I took a trip to Protection Island (just off Nanaimo harbour) today, which allowed me a close vantage point to photograph the Seaspan truck-carrier as she arrived at Nanaimo. I was hoping it would be Doris, but instead it was the Challenger/Spirit tug/barge combo. Here is the view today from Gallows Point: -------------------------- With the Quinsam @ Descanso Bay in background: - with Gallows Point light - after passing Gallows Point: ---------------------- View of the forward end of the Coastal Spirit barge. - I was surprised to see exhaust pipes. I wonder if this is for an engine that powers the reefer units and also powers the barge navigational lights and rudders? (note: the green items are background on the Nanaimo waterfront)

More Seaspan Challenger / Coastal Spirit pictures taken today, from Gallows Point on Protection Island. Here are the various angles to view the S.Challenger tug. --------------------------- You can see how far forward the rubber tip of the tug's bow extends, amidst the barge's deck traffic. - the crane you see in front of the tug superstructure is background at the Nanaimo Assembly Wharf. On the barge stern sides, you can see what I think are rudders on each side of the barge. - also note the half-covered / half-naked funnel on the tug. Turning into the Wellcox berth. Photo-bombed by a deHavilland Otter. Final close-up of tug's stern.

Seaspan photos from October 15, 2010. It was a lovely autumn day for ship watching from the water. Seaspan Doris headed for Tilbury terminal: - but the mountains and clouds are the real stars here. Princess Superior headed up Swanson Channel on her route from Swartz Bay to Tilbury Island.

The Seaspan berth at Nanaimo. From my memory, the berth structures / ramps / towers have not changed much since the CP day of the mid 1970's. Pictures from January 2, 2010 (taken from the rooftop parking area of Port Place mall, shortly before security shooed me away) and a pano-stitch of the yard, with the Spaulding twins trying to hide. ---------------- close-up of the berth tower: I agree, the berth looks the same as far I can remember too. I stood in the mall parking lot look over at the dock. I seem to recall at one time "Ferry to Vancouver" was painted on the front tower.

Seaspan Doris made an appearance at Duke Point last week. She docked at a ramp next to the big container crane. I have pics and will upload them when I get a chance in the next day or so.

from our forum archives from 2006: ----------- ----------- This is from a 1974 CP Rail Ferry Services schedule.
As you can see, she only did two round trips to Swartz Bay. From 1000 to 1545 she did a rounder to Nanaimo. The centrespread from a 1977 CP Rail Ferry Services brochure.

:)thanks to my brother wettcoast, for all the hours he is spending going thru all the multitude of negatives I have loaded him up with, shots taken in the 1970's and thereafter. My new age email skills are lacking and I ask all members for their patience with my postings, which may not be up to code! I had forgotten the many times I shot the then new Carrier Princess, the last of the BC coast Princesses, and she still keeps on ticking, much like the NIP!mrdot.

Can regular passengers and vehicles travel on seaspan??? I have always wondered what the Carrier Princess is like that would be a neat ship to travel on.

Can regular passengers and vehicles travel on seaspan??? I have always wondered what the Carrier Princess is like that would be a neat ship to travel on. They're not licensed to carry passengers. A couple of years ago they told me they only carried drivers of dangerous cargo vehicles- not sure if they still do that.

NOTE: THIS POST IS IS VERY PHOTO-HEAVY. Just to relieve those who don't like photo-heavy posts, this is going to be my last giga-post for awhile, I think. ;D So, here are a few billion pictures of the Carrier Princess during her ongoing refit at Vancouver Dry Dock, taken on my recent trip to North Vancouver (same day as I got the QotI photos). Now, enough with the blah, on with the photos: Taken from the Burrard Dry Dock Pier: Taken from the confines of the Vancouver Dry Dock land: (sorry for the blurriness, it was a dark day ) She's missing her props and her stbd rudder and shaft. Her portside rudder and shaft. Keel-coolers dot the underside of her hull. Her port anchor-chain... ...and anchor: From the vehicle-deck. Notice the rails for train-cars and asphalt deck surface. Replacing rotten metal. Through the tunnel. Her stbd funnel. Starboard Engine. Engine Room control center. Gauges measuring everything you could think of. These show alarms on-board. Replacing more metal. The 'workshop', down in the engine room. Looking forward from the port funnel. Looking toward starboard. A life-ring on her portside. Looking forward on the portside lower outside deck. A staff lounge in the aft of the lower pax deck, outfitted with some old BCFC furniture. A dining area on the port side. The forward lounge, looking towards port. Builder's plaque. Looking towards the stbd quarter in the main lounge. Looking aft on the port side of the main lounge. The little cafeteria. Deck plans: Main pax: Upper pax/bridge: Bridge, looking to port. The wheel. Her ship's bell, located on the portside next to the wheelhouse. Notice the Vancouver skyline in the background. Looking aft on her upper outside deck, portside. Monkey's Island, looking aft. Monkey's Island, looking forward. Her airchime. Looking aft, down at the vehicle deck, from the upper outside deck. Looking up to Monkey's Island from the aft upper outside deck. And one last pic, looking forward with the superstructure in view. Thank you very much to Vancouver Dry Dock for granting me the tour, and the souvenir hard-hat and goggles! She's really a nice ship.

You've got a great future as our intrepid field reporter, after your two recent photo essays. That's probably the best look we've had at the Carrier Princess. Much appreciated.
