'Alberni arrives just as the Seaspan combo is leaving Nanaimo  Zoom distortion makes the 2 ships appear to be attached.  ---------------------------- Leaving Nanaimo on her 5:45pm sailing to Tsawwassen.  In Fairway Channel  Lovely view with the west sides of Newcastle and Protection islands in the foreground and the Coast Mountains in the background. - Queen of Oak Bay is visible too.  |

Yes, a nice photo. The Alberni looked sweet back then. This is at Swartz Bay, berth 1. I believe that the Alberni almost always used berth 2 which was constructed especially for her. The date would be some time from 1976 (when she was new and put in service as the route 1 'truck ferry') to about 1980 or 81 (when she was permanently pulled off of Route 1). :)both of the slides you've posted tonite are from my early ferry years, this one taken in Swartz Bay looking over to berth 1 when the Alberni was first operating as a truck ferry on this main route. I think this is when she looked her best, as built. My brother has posted some of my pics, all taken about this time, when I was active with my camera and sketch pad- those were the early days of dogwood fleet! mrdot. |

Sped-up video (5x speed) shot from Sugarloaf Mountain above Departure Bay, Nanaimo.
- December 24, 2012, from noon to 1:00pm.
Showing the Queen of Alberni heading around Entrance Island, towards Duke Point. Also showing Queen of Oak Bay passing Snake Island and entering Departure Bay.
Then showing Queen of Oak Bay in berth-2 discharging traffic and then loading for next sailing. I like how you can see the traffic lanes loading, and even see some late-arriving vehicles at the toll booths and then hustling down to the berth for loading.
Then ending with the reverse of the opening: Oak Bay leaves the bay, and Alberni appears from behind Newcastle Island.
A fun hour spent outdoors during a non-rain period.
ps:
- at 4:47 mark, the Queen of Coquitlam lets off a bunch of smoke. But she's not even in-service that day.

Queen of Alberni on a dreary winter day in 1978-79 - Georgia Strait near Tsawwassen. This was not long after she entered service as the dedicated truck/over height ferry on Route One. At that time her scheduled crossing time was 75 minutes, considerably faster than the V class crossing time. I have probably originally posted this photo way back c2006. Short video clip of the Queen of Coquitlam leaving Departure Bay, with a cameo from the Queen of Alberni which is headed for Duke Point.
- shot from the far end of Departure Bay beach.
- 5:00pm on January 20, 2013.
- sped-up 1.5 times (just a bit)
I was very happy with the timing of the Alberni appearing just as the Coquitlam was departing.

- the opening sequence is the same as some of the closing sequence, but at a slower speed.
