The newest WSDOT ferry SANPOIL is now in service. Next to enter service is the big MV TOKITAE here on the Salish Sea side of the Cascades!

I love that photo of the two kids jumping into the water! Anyway, the Sanpoil is sure a nice vessel. It even looks better than the Martha S. Imagine that, a new ferry looking better than the old one.

25-Aug-2013On our way back from Cheney today, we took a nice little detour via Hwy 2, turning right onto Hwy 21 at the little town of Wilbur, and ended up at Keller, all for a ride on Washington State's newest ferry, MV Sanpoil. So, without further adieu, here are my pictures of Sanpoil and the Keller ferry crossing: Hwy 21 heading north goes through a series of switchbacks as it descends down to the Keller Ferry crossing, and it has this nice little viewpoint from which you can see Lake Roosevelt (Columbia River) and the Sanpoil River Arm, for which this little vessel is named. The Keller ferry landing is right in the middle of those trees on the closest edge of the river in this photo. The new ferry dock on the Keller side. It looks to be moveable, although it is anchored to various structures on the shore. I'm sure it is designed to move up and down with the lake as the levels change. And there she is! MV Sanpoil approaching the Keller side A closer view of the ferry The Keller ferry landing - all of 2 cars heading north on our sailing. The southbound sailing, as you can see from the previous pic, had quite a few more cars On board MV Sanpoil. There were 2 cars, 4 motorcycles, and 3 walk-ons on our crossing view of the Lake Roosevelt part of the Columbia River from MV Sanpoil while crossing the river to the north side MV Sanpoil car deck end crew stairs up to the pilot house MV Sanpoil arriving at the north side of The Columbia River

A closer view of the ferry Great photo. How much money will the state save not painting her throughout her life?

A closer view of the ferry Same river, same type of ferry (roughly). Here is the MV Shelter Bay, which works the Columbia River south of Revelstoke BC. - her route is across a widening of the river (Arrow Lake) - my photo (into the sun) from September 10, 2012.

Apparently the Sanpoil has been out of service for the past week due to steering problems. It has just re-entered service today. See here for more information.

WSDOT has just released a documentary about the Martha S on their YouTube account. That was really enjoyable... good on WSDOT for putting that together. Too bad BC Ferries couldn't have commemorated a similarly plucky little vessel, the Mill Bay.
Thanks for posting that, Mr SolDuc.

I was scouring through the Washington State Ferry contracts and I noticed one on the Sanpoil. It said that it was going to for drydocking and the contract was awarded to Dakota Creek Industries. How is that going to work? Are a few employees coming out, or is the vessel going to get driven to the facility in Anacortes?

How is that going to work? Are a few employees coming out, or is the vessel going to get driven to the facility in Anacortes? Maybe it will be drydocked at the same place it was assembled, by the Grand Coulee dam. Or maybe they'll do it closer to the terminals. Certainly no need to transport it to Anacortes.
