I am hearing that HSB may be fenced off from the town. I am going to make a compare and contrast to Bremerton here in Washington. Bremerton and HSB have character and they get buisness from the commuters who ride the ferry. The fence at HSB would be going beyond what WSF has for security. In Bremerton you can go to the local buisnesses without a problem just make sure you dont miss the boat. Why keep people fenced in? If you think that terrorists can strike at any moment they can. It does not matter how much you do to try and prevent it. There will be one little flaw that can turn into a big hole. I know I am making a mountaion out of a mole hill but this is literally what is going on if you are wanting to fence a terminal out.

Totally agree. Bill Good is going to talk about it on CKNW tomorrow; I'm guessing he'll have a guest on from BC Ferries to talk about it... and/or a business owner in Horseshoe Bay. He uses the terminal quite often (I think), so he'll probably have an opinion on it.

A fence around HSB will cramp that place's style. I like it how there's no fence. Being able to run over to Troll's is the beauty of HSB right now.

Yeah Horseshoe Bay Passengers could soon not be allowed to leave the Terminal so they can shop and eat I say thats crazy What are the Chances of a Terrorist Attack on a BC Ferry Running out of Horseshoe Bay or in the Terminal getting on a Ferry and not paying would be more likely to happen but they shouldn't block off passengers from the shops and restaurants if that happens the village shops and restaurant will lose money they have to do something if they miss the 1:20 ferry to Langdale and you are hungry and bored they need to go outside to the village to do stuff I say they should have breathalyser tests for people over age 19 so they don't drive drunk onto a Ferry and the foot passenger ticket people should check the tickets if you have a car space it should only apply to foot passengers though that's my thinking

Well if they do all of this, then I know not to buy my ticket until the ferry is coming in so I don't have to sit and wait in the terminal. It wouldn't be so bad if they served hot food and stuff in a cafeteria, because when you're waiting in a lineup, the last thing you kind of want is vending machine food...

Why have a ferry terminal right in a village if you cant leave the terminal while you wait and wonder around?? That is what is so neat about Horseshoe Bay. You come off as a foot passenger walk out of the terminal and your right in the middle of the village. It's nice to have something to do if your waiting for a ferry.

There's a hidden agenda behind this. Terrorism is a smoke screen. The real reason is to lock people into paying highway robbery prices for BCF food, drink, shops etc. That's the real push behind this (now to watch news about this, this post is the frst I heard of it).

Think of it this way, Horseshoe Bay will be a big target in February 2010.

Think of it this way, Horseshoe Bay will be a big target in February 2010. Think of it this way - BCFS wants to avoid fare evasion.

Well if they do all of this, then I know not to buy my ticket until the ferry is coming in so I don't have to sit and wait in the terminal. That wouldn't be a good idea if it was a holiday like Summer or a long weekend or espeicially Langdale in the Summer the 1:00 to Langdale always almost overloads

Think of it this way - BCFS wants to avoid fare evasion. And how would they be able to do that by fencing in the terminal? When you're a vehicle passenger, you pay your fare before you even get into the terminal. If you're a foot passenger, they won't let you into the boarding area if you don't pay your fare.

it came from the yahoo forum. I looked at the topic also it was on cknw website. if you are talking about the profit snatching that is probable because BCF has been trying to get you running for your money lately. the other terminals it is integrated in where you cant go into town to get stuff because the town is a little ways away and a long walk. HSB it is different, it is not much time to walk to the terminal from town because it is right on the left.

THis is where it is stupid, if a terrosrist were to say bomb the ferry why would they get the bomb after they pay for the voyage and pull their car through. I agree with max write, its to get people to buy ferry rubber bugers.

exactly to get them some profit and they want money desperatly. IF YOU WANT MONEY DESPREATLY MAYBE GO BACK TO THE GOVERNMENT! might as well make a debate on bcf's position private or crown corporation

It's in the Vancouver Sun today, and the Province.
I am guessing it won't happen, or it will happen and pressure will reverse it. West Vancouverites are rich, and rich people get what they want.

just like on bainbridge island rich people didnt want to pay for replacement of the breakwater, instead they make WSF's go slower + get payed by the state for replacement IF WSF HAD A BETTER LAWYER THAT STUFF WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPEND

To buy their burgers? That's all nonsence...Horseshoe Bay is the worst terminal in the system to have a bombing let alone it is (currently) easily accessed by the village. They aren't going to lie to you...and this is no lie either: Tsawwassen was a big target for a terrorist threat a couple years ago...until the terrorists found Horseshoe Bay.

There was an hour of this on CKNW this morning, half an hour with a business manager in Horseshoe Bay and a security expert, and half an hour with David Hahn. According to David Hahn, there probably won't be any market/cafeteria/gift shop built in the terminal in the near future. No room except up, and that gets expensive. He says that he's trying to head off the federal government which is very concerned with Horseshoe Bay and will take their own measures if BC Ferries doesn't. If that's true, I'd rather have BC Ferries taking security measures because the federal bureaucracy will inevetably make a mess of it. Hahn says Horseshoe Bay is full of holes (so are a lot of other terminals in my opinion), not just the main access gate. He says that he's willing to keep access to the town open, if the Horseshoe Bay businesses help pay for the extra security needed to let this happen. He says they'll be implementing a security plan over the next several years, but probably won't get to the point of searching cars or bags. They also seem to be worried about people getting onto a ferry, then leaving the ferry before the ferry leaves (after leaving a bomb on board). The interview is probably available through CKNW.. it started around 8:30 am and went until 9:30. www.cknw.comLike others have said, I don't know how keeping people out of the town is going to do anything whatsoever to prevent a terrorist attack. It would be smart to make people go though a supervised access point (ie. show you actually have a ticket, etc.), but to keep travellers cooped up in that massive parking lot is rediculous.

If access can to the Village can remain open that is perfect! I guess there needs to be some sort of degree of security at that terminal. I think people would get frustrated if they were trapped in a ferry terminal waiting for 2 hours and not being able to make a trip over to Trolls or anything.

Yeah my dad and Uncle had to pick up my relatives from YVR and it was tight time getting to the terminal they just missed the boat they had to wait 2 hours for the Surrey to come back since the Esquimalt wasen't running so they went to Trolls to pass the time

It appears that they are trying to use the security angle to install the Fencing. I go back to what was mention in other threads about wanting to blow up a Ferry or even a terminal - What for ? It surely isn't for economical damage to the Island - as there are other routes to the Island. It is of no military importance.
I use to back what David Hahn said - as most of it made sense - business wise, but after he pulled that quick one on fuel surcharge....I am not so sure. I think the Federal view is a red herring.....that he has put out there and see where it goes...
I think he is looking to get - improve revenue stream from passenger waiting for the ferry to spend more money. His background is in the airline business, and since the 9/11 time - the amount of time people now spend in the airport - waiting ...the takings from all the on site facilities has increased massively. There is big money in having a shop in an airport...so transfer this to a waiting "zone" for Ferry passengers and presto you have more revenue stream which BC Ferries get a cut of the action.

As a frequent user of HB, I am puzzled by the sudden interest in security.
There is, as some of you may know, a "secret" gate leading to Berth 1 from Bay Street. The gate has a massive magnetic lock, and a sign: "Exiting Passengers Only"
Well, the lock's been inoperative for years, and BCF ticketeers direct us folks with dogs and bicycles to that forbidden gate.
Fare evasion is not a problem -- foot fares are so small. Sneaking an RV on Q of Surrey couldn't happen thru a tiny pedestrian gate.
It's all B*s, folks. Some consultant's hyper security recommendations.
Horseshoe Bay is already the most isolated place for car travellers. Trapped in that concrete jungle, there's not even a coffee machine on BCF property. Brave souls hike across lanes of cars to find a hole in the fence, and reach Sewell's two blocks away for a cup.
Hmmm .. the most dangerous folks at HB may be legitimate car travellers; caffeine-deprived and hungry. Good thing Sewell's doesn't sell weapons with the blueberry muffins.
