Langdale has had two berths for a long time if you take a look at the photo below. This is from my brother's collection. I am temporarily without my flatbed scanner so I photographed this newspaper clipping resulting in poor quality. The picture would date from sometime between 1970 and 1976, I believe. In 1976 the C class arrived on Route 2 freeing up B class vessels for the Langdale route (Route 3). I expect that Langdale may have been a two berth terminal since the time when both the Langdale and Sechelt Queens served the route. In the picture you can, of course, see the Sunshine Coast Queen and the Langdale Queen. Langdale Terminal - DOT collection - early 1970's - click on image for a larger image The Queen of Alberni was placed on route 1 (Tsawwassen - Swartz Bay) when it first went into service as the truck ferry supplementing the four V's on that route. Now that is a very nice photo if you forget about the low quality

I recall the Alberni had a goofy schedule too... I may be mistaken but there was a period where service was more frequent than it is now (although would stll transport less vehicles).
Just think in 10 years the C Class will be the archaic (major) vessels of the fleet.

The Alberni sure did have a goofy schedule! Spring/Summer Schedule of 1978. Queen of Alberni did the sailings with the asterisk beside the sailing times.

I've got one too. This schedule wasn't dated, but it's sometime after 1976 and before 1981. For all of us who aren't sure what the route numbers are...

This schedule must be for 1980 as it says the ship on route 10 is the QotN. If it was 1979 or earlier it would say QPR. If it was 1981 or later it would include the new C class added that year.

Wow, so the MV Mill Bay was on the Mill Bay route back then.... Thanks for posting that bit of history, much appreciated. (referring to the old schedules, especially with the route's ships listed)

Did you guys see the Summer schedule (right side)? There are two 1000 sailings to Victoria (one by the Alberni)!!! The Victoria ships still had their 6,000 horsepower engines back then, so I wonder who would leave first??

Earlier in this thread (November 12) there was a picture of some youth playing foosball on the car deck of a ferry. One idea has been put forth that this was brought on the boat by the individuals and simply taken out and used.
However, I have a second theory. When I graduated high school in 1997 many of the schools in Victoria rented a ferry to have what we called "The Grad Cruise". Essentially, the cafeteria was filled with lasagna, one side of the car deck was loaded up with games (foosball, paintball, VR video games), and the other was made into a dance hall. So the boat was filled with raging teens from all across the Victoria and the ferry became a floating night club.
I cannot recall the exact vessel we were on. But it only had one car deck and one passenger deck. Furthermore, 1997 was not only year this was done. I am fairly confident up this was done up to 2000. Of course, after 2001 insuring the event became too costly.
Anyways, those youth playing foosball could be from a similar grad event in future years. I am not sure what vessels they used in the subsequent years, but I recall friends telling me they used a bigger boat. There were some minor problems with the old boat, mostly cause by unruly teens. The place was quite packed, and there were not enough places for everyone to sit and talk. Also, as we boarded the boat we all pilled to one side, consequently we developed quite the list. I was a great time!

The Alberni was (and still is) much faster than the Vs, hence the reason for the different schedule. The Alberni would have a nice lead on the other 10am boat by the time she entered Active Pass.

so back then routes 2 and 3 were interlined with the Burnaby and Nanny.
That reminds me of the time when I came up with a schedule that involved all the C's doing a route 2 and 3 interline.

If I remember correctly hearing about the Grad Cruise they would of used the PM 3 which is the Queen of Burnaby. As she sat at Ogden Point during the off season. I also thought one year they used the Queen of Saanich.

I believe you are correct in that the first grad cruise was on the Princess Margaret 3, we certainly did load up at Ogden Point. I can vaguely recall the student bodies’ excitement when we were told we would be on the PM3, and the ensuing disappointment once we realized we were in fact on an old BC ferry. Sorry if that last statement offends some, but we though we would be on some fancy cruise ship <grin>.

the queen of burnaby was the PRINCESS MARGARITE 3 this happened in summer of 1997 wich i rode her from seattle to victoria and docked at ogden point and aslo she was the ROYAL VICTORIA in 1994 wich i saw her at that time. clipper navgaiton ran the PRINCESS MARGARITE 3 in the summer of 1997 since then they have been no car ferry from seattle to victoria and like to see that come back that route is good one to take and is part of the maritime history of puget sound. i hope that info is usefull and interesting.

What are your memories / thoughts on the service to Seattle on the old Burnaby? ie. the ship layout, the amenities, the scenery, and the crowd aboard (lots of people??).
Also, do you have pictures to post here? We'd love to see some inside pics of the Burnaby on the Seattle route....

i did not take photos of the inside of the ferry and i never do that at all sorry. when i rode her was sept 1997 and there was not much pepole onboard that i rember but i rode her from seattle wich i board her at pier 49. it was sunny the whole trip and it was good trip. i do not see the coho doing that run . i rode the princess martrite in the late 1980s and rode her sisiter at that time the vancouver island princess wich did that run too. both ferries were run by stena line wich did that to.do you rember stena line doing that run seattle to victoria in the late 1980s.

I presume that is your random "gotta type something" name.....that's funny, made me smile. =========================== Now, about the post: - you said that you rode the "Vancouver Island Princess". Was this the old CP ship "Princess of Vancouver" ? If so, I envy you greatly.....I rode that ship a few times as a kid on it's CP run from Nanaimo to downtown Vancouver, and really enjoyed exploring it's decks.

the vancouver island princess was the cp princess of vancouver and rode her too when i was very young too. i had problems replying on this topic so i now know how to reply on this site. the princess of vancouver is in china what to know more ckeck out robert d turner book pacific princess 2004 editon wich was redone that year wich was first published in 1977.

i just rember one thing roger on the princess of vancouver around 1983 or so the princess of vancouver had bow cut off and was used by the minstry of highways and highway ferry before 1986 then bc ferries took over those ferries on the coast in 1986. then when that happened she went to stena line and her bow was put back and became the VANCOUVER ISLAND PRINCESS. the route the princess of vancouver was on when she was with minstry of highways was comox powell river run. i thought that was worth mentioning since we were talking about the princess of vancouver. robert
