A visit to Pipers Lagoon park in Nanaimo today gave me the footage for this video. - it shows the C'Renaissance leaving the area, and then shows Queen of Alberni arriving into the area and headed to Duke Point.
The video starts with a sped-up display of morning sky colours. Later on, you can see the impact of fog that was rolling in rather quickly (the impact is poor clarity for seeing the Queen of Alberni).

Queen of Alberni off DeltaPort container terminal near Tsawwassen en route for Duke Point, Vancouver Island - 29 September 2013. This was during the 'wind storm' that led BCFS to cancel many ferries during the afternoon & evening of Sept. 29th. As far as I could see, the wind & sea conditions were not bad enough to warrant the cancellations or the media chatter. The container ships in the background are the Kyoto Express & Albert Maersk. photo © WCK-JST by Wett Coast, on Flickr

Yeah I agree there. The wind does not seem all that bad in that photo. If people knew they ferries could of sailed there probably would of been lots of angry people. I mean why did the SOVI leave and the Celebration sail and the SOBC dident? That is weird.

Could the homeport been a contributing factor? Perhaps they were looking forwards and predicting when the worst of the weather was expected and wanted the boats homeported by then?

Has anybody else heard that Alberni has been "removed from service"? On October 2/13 I received an email from the ferry service, and I'm in mourning if it's true! The new ships make me seasick unless I stay on the vehicle deck, but my beautiful Queen of Alberni allowed me to be a "normal" passenger.

The new ships make me seasick unless I stay on the vehicle deck, but my beautiful Queen of Alberni allowed me to be a "normal" passenger. I'm setup to receive service notices for all of BCF's routes, but I don't recall seeing a recent one for Route 30... That said, she's still running, but she could be taken out of service soon for refit (last year she was removed on October 10th). Replacement during her refit will be, as usual, the New West. That's my personal favourite vessel on Route 30!

The New West is needed on route 1 over the Thanksgiving weekend. After that time she is available to sub for the Alberni on route 30. I believe the start of the Alberni's refit is determined by the date of Thanksgiving in Canada, which is always on the 2nd Monday in October.

right after thanksgiving the 16th the Alberni will be going out according to the reservations page! I plan to do a few trips on the New West during that time! I haven't seen a service notice about it yet though!

Queen of Alberni is the feature in this busy Nanaimo harbour photo. - It's from the evening of September 17, 2013, and I'm on a hill far away (College Drive). Photo shows the cruise ship Norwegian Sun leaving, the Quinsam headed around the 'Sun's stern, and a colourful freighter. - out of frame in the bottom-right area is the Seaspan Challenger pusher tug. Queen of Alberni is arriving at Duke Point at approx. 5:15pm

My video of Alberni, seen near Duke Point, on May 10, 2014.
Nothing special, nothing unique. But if you enjoy watching a ferry glide across the water, you might like this.
Near the end is her departure turn near Snake Island, as she turns for Entrance Island and beyond, and I always like watching this turn, as the ship goes from broadside to end-on and then to semi-broadside in my view. This is seen at 2:28 of the video.

Q'Alberni takes a leading role in the first part of this video that I shot.
Enjoy the scenes of her arriving/leaving at Duke Point, and the unloading and loading of her traffic.

Whenever Queen of Alberni arrives at Duke Point, Nanaimo likes to put on a special welcoming show. - this is Nanaimo Marine Festival fireworks - 10:15PM on July 26, 2014.

A couple more Alberni with fireworks shots, from Nanaimo Marine Festival, on July 26, 2014. - yes, the main purpose of this set is to show fireworks; the ferry pic wouldn't pass muster at Shipspotters.com With Vancouver fireworks also visible in the right background ---------- The arriving 'Alberni was travelling visibly slower than normal. The crew were likely keeping her slow, to allow the passengers to enjoy a bit of the fireworks show.

Q'Alberni looking lovely in the evening light, on September 28, 2014. She has just left Duke Point on her 5:45pm sailing to Tsawwassen. The cliffs of Gabriola are beautiful when lit by the evening sun

Jim obviously you were there today? I was on the nine am sailing of the Vancouver Island. Was amazed that they started the day being and early for the Alberni. I arrived at about seven forty-five and they were already working away! Saw water coming out of holes I didn't even know existed!
When is she scheduled to return to service? Seeing her side to side against the Coastal Inspiration today gave a great highlight of the stark difference passenger space, the CI itself overbuilt for the route. I'm sure for many travellers the New West is a welcome sight.

I am suprised there is no service notice about the New West taking over for a month. When the Alberni goes out for a day or so they at least post a service notice!

I'm sure for many travellers the New West is a welcome sight. I was on the 1 PM sailing of the SoVI. I gather that the Alberni is out for about a month. There is no doubt in my mind that she is seriously short on passenger space & amenities. Conversely, her running mate, the C. Inspiration, has one whole passenger deck too many.
