I went on Queen of Cowichan again today on the 3pm from Nanaimo. We slowly left the dock and then the captain came on and warned everyone about the horn and to cover childrens ears because the horn was very loud, then the horn blew 2 seconds later, It was the classic old 3 tone horn! I was suprised, I had really thought they were changing the horns in refit, but it just so happens that the captains must not hold the button down long or hard enough for that great chord to sound, and I even went and got a closer look at the masts above the bridges and they do still have all 3 horns. I'm glad I recorded it on my video camera ;D

I like it when the ferries are going through active pass and they blow the horns at each as they go through or when sound some shorter honks as they are going through. I also like the echo through the active pass.
One thing I've noticed about Hb is that they almost never sound the horn when going to Langdale. They really should to warn people, especially when the Esquimalt is running, and she has to back out halfway to Bowen Island.

Yeah I worry when I don't know if they're gonna blow the horn when I leave Horseshoe Bay if I'm ever there because I've noticed some captains really like to push the throttle all of the way out of the dock, But I prefer them do that after they blow the horn to leave. When Oak Bay was filling in for Surrey last year in March, I went on her to Langdale and they never blew the horn leaving the dock at either end, kinda really let me down

Keep one or two ears covered ya never know. Think about those red lights you see on emergency and matinence vehicles there puttin them on for nothing when the horn doesn't blow the two signs of the horn blowing the red lights and the announcements both and you got a sure deal also has anyone noticed when they blow the horns at a low tone in the morning

The interesting thing is that it's not just us being picky by criticising it. Rather, it's just very difficult to grasp the meaning of what this kid is trying to say........the writing is that bad. Consider this example: emergency and matinence vehicles there puttin them on for nothing when the horn doesn't blow the two signs of the horn blowing the red lights and the announcements - spelling for: maintenance, puttin - the whole logic of this excerpt baffles me. What is this kid trying to say? If it's worth posting, then please make it understandable. That's what language was created for. I see this kid post the occasional good-writing post, so I believe that this is an example of lazy inconsistency. Please strive to be more consistent. You can do it.

Okay this is what I want ya to think
Keep one or two ears covered ya never know. Anyone notice those red lights you see on the outside decks there puttin them on for nothing when the horn doesn't blow the two signs of the horn blowing the red lights and the announcements from the captain both and you got a sure deal there gonna blow it. So why do they need them is it a sign for them to leave? Also has anyone noticed when they blow the horns at a low tone in the morning

Well it can be hard to hear the announcements going on when you have a big outboard going at the back of your boat, and I don't know about you guys, but I don't notice the lights flashing when I'm not on the ferry, but only when I'm outside and we're about leave then I notices them. But the horn is the easiest way to warn people in little boats that the ferry is about to leave, because you can hear it the best over the boats engines noises. I think they blow the horn with a really short blast in the morning without even considering a chance to hear the 3 note chord, because most people are still sleeping in the morning.

The only terminals I think where you could blast the horns full blast all day would be Tsawwassen and Duke Point as there is no houses around the terminals. Swartz Bay you also have all those houses on both sides of the terminals and you have houses that overlook berth 1. So when a V class is in service then you could probably here it pretty well from inside you house. Although it's not so bad now cause the Queen of Esquimalt is out of Tsawwassen so you dont have a V class blowing there horn at 7am except when the SOVI is out of service. The SOVI and SOBC horns arent all that loud as far as a big blast so I have been on the 7am sailing and I think they still do blow the horn. Also the Mayne Queen Cumberland and Skeena have loud horns too. And the Mayne Queen and Cumberland first sailings from Swartz Bay are like 510 and 520am. And 6am on weekends.

I have never heard them sound at duke point. A friend of mine lives in tswwassen and he hears the horns all the time, but really faint.

I think he means he hears the Tsawwassen ferries from Tsawwassen. But you know what, I am at Victoria Airport all the time, as we fly, but on nice quiet days you can hear the ferries blow their horns, mostly the V class as theirs are the loudest. They are pretty faint but you can hear them if you listen closely. One of the lighthouses I think it's at Race Rocks or somwhere out there, the foghorn there sounds like the Spirits horn.

It would be so nice to hear a V-Class horn again. The last V-Class horn I heard was Esquimalts when she was leaving HSB last summer, but she only has 2 horns so it's not the same, but I think it's the same way with Saanich. But Vancouver has the classic one just by how it does each note one by one ;D

those red lights are near the gates for the foot passenger ramps and on the car decks near the doors. they are there and go off when the ship is about to leave not everytime the horn(whistle) sounds.

The Vancouver's horn sounds the best. First 1 note comes on and then the last two notes. It's a very distinct sound coming into Active Pass.

I was on the Vancouver today and leaving Swartz Bay her horn sounded like the Gulf Islands ferries. As we entered active pass it was the 1 tone. Then as we transited the pass, she really blew it. Oh man, for some reason that one sounded really loud. Coming back tonight never heard it as we left Tsawwassen as I was in the Cafeteria, active pass again, she blew the big loud blasts going through the pass. It was different though that one sounded leaving Swartz Bay was just like a little Gulf Island ferry's horn. Can they change the sounds of the horn or something??? Cause the rest of them dident sound like that at all.
Also just noticed the different layout in the Cafeteria on the Vancouver and Esquimalt than on the Saanich. You line up in the middle on the Vancouver which makes the lines back up all the way to the Gift Shop where as on the Saanich the line goes to the left and right along the windows. I just realized that.

That's weird about the Vancouvers horn. I thought she had the best horn, I hope they didn't wreck it. By the sounds of the way you described the cafeteria layout on Vancouver, it sounds like it's like Newwest now by how the line goes down the hall to the gift shop. Those halls are narrow, and to try and get through there isn't fun when you want to try and get outside or something.

I remember last summer when we had to wait 3 sailings coming back to the island we got on the Queen of Vancouver 8pm sailing and lineup for the Cafeteria went as far back as the brocure racks on the one side by the mens washroom. You notice how on the New West and Naniamo the Snack Bar is right by the Cafeteria and on the Vancouver and Esquimalt that area is the Gift Shop. Same area on the Saanich is just seating.

( a little off topic ) Although you might get shorter lines outside of the caffeteria door on the Queen of Esquimalt and Queen of Saanich, the line down the middle (such as on the Q. of Vancouver or Q. of Nanaimo) really does make for better views. Having a line-up down the side (along the windows) not only puts standing people in front of the windows, it also requires bulky walls to separate those people from the tables.

Hey does anyone want a copy of my recording of the Queen of Cowichans horn blowing at full 3 chord? I got the mic. going off of my computer and played it on my TV through my video camera. It's recent too, I recorded it February 5th 2005.
