As a side note, I've always wondered if there is a secure room on the major vessels where someone could be segregated from other passengers if they were deemed a threat. The Queen of the North had a brig. I saw it on a tour that I had of the ship, during a 2004 inside passage sailing. The Queen of Prince Rupert also had a brig and it was used on more than one occasion, strangely during the Winter sailing schedule. An unfortunate crew member enjoyed the 'brig amenities', ordered by the Captain, for a few hours many moons ago.

Is there any particular logic behind as to when the platform decks are used on the Queen of Cumberland? Traveling on the 1435 to Otter Bay on Friday and curious as to whether they will be used or not.

I’m pretty sure there isn’t any other factors.

Queen of Nanaimo is strutting her stuff in this August 2019 commercial. Nice 'find' and posting 'Dane'. IF BCFS ran this commercial in August of 2019, someone at BCFS should have their knuckles rapped! WRONG vessel to use but the content of the commercial is really, really good! Very nice message! Am I too much of a nitt-picker or am I expecting someone in charge of commercials to have the smarts to use: maybe one or both of the 'Spooks'? Maybe show off one or more of the 'Coastals'? But, if whoever is calling the 'ship-shots', is really into one of the last 'sisters', I'm sure the good denizens of the Royal City would love to see their name sake vessel appear in all it's historical splendor! eh? ps. Do I hear a giggle wafting in the breeze from far away....'gone, but they still love me,

Not a question or an answer... but 'general', so I'll put it here. It's kind of a pet peeve, and we don't have a thread for 'general BC Ferries pet peeves'. That's probably a good thing. 'Dear BC Ferries' is nothing but, and we all know the value of looking in there.
Did a day trip yesterday, Surrey to Courtenay and back, for my daughter's birthday. I always thought she was a bit nutty for keeping her Kitsilano dentist and coming to the mainland for just the day for that, or book signings to do with her literary career, or other stuff. But after doing the trip, I kind of get it. You wouldn't want to do it every week, but once in a while, a couple of long drives and a couple of meals onboard isn't really such a trial. Glad I raised someone who doesn't hate ferries, even if she pretends not to notice the the fine details.
Anyway, it seemed to me that the announcement about nearing the terminal was made ridiculously early as we rounded Gabriola, heading toward Duke Point. Way sooner than normal, and I wondered if it was just a miscue, or if they had actually changed procedure on route thirty. We were certainly more than the announced ten minutes from the dock. But as I hung around upstairs watching us pull in to the dock, a teacher shepherding a group of high school kids was going about with a student frantically looking for a lost bag. An announcement was made on the P.A. Hopefully they resolved things. If so, it might have been due to the early call for people to get down to either the car deck, or to the foot passenger disembarkation area.
And maybe other ferry veterans like me have noticed how early the announcements are made at Tsawwassen and other terminals for people to get back to their vehicles, because "the crew is ready to welcome you onboard for your trip to..." The crew isn't actually ready. They haven't even unloaded. But yesterday morning, there was a guy with an armload of Starbucks goodies dashing back to his car in the reserved lane, as everyone in front, behind, and in the adjacent lane had left his vehicle as a tardy outlier in the loading process. Would have served him right if he missed the boat, I thought.
I guess the announcements have to be made with the most inattentive travellers in mind.

Why did the Queen of Alberni have her exterior bridge stairs removed?

I experienced the premature announcement at Tsawwassen, a few minutes ago. The ready-to-board announcement was made even before the Route-30 ferry had begun to unload. The Tsawwassen terminal also does the "return to your vehicles" announcement with a generic first few sentences, before they mention the destination. That likely needlessly alarms customers waiting for one of the other routes.

Apologies if this question has already been asked elsewhere, but can anyone confirm if the Mill Bay ferry takes card payment now? I am considering taking this route before I head back to Quebec and was a bit surprised to see cash, credit and debit payment listed on the BCF schedule.

Yes it does because a crew member has hand held card machine.

If you have a chance to buy some pre paid tickets at thriftys or mill bay shell gas station, do so, the crews love seeing them and saves you a few dollars for car and driver. Enjoy the trip.

HI All:
I'm looking for an image of the Mill Bay Ferry in her original livery (blue) that would be suitable for print. Any ideas?

I am not sure if this the right thread to ask this, but has anyone else noticed, but yesterday when I was onboard the Coastal Celebration for the first time ever, I asked the Chief Steward if I could get a tour of the wheelhouse. Apparently because of Covid, wheelhouse visits are not supposed to be happening, has anyone else heard of this, or had something similar or different happen with this issue, it would be great to get some insight?

Hello everyone, this is my first post on here and I am not sure if this is the right place to post this. BC Ferries released the summer schedules and when I was looking at the Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay route I noticed that the vessels had changed. Usually the Coastal Renaissance is based out of Departure Bay from the end of June until mid October. The Queen of Cowichan then provides the extra service sailings also based out of Departure Bay. They now have the Cowichan staying as the primary vessel out of Departure Bay with the Queen of Alberni providing the extra service sailings. I have found this very odd and am wondering if anyone has seen this since the Renaissance came into service in 2008. (I don’t know because I am only 16 and no one I talk to remembers). The Renaissance is now being based out of Tsawwassen for the summer in place of the Alberni. So now Duke Point to Tsawwassen get 2 Coastals and Departure Bay to Horseshoe Bay get only C Class vessels? Surely this can’t be right and I am hoping this is an error on the website. Thank you to anyone who replies and has some information about this.
On another note, I am very happy I found this website to read about BC Ferries and engage with people who like them as much as me as no one I know has any interest in them.
Thank you, Jake Nicks

Here we go again. I truly don’t think that is happening because are Nanaimo based crew trained on Queen of Alberni and route 30 out Tsawwassen trained on Coastal Class? Does route 30 demand two Coastal Class in summer?

You make a good point about the crew being trained on the different classes. I didn’t think about that. As for route 30 demanding 2 Coastal Class even in the summer, I can’t imagine that it would considering they have 2 passenger decks and that seems like it would be a waste of space. The extra seating capacity could be much better used on the much walk-on passenger heavy route 2.

Queen of Alberni isn’t best designed vessel for route 2 because she will need to use berth 3 for overhead walkway and her small passenger cabin for number of passengers but the upside she does have best sundeck of C-Class.

Yes, the Queen of Alberni is destined for Route 2 this summer. Crew are gradually being sent over to train on the Alberni for the past month or two already.
