Berth 3 is still non-existant: This photo is from no earlier then 1976 when the C-class first came on line. Berth 3, I gather, was built in the early 1980's. Note also the absence of overhead passenger walkways. Prior to the arrival of the C-class, berth 1 & 2 were both in regular use for berthing of the route 2 vessels as they came & went. It has been many years since berth 1 was used for anything other than vessel storage (I think).

The early morning scene at Departure Bay terminal, in September 2014 I like the look and sound of this particular spot, with the waterfall on the wall.

Departure Bay terminal is a constant anchor in this timelapse video of dusk and moonrise seen from Sugarloaf Mountain in Nanaimo.
- July 1, 2015.
Ferries include: - Coastal Inspiration - Queen of Alberni - Queen of Oak Bay - Coastal Renaissance - Queen of Cowichan (idle in berth 1) - small, quick glimpses of Quinsam
...but the moon is the real star in this video.

JWJ Sorry for the 1 year delay to answer this. You can take the trail on the West side of the terminal and walk along the beach. If you walk far enough, about 20 minutes or so you can also see rt 30 ships. By Far the best vantage point to see a glimpse of all three routes is from on top of Sugar loaf Mountain, which you can walk to from DB,.

Newcastle Channel (between Newcastle Island and Nanaimo)
Is it possible that if the "Gap" (the regular way the ships exit and enter Departure Bay) is closed for some reason such as a vessle sinking, that the ferries can leave the terminal via Newcastle Channel even if it is escorted by tug or under tow?

The Vancouver Sun's stock photo is of presumably the Oak Bay, and two Fast Cats! There's a throwback.

I would really like to know how this all went down. The RCMP knew the guy was on the ferry. Some reports say that the ferry staff yelled at the motorcycle referred to in the CBC article to stop, presumably so he would not get caught up in the situation - was this the terminal staff or the Cowichan staff? Did the staff on the Cowichan know that there was potentially a violent guy on the ferry? Was it just coincidence that the guy was near the front of the ferry? Did they purposely let him off as soon as they could?
The Sun article says "Ron MacDonald, chief civilian director, said it was his understanding that B.C. Ferries staff had arranged things in such a way that the suspect vehicle was one of the last ones to leave the ferry." which contradicts the statement by the former mayor of Saanich. If the guy was almost last, were they risking him figuring out that something was up?
It sounds like no more details will be released, so I'll just have to wonder.

Looks like we're going to have an interesting situation at Departure Bay tonight. The Queen of Coquitlam is currently docked here. The Queen of Cowichan was due in at 9:15 pm but instead is coming in at 10:05 pm. The Queen of Oak Bay is also late, coming in at 10:13 pm instead of 9:45 pm. She'll head back to Horseshoe Bay tonight. Then the Coastal Renaissance is due in at 11:55 pm and will head out to Swartz Bay for an early morning start. There's going to be some interesting juggling of ferries!
Edit: Pretty cool how they're doing it! The Cowichan completed her trip over quickly (1h 35 mins) and unloaded in about 20 minutes. The Oak Bay slowed right down and delayed her arrival at Departure Bay. Now, the Cowichan has pulled out of her berth and is moving over to berth 1 (the maintenance berth). Then the Oak Bay can come and go, and so can the Coastal Renaissance.
Additional edit: Looks like the Oak Bay came over empty (and slowly - the trip was just over 2 hours). I guess they put everyone on the Cowichan instead. Now the Oak Bay can just come in to her berth and start loading up for the return trip to Horseshoe Bay.

Today at Departure Bay, there is an orange dinghy towing around a thing that looks precisely like a big neon orange hexagonal floating bouncy castle. There was even a guy in it who I like to think was bouncing around while they towed the thing. My husband points out that it's likely a life raft. I'm sure he's right, but I like my explanation better.
Not sure what they're doing with this raft. The dinghy has towed it around the end of the berth 1 pier twice now.

My daughter went back to the mainland from Departure Bay as a foot passenger yesterday, and she mentioned to me that during boarding, there was a receptacle for people to put their boarding passes in, but no one who really seemed to be checking that everyone was doing that. Is this normal for Departure Bay? I know that at Tsawwassen, someone takes your pass by hand.

Is this normal for Departure Bay? I know that at Tsawwassen, someone takes your pass by hand. Theres only one place to go from Departure Bay, so theres no need to check the ticket for destination. Its faster and easier to have them place it in a bin. Plus, even when its busy it only takes one person to watch people (make sure they put a ticket in the bin) vs. usually takes two people to properly collect tickets. I believe Duke Point (again only one destination) operates the same way. Edit. Usually when I go the person operating the walkway is the guy monitoring for tickets, so thats one guy doing walkway and tickets vs. one guy for the walkway and two ticket collectors at SWB, TSA and HSB. I’m sure it would be easy to cheat this system, but most people are honest and the loss of a few cheaters is likely outweighed massivley but having two less terminal attendants.

Departure Bay will close for 60 days after tonight. When is the last time Departure Bay had no ferry service for more than a day or two?

Thought it Said after Saturday?? The shutdown started this morning. I don't know much about the strike of 2003. It looks like things were only shut down for a few days?
