... you'd think that tourists would take photos of those ferries back in the day. Photos are out there. Eh, just the musings of a dreamer.
WAIT! Wouldn't Deas have kept some kind of pictorial record?

Oh, I imagine there are old photos out there somewhere. Deas? I doubt it, but perhaps in the bowels of Fleethouse, in a dusty old cardboard box. Who knows.

What a shame.. old photos would be most welcome ! (Black-Ball-Line + BCF). One reason why I do collect most of my photos as paper-photos,as well as postcrds - one can view them in 30 years too, and you do not have to rely on electronic only but just your eyes

I find it quite ironic that "not much longer" is easily trumping any "ferry driving" achievements that us passengers are bragging about.
Maybe we should have specified 2 categories: amateurs and professionals !

I've been on the bridge of:
Queen of New Westminster
Queen of Alberni
Queen of Coquitlam
But never had the oportunity to drive any of them.....I thought they were strict on that.

Sometimes during bridge tours the visitor may be allowed to stand at the wheel for a photo-op. Occassionally we have permitted some to try their hand at steering under close observation and instruction and only in open water with no vessel traffic nearby. Also they are usually nice looking girls.
