I heard the first half of an interview with David Hahn on the Bill Good show this morning on CKNW. One thing he did mention that I hadn't heard before was that they were in the middle of inking a deal to buy a used minor vessel. He mentioned having to have it moved to B.C. so I guess it isn't from nearby. Anyone else heard anything about this?

WSF will be selling the Steel Electrics (built in the 20's), the Evergreen State (built in the 50's) and the Rhody (also built in the 50's) soon. Also, the Hyak should be up for sale as soon as the new Issaquah type ferries are in service, but that is two/three years down the line. The Hyak was built in 1967, so it would be doable for BC Ferries, but if they are trying to get the fleet newer why buy the Hyak???

I'm sure they could get the Hyak for cheap. It may need some touching up tho. If it runs and holds cars and people then go for it. Would it be able to go through Active Pass? www.evergreenfleet.com/hyak.htmlOfficial Number: 508160 Call Sign: WX9439 Length: 382' 2" Beam: 73' 2" Draft: 18' 6'' Auto Deck Clearance: 16' Horsepower: 8,000 Speed in Knots: 20 Max Passengers: 2500 Max Vehicles: 144 City Built: San Diego Year Built/Re-built: 1967 Name Translation: Chinook jargon: "fast" or "Speedy."

She needs to be refurbished though, which is why WSF is selling her. You can listen to Hahn on www.cknw.com You have to sign up though, and go to the audio archive and it starts around 9:07am.

ya right they wouldnt get the hyak maybe the evergreen or a 130 but the hyak they are abusing my dad's company will be working on the engines in the next month or so after they move to the yards on harbor island I'm sure they could get the Hyak for cheap. It may need some touching up tho. If it runs and holds cars and people then go for it. Maybe they're buying the Hiyu. She hasn't been used in years and WSF had planned on selling her to the state department of corrections.
What's the definition of "minor vessel" in terms of size and capacity?

Narrow car lanes (especially the outside lanes), age (it was built in the late 40's and went through a very costly rebuilt in the early 90's), and it's restricted to routes that don't cross major shipping lanes and don't go more than 0.8 or 0.9 nautical miles from shore (has something to do with the below decks configuration). -- LB

The Hiyu is pretty slow, I don't know if it would be an improvement on any of the current vessels. The more I think of the Hyak, the more I like it. I'm not sure if it would be brought on to immediately retire a previous ferry. What if it went on HSB-Snug Cove to free up the Cap for the SGI? That would free up the Bowen to provide relief to the other minor vessels.

I think the Hyak would be a neat ship for BC Ferries to purchase! But for which route! Kind of big for Bowen Island isent it?? Could it fit into Snug Cove?? What about for the Earls Cove run??

What route could use the high passenger capacity to its advantage? It would have to be a short route that normally doesn't have food service. Maybe with a refurb they could add a better restaurant.

It sounded like it was going to be an issue getting it shipped to BC so I'm pretty sure it's not from Washington.

Sounds like they are going for the MV John Atlantic Burr - and cut up and shift job - then put back together and add a bit more.
BC Ferries - a dice & slice job. It's about the only thing they know how to do - with out the dice falling off....

This vessel is very similar to the Klitsa, with both of them designed by Marine Design Associates in Victoria. Give it a couple years and we'll have a fleet of Klitsa clones plying the waters of British Columbia!

Intresting...maybe they're replacing the Klitsa with her? Maybe just a relief on the Southern Gulf Islands.

Intresting...maybe they're replacing the Klitsa with her? Maybe just a relief on the Southern Gulf Islands. Yeah I'm wondering myself where the heck this thing is going to be redeployed. They given a substantial amount to upgrade, so stretching as was mentioned in today's Province article is not that out of the question. She will also recieve a passenger area, and must be (but not stated) be recieving an area for some crew as the min. "2" listed on that posted site is far below Transport Canada's requirements for a vessel that size I believe.
