Does anyone have any photos of her in the BC Ferries colors? Some say she never sailed with BC Ferries, some say she did. I've heard variations of her being in the fleet between 3 weeks and 2 years.

Yeah he had a few photos of it at the drydock getting its bow replaced. It was in the Expo colours at that time.

The recently-updated (2001 or so) Robert D. Turner book Pacific Princesses narrows this window down to whithin a year, but doesn't go further than that in the details of the length of time that she served BCFerries. If you search the archives of this forum a little, you'll find the details, that I posted, about this. When I recently learned of both how short of a period of time that the Princess of Vancouver served BCFerries, as well as the bow modifications that were made for this service and then almost-immediately reversed (the bow was re-installed for the BC-government service out of Victoria on the old CP route, as the Vancouver Island Princess (or, VIP )), I was quite surprised to not have heard about this earlier, and with much more furor, than I did. The fact that not even John, the admin of this fine forum, knows the details on this (let alone all other in-the-know regular contributors to this forum), makes me suspect that some under-the-rug sweeping might have taken place in the past; It can't be cheap to both twice-modify the bow and paint-scheme of a ship that size in (probably) less then 2 years.

Turner's mention of the Princess of Vancouver's 'purchase' by BC Ferries from Highways, which you quoted, Tsaw. Term., seems a bit odd, as all the Highways routes were transferred to BC Ferries as of '85, (I checked my old schedules) and BC Ferries was pretty gung ho about repainting all their vessels in time for Expo. Turner mentioned '87 as the transfer date for the Princess of Vancouver.

I could very be mistaken, I've never read much on the Princess of Van but I do believe she was operated by a subsection of the department that wasn't as much into functional transportation but rather more touist type things. That could explain the later transfer. Unless I'm thinking of something else. In whcih case, I have done nothing.

If you're referring to a post, regarding the ship, that I posted months ago, your reaction was proabably similar to mine at the time of reading the updated version of the book; but I assure you, any quotes that I post are word-for-word, unless otherwise noted. Check it out, I know that atleast Vancouver's central library branch (downtown) has a copy of the (relatively) recently-updated version; just look towards the last pages of the book, where Turner has added most of the updates.

I"m definately not questioning the accuracy of your quote, and I have the earlier edition of that book, so I know that Turner's research is usually right on. It makes sense that the Princess would have worn BC Ferries colours from the end of Highways management in '85 to when she joined BC Steamships, in '87.

I was just looking at a very old news video taken in 1987, with a very young looking Hudson Mack. The Princess of Vancouver is in the drydock, she is being painted, her bow doors are being welded shut, her funnel is being extended to allow for the Maggie colours, and the doors are being built so that she can take on cars, at both terminals. She has a dining room and cafeteria being remodelled. Mentioned in the news cast is the fact that there are places being readied for slot machines to go on both the Princess of Vancouver and the Marquerite. The BC Steamship Corp. President Ed Lien hoped that the slots would bring in alot of tourists. Maybe the slots were supposed to pay for the work being done on the ship. Who knows.
I guess that the Seattle-Victoria run was such a money-loser that whoever was running it, had to think of other ways to bring in income.

An addition to my last post(IN other forums, I can go back into a post and edit them) My seniors groups had booked space on the Princess of Vancouver and Marguerite, just to use the slot machines.

What about the Princess of Vancouver? There was a photo of her tied up at a dock in China not too many years ago- has she since been scrapped as well?

You know, in all honesty, I did not give the P of V a seconds thought. I was only thinking of the BC Coastal "Steamship" fleet, versus any of the diesels. Not sure if the "Nan Hai Ming Zhu" still exists or not.......(Could not find anything to confirm either way)

I got 2 different names. According to this site: www.faktaomfartyg.se/princess_of_vancouver_1955.htmShe is now known as Princess Of South China Sea (as of 5/2001). However, according to: www.clydesite.co.uk/clydebuilt/viewship.asp?id=3696She is now known as Pearl Of South China Sea

According to John H.'s website (This one, administrator and Guru),
"The Princess of Vancouver was sold to the B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Highways in 1981. Her bow was modified to allow loading and unloading through the front of the vessel. She was placed on the Powell River - Comox run in 1982 (Those Beautiful Coastal Liners, 143 ; Clapp, 67)."

I guess those pictures prove for sure that the Princess of Vancouver was actually a part of the BC ferry fleet. Does anyone know how long this lasted?

She was part of the fleet but only for a short time. From 1985 to 1987 I believe, then she was put on the Seattle-Victoria route then bought by Stena Lines, It was something like that.
