;DThis poll is in honour of Scott, who was on the receiving-end today, on the Cowichan at Departure Bay.
LATE CORRECTION: It's Harry's Cat that may attack, not a dog....

. How's that stain coming out of your pants, Scott? I'd better clarify for you who weren't there: The stain was in the lower part of the pant leg, below the knee......isolated to a small area.

Oh yes, what fun it was to be pooped on by a seagull while sitting on a lifejacket locker... I got most of it off immediately when it occured. After washing it off, it eventually dried still leaving a noticable spot on my pants for the remainder of the day... How's that stain coming out of your pants, Scott? When I got home I literally poured a ton of Shout on it, and scrubbed that spot to death with a brush. Right now it is in the Washing Machine... I will let you know the results...... ;D

That's Good Luck According to my Mom I didn't get pooped on by a seagull on a ferry but I did in California in July 2004 and some intresting luck happened I was in Disneyland the next day and was in line for the Autopia Ride and they give you a Autopia Liscense and this one happened to say on the back "You Won Go to the Autopia Store to Claim Your Prize" So immidiatly in my head I thought of the Seagull that pooped on my hat. Odd Story Huh?

Hey Scott: I love your hi-intensity photo of Queen Of Surrey in Howe Sound. Isn't that the most dramatic mountainscape anywhere? And right in our back yard! PS: A while ago, I mentioned the movie "Double Jeopardy", which featured MV Tachek in Howe Sound in some scenes. HS was supposed to be Puget Sound in the story -- but there's no comparison. We've got the beauty.

I've always liked the Tachek/Quadra Queen's sort of updated-classic (progressive conservative?) small ferry lines- and I DO like that blue and green colour scheme! Really nice photo, Brian.

Re Tachek: The paint job was temporary for the movie, pseudo-WSF; and the stick-on name is "Puget Islander" I think. Movie trivia: There's a dramatic scene where the 1964 Ford carrying Tommy Lee Jones and Ashley Judd rockets off the car deck and sinks in Howe -umm, Puget Sound. The wide shots were filmed off Porteau Cove, but the DVD commentary tells us that the underwater escape was shot in a tank in Mississippi. Cleverly cut together, you can't tell what's where. Approaching Porteau Cove- Whoops! Splash. Floating in Howe Sound ... .. and swimming in Mississippi.

But actually I photoshopped the Oak Bay into that background... It consists of the background I took of the stern off the Esquimalt the other day ( community.webshots.com/photo/550387776/2480281040085084278NJLWxj), and a photo Kevin took of the Oak Bay ( www.pbase.com/kstapleton/image/45035210. Here is a less "high-intensity" version of that pic...

I knew it! Although I wasn't feeling brave enough to call you on it, Scott. I actually thought that you were waiting to see how long it would take one of us with a good enough eye to figure out that's a splice. I guess I felt that it would be unfair for me to have called it first considering that i had been with you on the Esquimalt, and remember that same landscape, minus the Oaky. ...Maybe this was you taking that very same picture, Scott: [glow=blue,1,300] www.ferrypicsbygraham.fotopic.net/p29290195.html[/glow]

PS: A while ago, I mentioned the movie "Double Jeopardy", which featured MV Tachek in Howe Sound in some scenes. HS was supposed to be Puget Sound in the story -- but there's no comparison. We've got the beauty. I cannot believe they tried to pass this off as 1. Whidbey Island and 2. a WSF vessel! We simply do not have the dramatic mountains right to the edge of the water like that (and lets face it, while I love my state and Puget Sound, we've mucked up our coastline quite a bit...something I think people only now are coming to regret.) Despite the obvious fact that it isn't anywhere near or what it is supposed to be, it is neat footage of the ferry...and I agree that the blue and green looks neat...I do wish sometimes WSF would add something to the green though. (Not those horrible orange and blue stripes they had in the 80's though...those looked awful.) At least they did use a real WSF ferry in The Ring--and some quite excellent footage of the Quinault too, even though there are no gates on the car deck like they showed and the horn blasting at the end of the scene when the horse goes over is not the Q-boats horn. Er...I can get screen captures of the sequence if anyone is interested? Let me know. Oh, and as for the seagulls, I got it once when traveling to Bremerton...before they had the new dock finished, they had everyone unload from the car deck. Commuters would line up on the car deck long before we got to the dock so you could run to your bus and get a seat. Above ont he pickle forks were the tourists...feeding the seagulls popcorn. It was only a matter of time before someone got it, what with an entire flock of birds right above our heads munching on popcorn being thrown for them...fortunately I only got a bare smattering of it...it is quite amazing how much poop a seagull can produce!

Was that a BC Ferry in the movie War Games? It looked like the Cy Peck or George S Pearson. Can anyone confirm this, LOL?

Unplugged, unaltered, and unforgettable. Here's a short photo series from Oct 2004: Surrey passes Gambier- And approaches Langdale - Surrey was taking us home, but earlier we rode Stormaway IV to Keats Island. Pardon my unashamed love affair with Howe Sound, and our ferries. Folks, it gets no better than this - anywhere in the world. Early ride out of HB on Surrey: Little Stormaway IV passed Plumper Cove on Keats: ... called at Eastbourne, and hauled us back to Keats Landing. We disembarked, hiked out to Admirals' Bluff and admired this perfect view. Only 6 miles from downtown Vancouver ... there is nothing but islands in this view. Big Bowen dominates the background; little Mickey, Ragged, Popham and others fill the scene.

What BC Ferry welcomes pooches on the passenger decks? Only Stormaway III. OK, there's only one deck, but dogs are welcome, travel free and are happy passengers on BCF's smallest boat. Our grinning Bo: *sigh* Stormaway III is a reminder of earlier days, when Cates, Harbour Ferries and others made calls at small communities on the south coast. Happily, the small-boat tradition isn't gone. Mercury runs a successful water taxi service from HB, with scheduled calls to Howe Sound villages. Tymac, oldest and best of the working boat fleet is still headquartered at the foot of Main Street, Vancouver. Tymac's sturdy boats carry workers everywhere from Vancouver to Alaska. I can't sign off without a couple of dog pics. Gambier Island's little store is a surprise: curried tuna sandwiches from their tiny kitchen - or greasy cheeseburgers if you must. The only way in or out is Stormaway III. Our Bo tried hard to be adopted by Gambier Islanders. He sat by the door, grinning. Did he dread the hop to Langdale, or the longer Surrey run to HB? We'll never know. Maybe he liked the Gambier philosophy:

Wolfishness is fine compliment - for a dog. No knock on other small breeds, but our Schipperkes are often greeted with "What kinda dog is that?" "Wow, cool dogs!" and "They look like BIG dogs!" They do, no thanks to us. Schipperkes are small spitzes, inheritors of the wolfish qualities of Arctic dogs. Schips have kept the spitz double coat, the long, fully-toothed muzzle, big brain box and erect ears of their wolf ancestors. Little kids especially love petting Bo and Virginia. They dig into their shiny coats and find the woolly fleece below. The mutts wiggle in delight. 20-lb Schipperkes, like their larger cousins, are calm, observant animals. They are our best friends and excellent travelling companions. Schipperkes are tireless swimmers, so our car is lined with towels. Good ol' Bo, road-trip dog:

Aww, I can't resist telling one little story.
In October 2002, we were coming home from a stay in Saskatchewan's beautiful Cypress Hills. Rolling west on Hiway 3, we encountered an early blizzard near Taber, Alberta.
Virginia was curled up in the back of the Volvo station wagon, snoozing the morning away. Her younger cousin Bo had been hangin' his head out of the window behind me before Medicine Hat, then he fell asleep. I buttoned up the windows and turned up the heat as we drove into the storm.
Bo woke up when the snow was blinding me. "Tap-tap-tap" on the window - his signal to open up.
Jeannie told Bo to *%#%%! forget it, but he persisted; banging on his backseat window.
"OK, buddy" I thought ... "10 seconds of this snowstorm will be enough."
I buzzed down the window, and watched Bo in the mirror.
Sorry, there's no photo, 'cause it was wonderful. The black dog's face was plastered with wet snow in a minute. The wind flipped his ears, so all I saw was a white mask, with black ears above ... and a big pink tongue. Bo was in heaven.
We endured this most of the way to Lethbridge. We turned up the car heat, and let Bo freeze his nose.

Well, the seagulls.. never got hit myself but years ago my sister and me were on a ferry to Stockholm, it was almost arrived and we decided to go on deck like many other passengers. One deck above us have been some nice Swedish guys and we looked up, smiled, waved and - all the good came to an end when a segull sh*it my sister right on her head ! What we did ? Get out of the way as quick as we could, in the cabin (for my sister to clean her hair) and for the other reason - we did not intend to ruin our reputation nor did we intend to be the laugh on the whole deck.. staying in cabin and leaving it only at arrival. Afterwards, we did agree on that we won´t tell it anyone at home as it is simply so embarrassing !
