Does anyone remember this book? I got it for Christmas one year when I was a kid ( 1977 probably ). I've still got it, but it's pretty thrashed. The photos were all in black and white, but it had a pic of each ship on one side, and the technical spex on the other. A very concise and no-nonsense guide of the B.C.F. fleet in the mid 70's. The author ( Peter Favell ) was an officer on the Queen of Nanaimo, I think. A most interesting read today.

I have a copy of that book. In fact, I can remember seeing one in a book store recently... it was in "the Haunted Bookstore" in Sidney, on the island (post if you want directions to the exact location of the book).
Quite an interesting little book. There are a few different sections, including one with what you described, Clay. Because it was published in 1974, none of the soon to be V-Class are lifted in the pictures, and because the Queen of Nanaimo was in the process of being stretched when the book was being written, there is a photo of it before it was stretched.
Other interesting sections include photo journals of both the re-building of the North Island Princess, and of the process of streching the Burnaby-Class and the soon to be V-Class.

I just happened to find mine in a garage sale a couple of years ago. I also have the Dogwood Fleet book too, its pretty neat, it has storys of voyages back in the 60s and 70s. There's even a cool picture of the Chinook II I think beached up on Snake Island outside of Departure Bay. Don't know if it's a good idea to scan it and post it on here because I think theres a copyright.

Yeah I also have the Dogwood Fleet book too. Do any of you have a book called Ferry Tales?? It's got a whole bunch of different ferry stories, from the BC Ferries and WSF fleet. It's kind of neat and some of them a funny too.

No I don't have it, sounds creative though. Is it pretty old or fairly new?

The full title of the book is "Ferry Tales from Puget Sound and Georgia Strait" It's fairly old, 1990
Stories, Poems & Anecdotes Collected by Joyce Delbridge.

Here is a list of the books that I have about BC Ferries.
1) The Ships of British Columbia - Gary & Patricia Bannerman
2) The Dogwood Fleet - Cadieux & Griffiths
3) The Queens of British Columbia - Peter Favell
4) Ferryboats of British Columbia - Richard P.R Porter & David Jones
5) BC Ferries Exploring British Columbia's Coastal Waterways
They are all exellent books! I will have to try and find that book about Ferry Tales. Sounds like it would be interesting.

I have Ferry Tales, but it's mostly Washington State Ferries, but there are a few stories in BC, including one with the old North Vancouver Ferry System.

yeah, I do also have the BC Ferries Exploring Coastal Waterways too.
The Ferry Tales has a few BC Ferries stories in it, still there are lots of great stories in there. Even though most of them are WSF but I like WSF so it's all good!

The next ferry-related book that I plan to read is 'Pacific Princesses' (I can't seem to remember the author), a big hardcover coffee table book that chronicles the the predecessors of BC Ferries, namely the princess ships of the CPR. It does cover right up to, and including the BC Ferries. Quite an interesting looking book, with a wide range of good quality photos.

Have any of you seen the book that's simply titled "Spirit of British Columbia" with the official BC Ferries (dogwood) branding on the front? I found it in a used bookstore on the island. It seems to have been published to commemorate the new ship. inside is both a chronology (with pictures) of the building of the ship and 2 pages devoted to each deck (one page with the deck's configuration, and another with a rundown of what's on that deck). I was amazed to pick up this rare find for only $2! (I also bought "BC Ferries - Exploring British Columbia's Coastal Waterways" for only $1!)

Where the hell do you guys get all these books about ferries??? I've NEVER seen a single book on them. How come they aren't respected more like they would be in Washington? Because people these days are just plain greedy. Our government should take action on these whiners and start bringing back the whip.

I cant remember where I have gotten all my books as some have been gifts and some I have got on my own.
Do any of you have the Welcome Aboard Video by BC Ferries??? I bought that one time on the SOVI years ago. It's pretty good. I also have the documentary on the Building of the Skeena Queen that was on the knowledge network that I taped of TV. Also very good.

Used book stores are the best places to find old books about the ferries. I know of a bookstore in downtown Vancouver that has a copy of the Dogwood Fleet. Also, I know of a bookstore in Sidney, on the Island, that has The Queens of British Columbia and The Dogwood Fleet. But generally most big used book stores seem to have something.

The bookstore in Sidney is called Tanners Bookstore. Been in there a few times. That is the biggest one in Sidney and the only one I know of.

Tanners is a good store, but it only carries new books. There are two good used book stores that I know of in Sidney: Beacon Books (on the main drag), and The Haunted Bookshop (just off the main drag, on the north side, in the same area as Starbucks).
Also be sure to get to Compass Rose Books, which is full of nautical books (new and used, though I couldn't find any ferry related used books). There's a few good new BC coastal shipping themed books at Compass Rose.
Post if you need directions to any of these stores

We got most of our books from ebay. I am waiting for a copy of "BC Ferries Exploring British Columbia's Coastal Waterways" to come from the UK. My son already has that book with the Queen of Oak Bay on the cover. It is hard to tell in the pic from ebay but it looks like the Queen of Saanich is on the cover of that one. I am thinking maybe they changed the cover for expo because there is also red in the lettering.

Yesterday I went down to the States to Bellingham to a fishing store called Yeagers. I looked at the bookshelf and found that book Ferry Tales, I was suprised to see it because I thought it was an old book. I thought about buying it but I didn't have 10 dollars though
