The Nanaimo berth for Seaspan Ferries. - this was used by CPR as far back as I can remember (early 1970s) What's up with that little office hiding right at the top of the berth? I've seen it, but never bothered to bring it up...

Maybe it is for someone to have a bird's-eye view of the loading process for rail cars, which presumably might be a complicated thing. A nice photo location.... ;D

Housing for the winch motors and a control "office" for the dock?

The berth on the Vancouver side was very similar to the Nanaimo side and was always painted a very dark black or other very dark colour. When I asked as a little kid, it was said to be that colour so the exhaust from the small yard engines loading rail cars, wouldn't be noticable. Not sure if that was the real reason but makes sense. Similar to ships that paint masts aft of the funnel black.

With Coastal Renaissance and Quinsam With Coastal Renaissance With Quinsam Passing Jack Point PS: I wonder if predatory BC Ferries has considered suing Seaspan to stop using the name " Coastal Spirit" ? (a tongue-in-cheek musing of mine). ;D

Kind of unrelated to Seaspan, but after seeing Flugel's post of the Carrier Princess on August 11 carrying rail cars, I'm guessing that there still are freight trains running on the Island. Is this still the case? I was under the impression that all rail traffic had stopped operating on the E&N.

It may be more 'related' than you realize, as both Seaspan and the Southern Railway of Vancouver Island (as the E&N is now known) are sister companies, both part of the Washington Group. Although Via's passenger service on the SVI is 'down', freight service is still alive, at least on a portion of the SVI system. For more go to the 'Trains' thread starting at post #497.

Seaspan Challenger / Coastal Spirit combo departing Nanaimo for Tilbury Island, in evening on September 26, 2012. - seen from College Heights subdivision, above Nanaimo. Poor focus on this zoom, but it does show a seldom seen from above view of the Coastal Spirit barge's full deck. This scene happens every weekday evening in Nanaimo, with the Seaspan rig and the Quinsam leaving the harbour. Rounding Gallows Point on Protection Island. Queen of Alberni approaching, while Seaspan combo departs. - lovely view of the boats in Nanaimo harbour Straight down the middle of Fairway Channel, with Entrance Island visible.

The Seaspan Doris has been sitting at Seaspan's layup area in North Vancouver for about 6-8 months. Any idea what the story is?
