Here's a delightful post from the Hornby facebook page, from Don Peterson, about the Savoies and the Hornby Island V...
I remember the 2 car ferry well from the many trips our family took coming to Hornby in the mid 50's. One of the most vivid memories was a time when some rope got wrapped around the prop in mid-strait. After a short discussion with Albert, Leo stripped to his underwear, put a knife between his teeth and dove overboard. A few minutes later he was back on deck and the ferry was underway again!

This is Hornby Island's first car ferry, the Hornby Island V, built on the island and operated by the Savoie family. Taking into account that cars were smaller in the 1950s and looking at how close the two vehicles are parked, I'm wondering if this vessel was any more than sixteen feet wide. Must have been a very rough ride many stormy days on the longer run from Gravelly Bay to Phipps Point... I imagine it was common for runs to be cancelled. Photo by Sig Peterson, by way of Don Peterson of Hornby.

Neil, your guess at an overall width got me thinking, so I did a quick bit of research...
I think that's a 1953 Chevy on the left. How wide is a 1953 Chevrolet overall? Google says 75 inches. That's actually 2 inches wider than a 2020 Chevrolet Malibu, if google is to be believed. Anyways, I think that's a 1957 Ford next to it and it's 77" wide according to google. If those cars were touching each other they'd measure 12'8" together. They're maybe 6 or 8 inches apart at the bumper? And it looks like there's maybe a foot of space either side between the cars and the bulwarks? so a car deck width of about 16 feet seems close, though I'd bet she's more like 18 feet wide overall by the time you add bulwarks, rubrails etc.
