:)I remember back to when bc ferries bought this asture basto ferry back a number of years ago and thought she might last a decade or so, and it looks like this plain jane nautical wonder may be around as long as the steel electrics! her voyage out here was not unlike bringing the Lady Rose around, as she took a pounding! :)mrdot.

The Queen of Chilliwack's getting re-painted! Taken yesterday at Deas: From across the basin. With the Lomaiviti Princess. This will be the last time that these two ships meet. An auto carrier sails past...

Queen of Chilliwack in berth-1 at Departure Bay on June 11, 2011. - Queen of Oak Bay is arriving at berth-2. - Queen of Cowichan is in berth-3. (it must be infuriating to the taxpayers of the 1970s to see the 'Cowichan sitting idle on a weekend. BCFS should consider the optics of this and run all their ships all day long . And I should stop writing parody of other posts ;D). ------------------------------------ Photos from Piano-God Beach in Nanaimo: - I like the blend of one ship in the background of another. - Queen of Chilliwack Bay- "The Gathering of the Slugs"

Compare with November 21st, 2010: (It's the other side of the ship. They didn't make that many modifications in her refit...)

:)to mr. horn, nice pics. of the venerable wack! this is one purchase made a few years back, that has stood the test of time, as I wondered about the wisdom back when we were first acquiring the basto thing? so the moral of the story is maybe one of these questionable offshore acquisitions will pan out over time! :)mrdot.

For the record, she didn't have the interior change this time. Apparently this was just a steelwork, fresh paint, Macgregor door, and LSA installation refit. I guess the interior will come along next time around this coming winter

Do we have any idea as to when her next refit will be? Have the dates been set yet??

Do we have any idea as to when her next refit will be? Have the dates been set yet?? Phase-2 is sometime between September 2011 and May 2012. - somewhere in there, the Chilliwack needs to be replacement-vessel for the Burnaby's route, so maybe that happens in October-November, and then Chilliwack goes into-shop after that ? Just a guess on that part.

One of the things that I was most interested in seeing from the Chilliwack's recent phase-1 refit was the MacGregor doors on the car deck. First off, here's the company webpage, describing the flood-control doors. - notice the reference to the installation on the Queen of the North. www.macgregor-group.com/?id=1217The Chilliwack has 4 MacGregor doors: - 2 on each side of the centre casing, dividing each side of deck-2 into 3 sections. - The 2 outside sections (fore and aft) have stairway access in the centre casing. - the mid-ships section only has elevator access, but people can use the hatch-door (part of the MacGregor door) for access if the elevator were to be out of service. Here's some photos of the opened MacGregor doors: (photos from while were were in port, of course) Note the white arcs painted on the deck, to show the path of the moving door. Also there are warning signs in yellow on the deck. The doors and the jamb on the other-side are easy to spot because they're yellow. Part of the safety strategy, I presume, so that people noticing the doors and don't run into them. (photos and video are by me, from July 9-11, 2011 on a Route-40 trip).

Views of closed MacGregor doors on the Queen of Chilliwack's car-deck. From early Sunday morning when I was watching a kayak launch from the #2 end. From Sunday afternoon, when we were docked at Klemtu: From Monday morning, when we were loading at Bella Coola: - showing the open hatch door. - the midships section, which only has elevator access (besides the hatch-in-the-door). - close-up of the hatch door.

These MacGregor doors appear to be very much the same as those that were installed on the QotN. I am fairly certain that they did their job on the North, delaying her plunge for the bottom by maybe 10 minutes.
On the negative side, however, these doors mean that a significant chunk of car deck space is no longer available for revenue traffic. The QotN auto capacity was listed at 115 in its later years, but 157 in earlier times. The change, as far as I know, was related to the MacGregor doors being in place. These doors also increase unloading/loading time significantly.
late addition: I assume these doors will not be used when the Wack is serving on a southern route?

late addition: I assume these doors will not be used when the Wack is serving on a southern route? I asked lots of questions, but I didn't ask that one. But my guess is that the MacGregor doors will be required to be used when crossing Georgia Strait on the Comox-Westview route (or for the Westview - Buckley Bay temporary route). My reasonings: - for the last 2 times that Chilliwack subbed for the Burnaby, the "no access to car-deck during voyage" rule was in effect. - also the ship was required to operate as a single-ender with the watertight door at the bow. Me thinks that it's only in Jervis Inlet that the regulations are eased.
