The theme for February 2011's flagship is "Cross Company photo". - ie. 2 or more different company ferries in the same photo.
ie. this is what I have in mind: - BC Ferries ship with Seaspan truck/rail ferry - AMHS with the NorEx. - Brandon's pic of the Steilacoom-II passing by the Chetzemoka is ok, and is hopefully a nominee.
Rules for the schemers: - these must be car, truck or rail ferries. No wood-chip barges and no passenger-only ferries (ie. no SeaBus). - Both ferries must be at least 75% shown in the photo (so your photo from the SOVI of the passing Columbia, showing the railing of the SOVI is not ok). - a picture at Deas of sold-off retired ferries (ie. P.J.) beside a current BC Ferry does not qualify. The ships in your picture need to be currently used as ferries at the time when your pictures is taken.
The key criteria is that the ferries in your photo need to be owned by different ferry companies/entities, and operating as car/truck/rail ferries, at the time of your photograph.
I'll say it again: car, truck or rail ferries. A pusher-tug & barge combo for a vehicle ferry (such as Barnston Isl or the Seaspan Challenger) is ok. ....and I'll further clarify the rules as necessary, in order to stay with my intended theme.
Submissions are limited to 3 per member, and the due date is 8:00pm PDT on January 29th 2011.
Rules for this are shown in the rules thread. - take a look at last month's thread to see how the nominations are done, with the display pic and the full-size link. And ask questions if you're not sure.

Too bad we'll never see BCF and WSF in the same shot, as they don't ever get near each other.

Too bad we'll never see BCF and WSF in the same shot, as they don't ever get near each other. It may be possible if one takes an aerial shot including both Swartz Bay Terminal and Sidney Ferry terminal. Maybe Karl, our forum's frequent flyer, might have a photo like that?

Too bad we'll never see BCF and WSF in the same shot, as they don't ever get near each other. That would be really cool. The only way I ever see that happening is if BC Ferries sends some of its minor vessels to Washington shipyards for maintenance or overhaul work (that was being discussed, right?). In that eventuality, you might get lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time if a BC Ferry happened to cross one of the WSF routes. Even then, it would be a long shot (pun intended). Even the photo BryanK submitted with MV Columbia and MV Wenatchee in Fairhaven is quite rare. The only reason those two vessels ever met is because they were performing dockside work on Wenatchee at that location.

One of the smaller B.C.'s crossed our path on the US of Haro Strait a few summers back. I think I posted the photos under "visitor to Haro Strait" or some thread. If I'd been on another boat, it would have been possible to have gotten a B.C. Ferry and WSF in the same shot.

There's a very small window of opportunity to get a BC Ferry and a WS Ferry in the same shot. When the Coastal Celebration is running as the #1 out of Swartz Bay, you can see her with the Elwha on the International run. I tried to capture this moment a few weeks ago, but I wasn't quick enough to get a good enough photo of this. You must take the 11:00am Skeena Queen and keep and eye on the Celebration as she departs via Colbourne Passage around Fircomb Island (The inbound spirit way) Anyways, here's an idea of what it looks like.

PS: I have already put up three entries for the February header 'contest'. I was thinking this could be entered on behalf of Mr. DOT, as it comes from his collection. Alternatively, at the discretion of Mr. FH and the other moderators, I may replace one of my other entries with this photo. JST/WCK - sounds like a good idea to have this as an "on behalf of David" submission. Your 3 previous JST photos are ok to stay. Good work

Well I think it's safe to say which photo I'll be voting for! Hey, you haven't seen mine yet. ;D ....but no, I don't have a QPR-Taku pic. But I do have a DIF-Taku pic.

I'm getting my nominations ready, and I've found 25 photos that are good crops. Now I need to eliminate the poorly lit ones and the fuzzy ones.
Hopefully I'll have my 3 picked soon, and they should be a variety of combos.
...but the dilemma is to go for a unique situation, or a good photo. I can't always get both. ;D

July 29th, 1970, I was with 'B' watch Queen of Prince Rupert when we performed our 'rescue' of some 70 vehicles from the M.V. Taku after the Taku made an unplanned stop at West Kinahan Island. a couple of weeks later, one of the 'B' watch busboys had obtained several copies of a super 8x 10 - black and white aerial photograph of the 'Rupert' nestled our bow to the Taku's stern at West Kinahan Island. Apparently the lad had a relative who was a pilot for one of the news planes that went out to cover the story and the pilot had taken this great shot. I have a copy of it hanging on a wall in my apartment and it will be entered in the February, 'Cross Company Photo' Flagship sweepstakes.

A reminder that Saturday Jan.29th is the submission deadline for the cross-company banner contest.
I'll try to get the voting set-up to start on Saturday night, and run for 48 hours until Monday evening.
I'm also liking the recent trend of using 2 flagship-photos for the month. I'll likely set the poll to pick your favourite 2 items, and then we'll plan on having the top 2 as our winners to display each for 1/2 of the month.
-----------
Hey Kahloke, will your photo of Chetzemoka on sea-trials (with St.II in the same pic, from Fort Flagler) fit the banner cropped-size?

Hey Kahloke, will your photo of Chetzemoka on sea-trials (with St.II in the same pic, from Fort Flagler) fit the banner cropped-size? No, it's not wide enough, and the boats are too far apart in the photo to make the crop work.

It's unfortunate that this contest is limited to car/truck ferries only. I was looking forward to posting some photos I'd taken at work until I read the fine print.
White Coast's shot of the Columbia & Stikine together gets the thumbs up from me. Thanks for sharing, everybody!

I'll have the voting ready to go by around 8:10 pm or so, tonight in local Vancouver Island time. ;D Hmm, does this now mean Vancouver Island sees itself as out of synch/time from Vancouver and the rest of BC? Kinda like Newfoundland, 6pm Pacific time and a half hour later on the Island.
