Yesturday evening the Powell River Queen sailed from Quadra Island and headed for her refitt. She was headed for Active pass. I am currently not home so I can not give you the excat time she was at Ballenas Island The Queen of Cowichan made a extra round trip from Departure Bay to Horseshoe Bay last nite. She was at Cape Roger Curtis at 01:05 am on her return to Nanaimo. The Queen of Surrey discharged traffic at Duke Point after her 10:45 pm sailing from Tsawwassen then sailed to Departure Bay to tie up. Currently she appears to be in berth 2. As Of 1:30am this morning the Queen of Alberni was still in Departure Bay, the Duke Point Crew must have transfered her to Duke Point between then and 5am. Hey JCA / Alberni'76: Where is Cape Roger Curtis? Is this on Bowen Island?
Also, Doug U's signature pic has a ferry he identifies in "Queen Charlotte Passage". Where is that located?
just wondering.

Queen Charlotte Channel is between West Vancouver and Bowen Island...don't get it confused with Queen Charlotte Strait (between Vancouver Island and the Mainland north of Johnstone Strait) or Queen Charlotte Sound (open stretch of ocean between Queen Charlotte Islands and Vancouver Island).

Cape Roger Curtis is located on the West side of Bowen ISland. On a clear day you can see its Navigation beacon. It is about 20-25 minutes from Horseshoe Bay.

Really? I was at Swartz Bay ferry watching yesterday, with 3 other friends, I asked to go to the lower berths and do some ferry watching, they replied positivly and allowed us to watch the ferries come in, we saw the Queen of Esquimalt, Spirit of British Columbia, Mayne Queen and Skeena Queen.

I think he meant 3:30am according to his post. I will probably be able to see her then if she is in Esquimalt. I seen her once as she was coming in or leaving the drydock one year.

Any word on that rumour about the PRQ filling in on route 5 while the Cumberland (or was it the Mayne?) is in refit?

The Service notice for Quadra Island and Campbell River says that the Powell River Queen will return to Campbell River in mid December.

Maybe the Bowen will replace Cumbie instead then...

Some one mentioned that on the bcferry list on Yahoo! I'm curious to see what happens for the Quinsam, as well. I actually suggest that the Burr may end up being her replacement, as she is scheduled to come on line in early summer. Only time will tell though, I don't my hypothesis is correct.

"The Service notice for Quadra Island and Campbell River says that the Powell River Queen will return to Campbell River in mid December."
Now I'm confused. Here is the official service notice you were talking about, issued on the 10th:
Bowen Queen to Replace Powell River Queen During Refit Posted November 10, 2005
BC Ferries is reminding customers that the Powell River Queen leaves the route for refit on Sunday, November 13.
While the replacement vessel, the Bowen Queen, has the same overall vehicle capacity, the amount of overheight space is reduced. Drivers of overheight vehicles should arrive at the terminal early, and if possible avoid peak traffic periods.
The Bowen Queen will remain in service on the route until the Powell River Queen returns from refit, which is expected to be mid-December. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Here is his message from the Yahoo! group 'BCFERRIESCLUB' (which was taken from the official BCF site) from the 16th of this month:
The Powell River Queen will receive new improved seating at car deck level for those customers who have difficulty using stairs to reach the lounge. The new shelter will be in place when the ship returns to the route in early May 2006, after undergoing deck replacement during February, March and April 2006.
The existing car deck seating trailer will be removed during the current refit, which is expected to be completed in mid-December. Removal of the trailer will allow a detailed deck inspection to properly prepare for the deck replacement project.
As a result, no designated car deck seating will be available until completion of the car deck replacement in early May 2006. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'd assume that, while not very clear, this means that the deck replacement will take place overnight, while the PRQ isn't in service; But then I noticed this line:
"The new shelter will be in place when the ship returns to the route in early May 2006"
Does this mean that the PRQ will be out twice?

It says the deck will be replaced in Feb, March, and April of 2006. Looks like the Bowen Queen will be in Campbell River for quite a while this winter. I think they need to use the PRQ class due to the angle of the dock at Campbell River. It is quite a trip to see the PRQ dock there.

I guess the time in between the PRQ's two refits is when the Bowen Queen will be needed for the Queen of Cumberland's refit

I kind of wish that the PRQ would stay down here to fill in for the Cumbie, as I've yet to see or travel aboard her.
