The Late W.A.C. Bennett, had the vision, amoung many for which we should look back on with great appreciation and good fortune, to begin a ferry service and 50 years later, through thick and thin, good times and not no good, what now comprises BC Ferries is overall an outstanding fleet and one of which we should be proud. Ships of old should be relished for what they were, newer, bigger, faster...whatever, will also come and go and hopefully provide a high level of customer service for the travelling public and we can chat about what has happened in another 25 years or so?? Congratulations to 50 Great Years of Coastal Marine Service, B.C. Ferries!

I did get to Swartz Bay on the big day. I saw David Hahn and a couple of people from Public Relations (Deb Marshall and a new fellow.) Charles Gallagher, GM 1974-81, was there and I said Hi to him, but I didn't know who he was until I saw his name on the TV. When George Baldwin (engineering superintendent 1962-81, then GM 1981-87) arrived, I recognized Mr. Baldwin immediately and said hello to him, too. I wasn't sure if he was still around, and it was great to finally see him in person. Pretty much everyone was in suit-and-tie: Mr. Baldwin and Mr. Gallagher wore a navy blue tie which was decorated with multiple dogwood flags. Bob Lingwood, former CEO of both BC Transit and BC Ferries, was also there. Some other retired top brass were also present, but no sign of Captain Salty, the mascot. They all went to the main car deck on SoBC to do the cake-cutting thing and it was over pretty quickly. I was able to get a couple of chocolates, even though I ended up not taking a trip today. Mr. H went to the barbecue for the staff and that was about it.
As for community celebrations, what about something like a small booth at the Saanich Fair on Labour Day Weekend - models, books, stuff like that. This would not be a company display, just a tribute by some of the fans. I don't know how much a booth at this fair would cost, but it would be interesting to see who would come by...just a thought from a newcomer.

BC Ferries seems to be running some anniversary themed ads. In the latest Beautiful British Columbia is a copy of the ad. It is full bleed picture with scant copy. Take a look at your local mag store if you haven't seen it yet.

it seems ironic that I will have to treck up river to see the resting Queen of Sidney graveyard if I want to go back to the beginning and the only vessel that is still bringing you home after 50 years is Black Balls mv Coho! mr.dot.

Wow, Hullnumbers, that IS amazing! We all know where to order the cakes for future Queen of Richmond trips now! I like how your aunt used fondant icing for the superstructure. We learn how to use fondant in my school's cooking program, which I'm currently taking as an elective.

in responce to wettcoast, yes we very much are returning to the days of the old class system, however the class of today's coastal service and that of the old canadian pacific coast service of years ago, are light years apart! for that mater if you were to go back to the wac Bennett early years of the dogwood dining room white table restaurant service, it would be like comparing a bad day at macdonalds arches to the princess mary! mrdot.

Thank you, I gave her some pictures to work on it. The idea came to me when my family celebrated my Grad 2009. Which was a locker. So I asked her if she could make a ferry cake for fun. My parents over heard and things started to turn out nicely. The only prob was the date to celebrate. Everyone was busy in June so we had it happen during the summer when my family (My moms side) came.
It was more of a Family get together. It was also a celebration for a new cousin of mine who was born over the summer. So it was a three way celebration.
Just a note some of that cake was built by layers and cardboard for structure. She also added the little details.

Just ask a native person what it was like to travel on a CP coast-service ship. Also, my Mom has a story of taking the Princess Patricia to Victoria in the late 1950's when she was traveling with a friend who happened to be of Japanese heritage. Guess who wasn't allowed inside the dining-room on a CP ship in the 1950's ? So in some respects, the "no shirt, no shoes, no service" era of today is much better than the race-based exclusions of 50 years ago.

mr. horn, yes your point is well taken, that era had much unfairness and the Japanese internment, Rosa Parks being sent to the back of the bus!, and US. black solders not being able to use the white facilities, but Nazi prisoners allowed, so many ills of those years, but still the dogwood white dining era shines in my mind. How can we rite the sins of the past? I don't know if we can, but only not repeat them. mrdot.

Thanks for bringing this photo-page back to the forefront. I've been looking at it this morning, and here are some comments: Page 14: - if that's really 1963, would the Sidney or Tsawwassen still be missing the added-on cafeteria at the stern? Page 15: - I like the terminal service vehicle with the fake funnel & mast on top !

Re Mr. F. Horn's query on the Swartz Bay photo which is identified as having been taken in 1963...
Mr. Horn is correct. It had to have been earlier. My guess is 1960 or 1961. The pavement looks new. Also, by 1963, the Sidney class vessels had been moved north to Route 2.
Now, to that remarkable photo of Tsawwassen Terminal from 1985 showing all 5 berths occupied...
Three of the four V class vessels are in berths 2,3 & 4. The Vancouver & Victoria, as well as the Esquimalt or Saanich. In berth 5, which was 8 years away from being converted for Spirit class service, we can see one of the B class, probably the QNWM or Q Burnaby. Lastly, in the distance in berth 1, we can see one of the originals, probably the Sidney, which had not yet been graced with Expo livery.
It seems probable to me that this photo was staged, rather like the 3 northern ship line-up photo taken in Prince Rupert in April 2009.
Did our ferries not look superb back then?

My take is: Queen of Sidney in Berth 1, Queen of Victoria in Berth 2, Queen of Saanich in Berth 3, Queen of Vancouver in Berth 4 and the black mast gives her away Queen of Nanaimo in Berth 5.

:)what is remarkable about that 1985 Tsawwassen shoot is that the management of the day had the wherewithall to plan shuch a pic. That being said, yes the prehistoric fleet did look superb. The fact that the very exposed terminal site was even chosen back then was quite remarkable given that many in private marine circles thought it was folly. And yet many years later multi- levels of port development have transpired. The adjoining Delta port, further establishes the wisdom or lack, of the Roberts Bank site.mrdot.
