Not that simple. Maracibo is a great place and My mom was a member for 17 years until she moved to Saltspring. They aren't snobs like some people who want to get them out to build a bridge. Would you want someone to get bankrupt to put a highway through your property?

I don't think building bridges will bring in more people to live on the Gulf Islands. The winners then would be the people / families who sell out - houses and land - and why did they move to the islands in the first place - most like to get away from the rat race and have a nice easy life. I don't think money made that big of an impact - so I don't think they would be sellers of land or property.
So without the additional people - you just can't justified the cost of building bridges - links.
Yes I do agree - there are one of two or even three places where a very short bridge would work - but then again - these smaller island have only around 600 people living on them - and the cost per 600 people - I am sure the BC Government has a lot more important things to do with the funds than build bridges linking small - low pop - island together - thereby doing away with a ferry business - just because there is a few labour / union problems.

Who will the bridges be primarily for? Gulf Islanders. And they wouldn't go for it in a million years. You're right, besides, I like the Gulf Islands the way they are now, and I don't really want them to change too much.

Can the cumbi cross the gulf? In the summer months? in the winter months?. The Cumbie was build to carry passengers in the waters of the gulf islands, She is classed as a home trade 4 To sail to Vancouver with passengers I believe it needs to classed as home trade 3.

1 bridge to saltspring from crofton wouldn't hurt commute too much, a small bridge, Howe Sound Queen would fit perfectly into service from Swartz Bay, Mill bay is planned to be bought by me in the future, What should I call my ferry company if I buy the mill bay?

Well if we had sold our house and property when the Queen of Victoria was being sold, we probably could of afforded her, but I'm not interested in buying the ferries.

I am moving to sidney as I said, I will probably be taking a boat trip with my own boat around to sidney spit and back, have a barbeque on the beach while we are over there.
I would like to own the old mill bay ferry, and run our own little ferry service across to somewhere.
Does Mill bay have capacity of 16 cars or 18 cars? I thought it was 18 cars.

it says in on this page: www.britishcolumbia.com/GuestWriters/armstrong_ron/millbayferry.htm ''Victoria machinery depot was contracted to build a replacement. Launched in 1956, she was an all steel construction, 125 feet long with a capacity of 18 cars (two more than the older ship), and she also received an eight-cylinder Gardner diesel engine.''

Harry,
The info you have just posted on the Brentwood - Mill Bay - well you shouldn't believe everything you read.
The name of the vessel is actually MV Cascade - not the SS Brentwood.
If you remember the SS means "Steam Ship" where the first vessel on this route was a Steam Ship - she changed to MV in 1926. The name change again in 1948 to MV Brentwood. Wilf was the second Engineer on the Brentwood. Williams was the first engineer on the Cascade then the Brentwood. Wilf is credited with the photo. Armstrong made a short Video - back in 1998 - which was shown then on Rogers cable.

The Mill Bay actually had an overload on Monday when I was on it. It's a neat little boat, but not a lot of room to live in!

When I saw the Mill Bay on Sunday she was full right up. Any more cars and they would of been left behind! I also saw the Quinsam yesterday and she was full right up to around 11am from Gabriola! That must be a busy sailing cause other times I have seen her at the same time and she is always full on that sailing!

Re: the Salt Spring access from Galiano...the chances of a public bridge / road running down the middle of Maracaibo (that entire peninsula of Long Harbor) are equarl to the snowball's chances in h%LL. Like MacWrite said Maracaibo is a private club / community. Further, the geography of Galiano doesn't permit a cost-effective road. (Mt. Sutil & Mt Galiano are in the way)
The "bridges" section of the Wright report was speaking specifically of elimanating service to places like Saturna (two short bridges from Mayne, via Samuel Island), Gabriola (Dodd Narrows) and the 40 ft wide Thetis/Kuper canal. Something like a bridge over Trincomali Channel there wouldn't make sense, VS over Wallace Island to Fernwood.

Any idea how deep Trincomlee Channel is between Galiano & that part of Saltspring? I think it's pretty deep, and wouldn't be cheap or easy to anchor ANY bridge.
