Queen of Nanaimo approaching Berth 2, Village Bay. Great photo Scott! I guess great minds think alike I took pretty much that same shot: I'm not sure which thread to put this one in since it has two ferries, so I'm putting it here - Nanaimo and Cumberland at Village Bay: Here's one of Nanaimo from earlier in the day, approaching Tsawwassen with New West trailing in the distance:

Beautiful photos. Loving the crisp sunset at Village Bay with the nice and clean paintjob on the Nanaimo.

But what did you do to the Foot Passenger gate Chris?? They were having problems moving it at Tsawwassen. We almost had to offload via the vehicle deck until we waited long enough for them to get it in place, lol!

That was actullay me, but if you want to refer to me as ferryman, I'll take the credit Anyways the gate derailed and got stuck, so I thought it out quickly and solved the problem.

Do I spy an alter-ego in our midsts? Maybe the time has come for an exorcism to re-unite the two souls as one?

I was disappointed today to see that such minimal maintenance was done on the 'Nanaimo's exterior decks on her recent refit. There are still some spots where the coating has bubbled up with water underneath, so they obviously did nothing like what they did with the 'New Westminster, which still looks almost good as new.
There's so many rusty areas that in no time the old girl will look as bad as she did before; I wonder if the deck was even painted, or just touched up in the worst areas?

Here is another 'fresh' scan, this time featuring the Queen of Nanaimo at Horseshoe Bay. The date: 15 July 1978. I was on my way to Powell River to attend the wedding of one of my brothers later that day. I believe the Nanaimo was operating as an extra on Route 2 at the time. I believe that I was aboard one of her sisters which was serving route 3 at the time. The Nanaimo has not changed a lot over all the years since 1978. She has lost her car deck portholes, but gained the rear hatch windows. There is no sign of Ferryman's big comfy couch on the aft end of the sun deck. :)while the Nanaimo is basically the same as she was back then, she has sure lost these traditional colours, and with the rust and the slug costume, looks dreadful! At least she was spared her sister's Princess Margurete III costume! Our version of private enterprise sure knows how to paint the ugly rebrands! :'(mrdot.

Excellent photo.
I'd actually like to point out that she still has alot of her car deck port holes still though. Some have been removed for car deck bulkhead fire resistancy, and others were actually just painted over.
Also, the comfy chairs that were on the galley flats were removed at refit, and replaced with aluminum benches. The comfy chairs were leftover from the Queen of Burnabys stint as the PMIII
The Nanaimo is still a proud old ship of the fleet. ;D

Just thought I'd post a small photo essay on how the New gates on the sterns of the Nanaimo and Burnaby work. The Nanaimo just had these gates installed on her refit this past fall, and the Burnaby was the first to recieve these about a year ago(except hers are not white and pretty) The old gates used to be hinged on the same end of the stern doors are hinged on, therefore providing a barrier inside the car deck. They were neglected, bent out of shape, and were a pain to use. These new gates are hinged opposite to the way the old ones were. They can serve as a barrier for the car deck with the doors open, and then also reconfigured so they can hug the stern for safer transit of the stores dollies. Before there used to be two rungs of chains strung around the stern, a tedious process to try and setup and dismantle. So here's the gates while the doors are closed and stowed. Here's a photo of the gates used as a barrier while the doors are open. And finally, a photo of the gates setup while the stores are being hoisted up to the aft end of Deck 4 (behind the galley / steering flats)

Same view, but from a different point of view this afternoon. More to come later. Interesting to see the QoN docked bow-first at Long Harbour. I assume she was re-docked stern-in prior to loading after the life raft deployment exercise was complete?

I don't think they turned her around for loading, but I don't know for sure. It would have made loading easier, but the time that would be needed to turn the ship around wouldn't have made sense. Two more:
