September's banner theme will be a feature of the artwork done over the years by our friend David Thorne.
"Mr. DOT" has been drawing/painting for who knows how long (he'll tell us some stories, I hope) and has a fine collection of interpretations of BC Ferries, CP steamships and other coastal ships.
Depending on the number of banner-sized items that David's brother "Wett Coast" will have available to us, this month will either have us doing a ballot of items to choose our "top x favourites", or we'll just set them all to a rotating display for September with no ballot. - I think that 6-8 rotating items would be a good variety for the rotating banner display for the month.
So we will start to display the nomination (or final) banners in this thread, once they become available from Wett-Coast.
I think that it's important for us to honour the work of this fine artist.

We will have some nominations posted here, in a few days. And then we'll have some more posted after August 21st or so.
I'm hoping that we can have some good Questions-and-Answers about the various items of David's artwork that will be displayed here.
My first question for David: - what years did you do most of your sketches? ie. between 1965-1980 ?
Do you still do ship sketches?
And which ships did you practice with, when you were learning back in your art-classes days.

:)those dates you mentioned were about the active years of my ship drawing years, I continued in my planning career, but most of my work was architectural renderings, and town planning related, and I haven't keep up with my marine drawings, something is happening in my retirement days, I am fast loosing my fine motor skills and the fine drawing I used to do is fadeing from my callendar, I think I am not up to keeping up my artwork and I have left the photo taking to my brother and others. I am going thru my vast collection of a marine pack-rat and getting wettcoast and some of the younger generation to cataloge and preserve some of this material before it falls thru the cracks.I am enjoying reading some of my stuff for the first time in all the years of working in another field. :)mrdot.

I have now 'put up' 16 submissions for the September 2011 headers that will feature my brother's (Mr. DOT) original artwork. As I will be away (hiking in the Canadian Rockies) over the next couple of weeks, there will not be any more until later this month.
Perhaps, at the discretion of Mr Flugel Horn and the other moderators, this is enough now. It is, I think, a good sampling of my brother's marine artwork.
We could do a 'vote' early to choose six or eight of these for the September rotating display. I would ask that 'voters' do not gravitate just to BC Ferries, or just to coloured drawings. Lets make the month of September not just a tribute to David's art, but also to the maritime heritage of British Columbia.

Thanks Wett Coast. I think we have enough now, so no need to add more.
For the month-end vote, I think we'll ask for some proportional-representation style of voting. - hey it got WAC elected, so it must be a good idea.
But seriously, I think we'll do our best to ensure that the September rotation is a good mix of colour, black/white, early BCF, middle BCF, and the steamships. - a combination of ballot with a few possible mod-choices to round out the rotation.
Question for those who are following this thread: - what is a good number for the amount of items in the September rotation set? How much variety would you like to see? ie 6, 8, 10, 12 ?

I don't think a vote is really needed. All of these illustrations are excellent. Put these in a slide show within the banner. Have them change every few seconds like what you see on a few websites with such feature.

Love the drawings!!! It is too bad you are not making any more of these, but I really think that the Spirit of Vancouver Island is my favorite! Makes me want to pick a pencil back up again and try to make a better effort on some of my early drawings. Great illustrations!!!

Are you happy with how we're currently doing rotating banners, which change every time that you change/refresh your page ? Are you (and I do mean you, FerryNut) happy with the number of different banners that we've been rotating for each of the past few months? (I think we're doing a 6-rotation). Just making sure that you've noticed....

These are lovely. I really admire anyone that can draw like that. Mr DOT really does such a lovely job of capturing the spirit of the boats.

It's better than seeing just the same old image the whole month. Let's continue this and do the changing banners from now on. Makes me want to click "F5" all the time (as long as we be conservative and don't exceed page views each month)! ;D

We are nearing month-end.
I think it would be a good idea to skip a vote, and just set all 16 drawings into the September flagship rotation. - I look forward to enjoying them all, all month long.
Sound ok to you?

Sound ok to you? Sounds wonderful to me! DOT has put in a tremendous lot of effort and skill in producing his artwork of the ships on our coast. Very difficult to pick out the best. All of them are the best. I vote for all of these submissions. It's going to be a fun month of September seeing all of these. I'll try and be conservative on the use of that "F5" button so we don't exceed page views next month! ;D

:)thank you to EGfleet and other kind comments, a big thank you should go out to my brother, wettcoast, as he has done much of the work at presenting this material which dates back to my previous career path of the 1960's to 1980's, which he has formatted to today's email world! Thanks to all those out there that have expressed enjoymemt in this 'classic' dogwood and previous era of our shipping heritage. :)mrdot.

That's OK, Mr. DOT! I sometimes make a few mistakes as my earthly shell and brain are nearing their golden age. We applaud you for your beautiful art work of the ships on our coast.

I am satisfied now that all 16 drawings are ready for presentation, all complete with titles.
This is, of course, a small sampling of David's work. I will scan other drawings as we head into autumn as time allows and place them here on the forum for others to enjoy.
Cheers - JST aka WCK

We will start adding these sixteen D.O.T works to our header momentarily.
For your information, the length of some images is over our usual 240 pixels. This special month has required exemption to this rule.
We ask that you do not intentionally refresh (F5) the forum just to view the various works. If you wish to see all the images, please revert back to this thread. Rest assured that all of the works on this thread will appear in our header.
Thank you to Mr. D.O.T and Mr. J.S.T for providing us with a very special treat for the month of September!

I love this month's flagship, and what a way to pay tribute to DOT. Good choice! I'm really happy with how it worked out. - it was wonderful to see the banners up last night. I've resisted the F5 bug, so far...haha The Northland Prince banner's colour matches well with our forum skin colours (I'm using the regular forum skin option).
