FYI, the last day for the Bistro on the Bay is January 15th. This is in order to begin work on the existing lower foot passenger building for total conversion to a waiting room. This will mark an end to BCFC/S provided food service at Departure Bay.
New vendors will be taking over food service once the construction at Departure Bay is complete...

So seeming the bistro is closing down on the 15th, does that mean the current seating in there will be closed off as well? I'd sure hope there will be some sort of space setup to compensate for this, if the entire building is closed off.
I can remember one of the last times this building was closed down, for Pacificatization back in the late 90s. The billboards advertising what the bistro will look like were pretty exciting to see. But when it opened up again, it didn't seem so great or much different than when it was the "Coffee Shop".

I'd sure hope there will be some sort of space setup to compensate for this, if the entire building is closed off. I do not think they are closing the whole lower foot passenger area. I would assume they will leave the current seating area open for public use, and just close only the space where the bistro is located to allow modifications for that section of the building.

Question for anyone familiar with what's going on at Departure Bay:
BC Ferries says the new 'Nanaimo Quay Market' will have a range of outlets similar to Tsawwassen. Surely it won't be as big, though: Tsawwassen has a lot more traffic, and I can't see Departure Bay attracting the same number of tenants. How big does it look like it's going to be?

I am curious to know, is all work on the docks at both Departure bay and Horseshoe bay terminals finished for the Coastal ships ?

The Marine structure work has been completed at Departure Bay and Horseshoe Bay since Berth 2 has been upgraded and the skywalks have been refurbished. Horseshoe Bay's Berth 1 is already serving the Coastal Renaissance.
Departure Bay has started Stages 2 and 3 where they have completed realignment of the Breechin Road intersection and work has begun to expand the long term parking lot and work on the new toll booths has begun. The new passenger facilities are also under construction.

Only thing I can tell is that is definitely Departure Bay due to the turnaround dolphin and probably sometime in the 70s?

The newest car I see is a 67 Ford, and I see a couple of 66 Chevs. Plus there is an unstretched B-Class in berth. My guess would be 1967.

Last contribution for tonight, this time from the DOT collection... Your job now is tell us where & approximately when? Mid 60's Departure bay The coach on the left side of the picture is an old Vancouver Island Coach Lines GMC 4104, built between 1958 and 1961....the other coach in the picture (up near the middle, waiting to board) looks like either a MC-2 or MC-4, which were built between 1961 and 1964. You can tell as the MC-2 and MC-4 had 2 small curved windows at the back.

I think Herg has it right. We moved to BC in '66 from Edmonton and started plying the ferries every other month or so to see relatives in Duncan and Cowichan Bay. It look exact like some of the slides we have. Those buses PCL is talking about were in service for quite a time after that even. However since no newer cars are in the pics then it could be '68 at the latest. Are you sure that the ferry is stretched though? Once the restaurants on the top deck were installed, wasn't the back of the ferry closed off and then a crew only area?

From the picture provided, this Burnaby class ship has not been stretched, if I am understanding you correctly. Yes, they were restricted to crew only access, post stretching. In this photo, you can clearly see the windows across the stern (more of a giveaway is the lower funnel). These were on all B and V class originally, then "Filled in" and replaced by either a lounge or on the V class, the "Fancy restaurant". Had many good meals up there

With regards to the Departure Bay photo above...
It does appear to be from the latter part of the 1960's. The B class in the terminal is obviously unstretched, and is looking new. On the left of the photo is what appears to be a waiting room / coffee shop now long gone. On the right is a VW bug with what appears to be skis on it. The picture looks to be a fall photo, however, due to foliage on trees in the distance.
The car in the front with the black and gold plates was probably from California. I recall them having plates of that colour way back then. Alberta once had yellow on black plates.
Departure Bay had just the two berths at that time.
In the right background there is a truck with camper, the beginning of the RV revolution that has taken North America over the last forty odd years. In those days there were campers such as this one, and travel trailers. Motor homes and fifth wheels had not yet arrived on the scene.
At the time of this photo ferry fares may still have been $5 for cars, $2 for passengers 12 years old and over, and just $1 if under 12. Cost Saver fares for sure...

Wow, Departure Bay sure has changed. I don't think I've seen a photo of the way it used to be. And that's a very beautiful photo of the Pender Queen. Thanks for sharing the photos.. this is one of my favorite threads on the whole forum!

Looking at the webcams, I see that the lanes inside the terminal have been changed and are on a diagonal now. It's hard to get a really good idea of the entire layout of the terminal just from the two webcams, so if anybody happens to be in the Departure Bay terminal in the near future, I'd really like to see some higher quality, more detailed pictures of current and completed construction there.
Thanks in advance!

Looks like the new holding area is now open, should help with summer backups.

Looking at the webcams, I see that the lanes inside the terminal have been changed and are on a diagonal now. Methinks that the diagonal lane layout is to more easily separate lower deck traffic from upper deck traffic.

Thanks for the pics Scott. I know I will likely be buying a Starbucks before boarding to take up on deck with me to watch departure. Saves standing in line at the coffee bar on the ferry.

Starbucks, eh? But won't that compete a bit with the Sitka Coffee Place on board the CR?

I wonder what happens at Tsawwassen terminal. Second of all, is it really competition? I see it more as when you want to have your coffee, on the boat or on land. Might as well provide the convenience. Competition I think is going a wee bit overboard.

I think that coffee (good coffee) available on-shore at the terminal is a good idea. I don't see it as competition that will affect the Sitka Coffee Place.
For those passengers that are waiting 30 minutes plus (or an hour or more) at the terminal, more food/drink choices at the terminal are a good thing.
