Sensationalism has taken over :S How so? I suggest you watch the episode on abc.com, within the first ten minutes you will get the comment. Pretty tepid stuff. I found the special effects to be unrealistic and why the heck would they have pulled the burning end of the the ferry into the dock when there was an untouched wheelhouse at the stern? I'll let Barnacle tell you what all was wrong with it. ;D

Okay, here we go:
(1) The incident was a collision between a container ship and the Wenatchee in "dense fog." Moments before this pronouncement, the Wenatchee is shown sailing into Seattle on a beautifully clear day.
(2) As EvergreenFleet pointed out, the damaged/burning end wouldn't be put into the dock, regardless of whether it was the only working end or not. You would not only run the risk of catching the dock on fire, but all of the people needing medical attention would be trapped behind the fire.
(3) No structural damage was edited into the footage, and the CGI-smoke stains were inconsistent. The outboard end periodically shows soot if you're watching closely.
(4) There are not floats or pontoons of any sort that close to Colman Dock. (It may have been the fireboat pier next door.)
(5) Ditto the yellow tie-up cleats.
(6) Getting knocked into the water by a convulsing patient is highly unlikely at Colman Dock; there are railings all around the facility that are required, I believe, to be about 39 inches high.
(7) Aboard the ferry: the flashing red lights on the structural framing are a Hollywood addition. If they were really there, they'd constantly be getting damaged by cars--or damaging cars.
(8) Aboard the ferry: I didn't see any smoke damage inside the boat; did anyone else?
(9) Aboard the ferry: stacking cars atop one another requires vertical force, which is unlikely in a collision. More likely they would have been shoved around but not up. In an extreme case it would've been rolled by the collision, but if that were the case then it should've been upside-down.
I'm not taking exception to landing helicopters on Colman Dock; it's big enough for that. And I'm grateful they didn't do the hackneyed 'terrorist incident.' But, factually speaking as far as WSF's concerned, this episode of Grey's Anatomy is DOA. ;D

I agree on the not docking the ferry with the smokey end first. One would sail with the fire at the end, not the front as the smoke and fire would get blown into ferry instead away from. If they didn't, then they had complete control to turn the ferry around and probably would not have damaged the dock, sending a dock piling onto of the person crushed on the floating platform below?
I never noticed smoke on th car deck either, gotta have a clear picture of those actors.
Watching in HD made the CGI more obvious.
The car deck scene is all wrong, agreed. The cars would smash together end to end before uplifting. Anyone notice any grill damage to the car on top of the guy?
The fire seemed to big.
Where's the other ship?

I watched in HD too and it was completely wrong. "Hit a dense fog bank" back at around 5 minutes or so, there was absolutely no fog, so it is very hard to swallow that one. The other ship must have gone on since they said it "clipped" the ferry.

I saw this episode Friday night and was suprised at how poor the "special-effects" were. I don't think I will tune in to the 2nd episode.
That episode of the medical drama "Emergency" that was made back in the 70's, although campy, was a lot more entertaining than this Grey's Anatomy project.
Does anybody know if that old Emergency episode is out on DVD? They have the 1st and 2nd seasons out but I think that the later shows have yet to come out. It shows a fire aboard the Klickitat out in Elliott Bay, a little more believeable.

Meh, I don't know about 'believable.' WSF was very reluctant to allow any TV-type stuff go on after that episode, as WSF came off very poorly--looked downright incompetent. So badly so, in fact, that a couple of yahoos from Los Angeles who had never seen a fire on a ferry before knew what to do about it more readily than WSF! Think about it... I mean, the premise was that a fuel truck delivered gasoline instead of diesel to the Klickitat. Also, from the footage, I think they moved docks several times before getting underway, and the locations were far enough apart that the contaminated fuel would've gotten to the engines long before anyone was on board. And if the deck was hot enough to pop tires, why wasn't it melting the shoes of those who were pushing cars overboard? Oh, excuse me, I thought this was the 'party-poopers' lounge... ;D

Wow Barnacle, you know your TV history. I have not seen that old Emergency episode since the 70's and don't remember too much about it.
My comments were about the filming of the show being more "realistic" in regards to the special-effects having to be filmed rather than a computer doing the work.
Even if WSF got a blackeye from that Emergency show, I still think this Grey's show is and was STILLBORN!!!

That episode (titled "Most Deadly Passage") was from season 7 (the last season), which hasn't come out on DVD yet (the 3'rd season is scheduled to be released in a few days).

Is that the same "Emergency" TV show that had Squad-51, Engine-51, Rampart Hospital, John Gage, Roy DeSoto, etc ?

There was another episode (which took place in San Francisco) that season where an explosion occured on a ferry that was being scrapped (storyline wise). Hard to tell which one it was (there was not much left above the main deck), but it may have been the San Leandro.

If not much was left above the main deck I'd bet it was the San Leandro which had most of its house burned up by that time. WSF vessels come off best when merely used for scenery or as a background prop...think the Kulshan in An Officer and A Gentleman for example. Although I do still find that sequence from The Ring pretty cool, mainly because it was on the Quinault, my favorite of the Steel Electrics, but even there they got a whole lot wrong with the CGI even if it looks more authentic than what appeared on Grey's. I guess the most obvious flaw was...where'd the container ship allegedly hit the ferry? there was no structural damage that I could see, other than smoke stains and a charcoal colored picklefork. The answer of course? There was no budget for that kind of CGI, so it must have been on the other side of the ferry.

Nope, the other side of the boat was fine, as I have said many times. IT SUPPOSEDLY "CLIPPED"

Nope, the other side of the boat was fine, as I have said many times. IT SUPPOSEDLY "CLIPPED" "Clipped" still means vessel-to-vessel contact. The Sealth and the Kitsap once banged into each other in Rich Passage once in heavy fog in...1992 I think it was and you could see where they'd hit. The CGI on the Wenatchee didn't show any point of impact that I could see-- certainly not one that was supposed to have cause as much fire and damage as represented in the show, with cars piled up on one another.

Not that I'm aware of, just left-brained. Read up on it. It sounds like you fit the definition. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asperger_syndromeNote where it says: people with AS often manifest extremely sophisticated reasoning, an almost obsessive focus, and a remarkably good memory for trivial facts (occasionally even eidetic memory).

Nice.
Well, I did just hear a report that a large portion of the Silicon Valley gang might be diagnosed with Aspergers if they were tested by today's professionals...but, then again, in the same report, the comment was made that many women would diagnose the men in their lives with Aspergers. Football anyone? ;D

I think that to say that anyone with exceptional memory for trivial things has Asperger's, is the same as saying that anyone with exceptional musical ability has William's Syndrome.
I think that Asperger's negative effects would be apparant....and so I find it unlikely that it's synonymous with exceptional-memory. Assuming that Barnacle has regular social ability, and can function in this hectic, crazy world....then I think it's safe to say that your diagnosis is off-base.
Besides, Barnacle is left-brained....as are most analytical people. It doesn't mean that he has Asperger's.....it just means that he doesn't love or feel love (just kidding, about the generalization of "thinkers").
A common trait: Yes.
Necessarily Asperger's: No.
