Here's a photo of the Queen of Nanaimo that I should upload to Shipspotting.com. ;D I'm on the 'Alberni at Tsawwassen's berth-3. - Queen of New Westminster is moving over from rudder-trials to berth-4 to start her abbreviated May 18th day. - Queen of Nanaimo is arriving and headed for berth-2.

The Nanaimo is almost looking as grungy as was her sister, the Burnaby, a year or so ago. They need to lower a certain recently hired deckhand over the side with a brush and a bucket of paint. He does have some experience as a painter, right?

Queen of Nanaimo with fresh paint @ Tsawwassen Terminal - summer 2003. This photo taken not long after the 'new' BC Ferries came into existence, complete with the 'wave' (aka slug) paint scheme. The Nanaimo was one of the first vessels to be blessed with the new scheme. A couple of notable things about this photo: - the ship appears to have quite a list happening, & - they are using the crane to haul stores up from the stern to the cafeteria level. photo © Mr. DOT by Wett Coast, on Flickr[/size]

A couple of notable things about this photo: - the ship appears to have quite a list happening, & - they are using the crane to haul stores up from the stern to the cafeteria level. This is very common with the Nanaimo and the specific loading pattern of Route 9. It appears she would have just arrived at Tsawwassen at the time, and due to the fact that there's only one Deckhand bringing the empty stores dollies down from the Galley Flats, this tells me that traffic is still being discharged from the vessel. Generally the Starboard side will always have all of the Forward facing traffic. The Port side will usually end up having 1 or 2 lanes worth of traffic facing aft that still needs to obviously make the turn around the stern still. They're usually the last ones off, because they were the last to board. They would have just been waiting their turn to disembark I'd assume. As soon as all of the traffic is off of the vessel, she sits with an even keel. It doesn't take much weight on one side of these ships to make them list. Ohh I do not miss putting up and taking down those chains around the stern one bit.... One other note: The Chilliwack appears to be over in Berth 1, and is still very much sporting the BC Flag livery ;D

I got a distant look at her on Sunday, but couldn't tell if her appearance had worsened drastically since I was aboard her in April. ...obviously, it has. As we all know, Route 9 and 17 vessels just don't get the proper downtime since the Tsawwassen was retired. All we can do is hope that she at least receives an acid wash before the summer schedules go into effect...

It appears that it is getting progressively more difficult to keep the Nanaimo & Burnaby looking shipshape. They need to be replaced as soon as possible, or undergo significant annual maintenance just to keep them in service. Do we know anything concrete about when replacement vessels will be built and what sort of designs are being looked at?

I don't suppose BCF will scrap plans for a replacement for at least one of them and embark upon an MLU-on-steroids such as was done on the Queen of New West, in favour of saving money?

The problem with that idea is that BCF can't operate without either of those ships while they'd be in-refit for 12 months or so. Unless they wanted to use the Chilliwack permanent for a year or more on the Comox route....

The only real problem with the Chilliwack is that the people don't like her, plus she can't keep the schedule. So change the schedule for the time being and let the people suck it up. They had to deal with far worse ferries than the Wack in the past.

easy for you to say you dont live here No I don't, but I've ridden both ships, and the Queen of Chilliwack in 1.5 meter seas and minimal visibility due to snow and high winds, and honestly, the ride was totally fine. It's an issue that's been way overblown. I mean, sure, the Wack, Nanny, and Burn all need to be replaced, but since that obviously won't be happening for the next few years, the people need to stop complaining. If you hate taking the ferry so much, then do your shopping on the Sunshine Coast. Easy as that.

So please realize that this is comedy, and no need to reply or challenge the loud comments such as "suck it up" or "I hate that conservation group", because he's just joking. Really, he's told me not to take his comments seriously, so I suggest that we just ignore those kind of brash remarks.

I have always felt a bit of concern since the Tsawwassen was retired, suitable back up ships for route 9 seems to be very limited. To myself BC ferries idea of running close to 50 year old ship with the only real other boat that can run this route being very dedicated to its own run seems overly short sited. I know that my route is not a big money maker but the Nanny does see its very busy times, yes the winter shows lower numbers and when the years of Tsawwassen in the winter and the Nanny doing the summer runs seemed to work out well. I wait to hear the news run on a long weekend all sailings cancelled due to a broken boat and nothing to fill in for it. All I know is I will be sad when the Nanny is retired but it really seems that BC ferries needs to come up with a plan of replacing the ship or allowing a back up to come in to fill in while it is in for better up keep. Just my two cents

There are no plans for a replacement vessel for the Queen of Nanaimo. She had a big life extension refit just a couple of years ago with the addition of LSA slides. I think the plan was to extend life until 2017. I don't know what they are but some significant regulatory changes are due in 2017 which may affect the life of many of the older boats. She does look a little rough in those pictures. mostly just rust streaks staining the paint after a full winter on the run.
There were some stories about managers taking a look at possible replacement for the burnaby in Eyurop last year which came to nothing
