Did you have to get off the boat at Lopez or were you able to stay onboard??? I would of loved to have been able to take a trip on the Chetzy in the San Juans. I want to do a trip down thee one day to get on the Evergreen State and the Yakima at some point. One thing I like about the interisland boat is it's FREE for foot passengers you could ride the ferry all day. I really want to do more WST trips. BC Ferries is getting boring now, lol! It all depends on the operation. On the loop I did, the CHETZY went from Friday Harbor to Orcas to Shaw to Lopez to Friday Harbor. So, I got to stay aboard her for the entire loop. If she did the Friday Harbor to Orcas to Shaw to Lopez, and did the Lopez to Shaw to Orcas to Friday Harbor version, I guess I would have gotten off at Lopez and reboarded her again there as it would be considered the end of the line. We were all asked to get off at Friday Harbor upon completion of the above loop. Hopefully there would be another time when a KDT would serve the San Juans again during the off season. The SALISH will be on stand by after the KENNY goes on the run between Port Townsend and Keystone Harbor at Coupeville in January (or earlier). Keep watch for any bulletins of any KDT sightings in the San Juans in the future years to come. It would be fun if WSF could do a pre and post two-vessel-season cruise with the SALISH on a day trip from Port Townsend to Friday Harbor via the San Juans. For three hours, let the folks decide whether to do shopping and dining in Friday Harbor or reboard for a loop around the islands via Wasp Passage before returning to Port Townsend. I would definitely do this if such a trip is offered. These KDT ferries are geared for long trips. I just can't see the CHETZY doing short trips between Point Defiance and Tahlequah. It would be nice to see her do a long trip from Point Defiance to Tahlequh via a complete loop around Vashon/Maury Island once a week or month, just to give these riders a chance in riding her on a longer trip.

Unless you are a commuter counting on the 15 minute crossing. I, for one, will miss seeing Rhododendron crossing back and forth, a view I get every day from the house I now live in. Yes, Chetzemoka will probably do fine there but it just doesn't have the same character. I hope someone does something with Rhody after she is retired and doesn't just let her slip away into rot and oblivion as we have seen with so many of our vintage ferries. Alas, economic times being what they are, I am not hopeful for Rhody's future in retirement.

If you want a long trip on a KdT, ask for the Chetzemoka. The seats are nicer.

^--- Will concur. The seats on the Salish are rock hard.

They should get her SOLAS and put her on the Sidney run that is probably all they need on that run!

They should get her SOLAS and put her on the Sidney run that is probably all they need on that run! I know this has been said repeatedly, but I'm going to say it again: the Sidney voyage is only 1 of 5 round-trips that vessel makes during the fall and spring schedules. The other 4 trips are domestic, plus you have to consider the domestic traffic the international sailing picks up in Friday Harbor on its return leg to Anacortes. So, while Sidney traffic may be dropping off because we are heading into the low season, we still need the larger vessel to handle the domestic traffic. Really, I think the state should consider operating the Sidney route for only 6 months out of the year, say mid April thru mid October, then go with a modified winter schedule from mid October thru early January - I say modified because I envision it looking something like the current weekday winter schedule, only with the inter-island ferry operating daily and not taking Saturdays and Sundays off.

I guess that makes sense. But why does the interisland boat only run Monday to Friday during that noted schedule??

I guess that makes sense. But why does the interisland boat only run Monday to Friday during that noted schedule?? It's a cost savings thing, and with traffic in the islands being lowest in the winter months, the state seemed to think this was a good place to reduce service.

One of these days I oughtta make my way up there to Dakota Creek when a Super's up in the sling.
What's the thing with all this bulwark trimming on these?

One of these days I oughtta make my way up there to Dakota Creek when a Super's up in the sling. In the actual sling, or the drydock? I wasn't sure if you were referring to the Synchrolift or not. The Supers won't fit into the synchrolift. In the drydock, well... if you can envision a foot-long hot dog in a regular bun, you've got a fair idea what it looks like.

Sling, drydock... Thought they all meant the same. Learn something new every day!
Either way it'd be nice to get some decent pix of the hull of a Super-Class ferry. Need to know where the bilge keel is (if any) on them and other details.
Anywho...

Anyone know anything about a damaged prop on Chet. I heard that on one wheel two blades are bent.

Actually cracks are the issue, not bent blades. I have heard there might be quality control issues when they were cast.

Thanks for the info, I suppose that they have, or will, dismount the wheel and send it to a prop. shop?

I'll try to pop over to DCI for a look if I get the chance.

Thats my understanding, i don't know how much truth there is to what i heard but they are supposedly composed of a uncommon alloy which will require them to be trucked out of state for repair. Sometimes thats what you get for having the latest/greatest.....

Heh. I just heard that rumor take another trip around the block today. I still haven't gotten over to DCI.

I hope this is not going to be a common theme with the Chetz. While the facts are not out yet, I would not be surprised if they used some hard to get materials on that boat. Using readily available parts would make too much sense for the State. I know the Klahowya had her rudder fall off once, but has any boat had a propeller blade break off in transit that we know of?

Using readily available parts would make too much sense for the State. I know the Klahowya had her rudder fall off once, but has any boat had a propeller blade break off in transit that we know of? Several years back the Yakima threw a blade. It was, I believe, the first time a Super had been put in the drydock at Dakota Creek. It caused and almighty boat shuffle too. Edit: I found an article on it archived at KOMO. The State said then it was the first time such a thing had happened in 25 years. Damaged Ferry Out Until Next WeekBy By KOMO Staff & News Services Published: Jul 21, 2003 at 3:41 PM PDT Last Updated: Aug 31, 2006 at 1:07
Damaged Ferry Out Until Next Week SEATTLE - State ferry officials now say the ferry Yakima will be out of service until early next week because of a damaged propeller.
State ferry officials have been scrambling to find drydock space for the Yakima, which operates from Anacortes to the San Juan Islands.
Replacing the propeller will take about three days, once the 160-car ferry can get into the Dakota Creek drydock in Anacortes.
State ferry spokeswoman Susan Harris says the 100-car ferry Tillikum was taken off the Fauntleroy-Southworth-Vashon run on Puget Sound and sent to replace the Yakima.
In addition, the Kaleetan will make an extra 1:25 p.m. sailing from Anacortes to Orcas Island, and returning by way of Shaw and Lopez islands. The Elwha will also take vehicles from Anacortes to Friday Harbor on a 2 p.m. sailing.
Long delays were reported Sunday for people returning from the San Juans.
Ferry officials say it's been at least 25 years since a state ferry lost part of a propeller.

Not that I know, but I heard the props were made in Europe, and no spare was made.
Hopefully, the prop isn't made out of unobtainium.

LOL, I have to wonder what it feels like when a vessel throws a prop blade that large.

LOL, I have to wonder what it feels like when a vessel throws a prop blade that large. From what I've heard, the vessel sets up a massive shimmy in a big hurry. A passenger reported seeing the blade from the Yakima skip across the water like a misshapen frisbee.
