Dad just remembered 2 stories i thought id mention
One time the klataw and the kulleet were travelling across on a regular run, when dad in the wheelhouse got word of a steering failure on the kulleet, so the klatawa was called to the drifting kulleet, and the ships were lashed together so that the klatawa could tow her back, now if you've never been on the klatawa, you'll know that she was never meant to tow anything, so when they finnally towed her to the dock, the klatawa was getting pooped, the engines were reaching thier limits, and there was not much that they could do, they gave the engines a 20 minute rest befoe pulling the kulleet into the night berth, while the klatawa, pulled into the slip, just in time to off laod her cars. a full 55 Minutes late.
Another time the vesuvius was substituting for the klatwawa on the albion run, when pulling into the dock, the current grabbed the queen, and decided to try and giver her to the break water that resided between the dock and the parking lot on the albion side, it was only the quick thinking of the captain (dad) and the engineer (John Scwirmer) that fixed the situation a few meters from shore. The ship was run by an old fashioned ships wheel, and by an onld style telegraph system. which made the ship respond faster. the thing was so close. that the kulleet, actually radioed to see if the ship had indeed run aground, and was wanting assistance.
another time a small luxery yaht ran ashore and a set of log booms near albion, the klatawa was ordered to respond (by the coast guard) and they hauled the small pleaure craft off with no trouble at all ( the ships have 2 750HP Diesel engines) one at each end to accomidate the props

Last Thursday the Sea to Sky was closed and 2 crew members couldn't get onto the Queen of Coquitlam for her maiden run of the afternoon watch... but then thery arrived about 15-20s after we pulled out. They obviously threw the ship itno full reverse because we SLAMMED back into the dock (85 000 car alarms went off, my parent's car included), they hoped on, we left.
Obviously they weren't essentail crew members???

who the hell would put thier car alarm on when on a ferry? where are they gonna go? You can only turn it off, at least on our cars, if you put it on valet mode. That turns off a bunch of stuff we do want on, so we don't do it. and on my car specifically, you turn it off by ripping it out of the car. But it's also a lot less sensitive.

Last summer on the Nanny they made and announcement saying for passengers to turn off their car alarms so they wouldn't go off while the ship was taking off.

People are so goofy sometimes, I mean who is gonna break into a car on a ferry and where are they gonna go?? I mean I guess someone could break in a steal stuff but the car aint going anywhere. But you would be pretty stupid to break into a car on a ferry.

Acrually the story about the chickens loose on the car deck was mentioned in the Banerman book. The Queen of Victoria was in rough seas and it was the cause of the chickens getting loose.

Even worse with the BMW's on the Nanny going to the Walker-Point cottage on SaltSpring for the weekend...... New BMWs, depending on the model 1999+ don't have alarms anymore, unless you pay a lot to have one put in. Just an aside...

True. August, 1993/ Queen of Coquitlam, ex Dep.Bay - HSB, A "lady" parks her covertible Mustang in the port tunnel on the main car deck. The top is down. The "lady" applies the "Club" anti theft device to the steering wheel of the mustang. (it might get scooped I guess). The top is left down on the Mustang throughout the trip. (well it was sunny out) "Lady" leaves the keys in the ignition! who's gonna scoop a Mustang off a ferry. "Lady loses the key to the "Club anti theft device" Tow truck is called to revove Mustang. Total delay to the ship? 45 minutes

Well I dont know if this would be considered crazy but when I was on the Cumberland yesterday they had a little board with news articles and there was this one article about a dog, who ended up being stuck on the Cumberland overnight. The dog apparently got onboard somehow after she was tied up for the night, and was on the rubbing streak of the vessel all night and the next morning the Cumberland sailed all the way to Galiano before someone noticed the dog. You think other ships would of noticed the dog. Never fell overboard or anything. Dog was then reunited with the owner when they arrived back at Swartz Bay. This was like 2003 or 2004 I think it was. You know anything about that story Mr Engineer???
There was another story about passengers who got mixed up cause the Cumberland and Mayne Queens switched berths one night. Just thought I would share that.

"Rubbing streak." By this do they mean the apron AKA the skirt?

actually it's called the rubbing "strake". It is the part that sticks out all along both sides. It acts as a bumper or rubber and is there so that the actual hull does not come into contact with any part of the berth.
