The BC Coast has never in the last 45 years had any real competitions for BC Ferries. Even the way it came about was rigged. I think we should open up and accept other possible operators to the coast and try there service, if it is crap then you don't travel with them again - hence they are out of business.
So for Harbourlynx to still be around - after David Hahn mention that it would be out of business within 6 months shows how much he really understands about small - startup business. His track record is with very old business - where you don't have to be a genius to see what has to be done to fix it, as for starting up a Ferry business - with out any help from the Government - and still see it running - against all the talk from the management of BCFS & Unions - I think is well done. I myself would like to see a lot more small ferry companies come along and services some of the smaller islands. Yes they may need help - but a small local business with give much better care & service than a State run business any day.
A few members on this forum have already asked - why don't the islanders start there own small ferry service. More to the point why doesn't the government encourage companies to come to the coast and start up a service to the small Gulf Island?
If you think the service is crap then you don't travel on it if you have a choice - very quickly they will get the idea and offer a service, were as with BCFS - they don't really give a damn - as there is only one operator and it is a take it or leave view - which I know is not correct and generally the staff of BCFS are very good and helpfully.
Ride comfort on a Harbourlynx and a BCFS - different vessels - different shapes and speed. Can you compare apples and oranges ? Do they taste the same ?
