Very interesting! What other ships are out there that can carry reailcars I wonder? And/or does that spell the end of the E&N? Seaspan Greg, Princess Superior, Seaspan Doris were the other more recent self propelled railcar ferries to serve BC's coast, but all have had their rails removed (Princess Superior I think still has rails, but is only capable of hauling 5 railcars). The E&N is still alive, Seaspan uses tug and barge to transport railcars to it now.

I will post later tonight.

The E&N is limping along with a handful of customers, currently waiting to sign a contract with VIA to get the Dayliner running again, but that's another subject altogether! I have some E&N photos on my flickr page if you're interested: www.flickr.com/photos/7307607@N06/ Yes, sadly the Carrier Princess is having the rails removed leaving it for drop-trailer service only. Looking forward to your photos to see how the process is coming along (can you post the penthouse pics too? ).

I went and saw soem of your photos. Nice! I lived in Duncan for one year - 1969. We moved into a house in a new subdivision on Gibbons Drive. The Cowichan Lake subdivision ran not too far behind us - complete with the distinct sound of those old Baldwins. I did pay a visit back there in the early 90's. The restle that used to be there was gone. Only a couple of stumps and concrete footings were left.

Here is the photo of the Carrier Princess from today. It is hard to tell from the photos but the tracks are gone from the stern. You can kind of see what's left towards the bow, but it looks like she is getting some new deck plating. She probably needs a good painting as well.

Being the opportunity-aware marine photographer that I am, I've noticed on Seaspan Ferries' schedule that the Seaspan Greg leaves Nanaimo at 7:45am, weekdays and Saturday.
Sometime in the coming months, once sunrise is closer to 7:30am, I will head down for a sunrise departure photo shoot of Mr. Greg Yorke. (before it's too late and she's no longer in service..... which might happen in a few years).

Normally the Carrier Princess will do a run to/from Nanaimo early in the morning and then an evening cruise to/from Swartz Bay. I believe the Princess Superior does this as well but in reverse order but with an 11:00am-ish departure from Swartz.

The Greg at Nanaimo, departing at 7:00am sharp, on February 2, 2013. - I'm on the visiting vessel float, beside the Cameron Island condos. The ex Greg Yorke, completing her loading. Close up of her very tall superstructure With the Quinsam, shortly before both ships departed. Quinsam left her berth, just a minute or 2 after Greg departed. ---------------- Video of the departing Seaspan Greg. - poor lighting, but that's the best that I could do with her in Nanaimo subbing for Carrier Princess during these dark-morning months. - I'm not sure why I mutter the word "Greg" in the middle of the video, but I must have been thinking it, because that's what I was on the waterfront to see.

Carrier Princess under the Lions Gate Bridge outbound from Vancouver - circa 1980 [photo © Mr. DOT] by Wett Coast, on Flickr
She is still 'looking good' 30+ years later operating for Seaspan, though I don't think you can catch her passing under the Lions Gate these days.

Seaspan Greg @ Seaspan's Swartz Bay berth - 18 March 2013. I have not seen her at Swartz Bay before, but I am told that she is not uncommon on this run. photo © WCK-JST by Wett Coast, on Flickr

Doris Seaspan as seen from the SeaBus and Canada Place: Just to be clear, the name of the ship is "Seaspan Doris". Same order as her friend "Seaspan Greg". Both were formerly named "_____ Yorke" in their pre-Seaspan days. Doris Yorke and Greg Yorke (the ships) were named after family members in the "FM Yorke and Son Ltd." company in which they were launched.

An assortment of different angle views of Seaspan Ferries' Carrier Princess, seen at and near Nanaimo, BC. - she left at Noon on May 4, 2013. I am across the harbour at Gallows Point on Protection Island. A fine location to see the ships entering & leaving Nanaimo's harbour. Smoking up as she leaves the berth Probably my favourite photo of the day With Nanaimo Port Authority's assembley-wharf in the background - a gantry-crane freighter is loading from a barge of scrap metal. Passing me by, at the light marker She left Nanaimo at Noon, so she was destined to meet the inbound Queen of Alberni near Duke Point.

Carrier Princes and Seaspan Doris (Yorke): Photos are from a 1980s era coffee-table book “Vancouver & British Columbia” which appears to be a gift-book aimed at tourists to Vancouver and BC. Not much is noted in the book regarding publisher info. “Coombie Books” from 1987, with illustrations & text by “Colour Library Books Ltd.” No photo credits mentioned. I purchased this book for $2 at our local Rotary club sale, for the very purpose of posting these photos here, to show a bit from that era. ====================
