Next time, instead of double, triple, and quadruple posting, it would be better if you edit your previous post and add more to it instead of creating a second post. There is a conveniently-located edit button on the right side of the page at the beginning of your post. Thanks!

It appears according to The departures page on BC ferries website that the Queen of Alberni is returning to service effective the 8:15 sailing tonite. The ship is in berth 3 at Tsawwassen. The crew had plenty of time to transfer ships since the 3:15 to DP and 5:45 return trip was canceled due to weather.
Elsewhere the Queen of Cowichan returned to service today, but due to weather she and the Surrey are staying on their respective routes. Ie no Queen of Surrey in Departure Bay tonight.
Queen of Cumberland returned to her regular service this afternoon and the Bowen Queen is now on the Fulford run.
I think Salish Raven is in Tsawwassen now.
Busy day for ship movements.

I miss the Queen of Alberni and after Covid-19 has been flushed down the toilet how about some of us ferry fans meet up for a round trip on her, after Covid-19

I have been feeling just a bit frustrated about my inability to get south and do some ferry trips & photography. Mostly, its the situation with COVID-19 that is to blame. As such, I have no new ferry images to put up on my Flickr photo site or to contribute to the WCFF. But I can always dig back into the archives and do some scanning ... An almost brand new Queen of Alberni @ berth 3, Tsawwassen Terminal, on 25 November 1976. When built the Alberni was the race horse of the BC Ferry fleet. It worked route 1, based out of Tsawwassen, and had a crossing time of 75 minutes as opposed to 100 for the other ferries on that route. It had a single car deck and was designed to carry overheights (trucks, RV's, etc). As such, it was built with minimal facilities on its upper decks, unlike its C-class sisters. It was at that time blessed with almost perfect symmetry fore and aft, as was also the case with its C-class sisters.
In the background you can see the Roberts Bank coal terminal. This was quite a few years before the Deltaport container terminal was added.
I took this photo (scanned from a Kodachrome slide) when I was 22. Unfortunately, I was not so picky about trying to get unobstructed views ... Oh well!

Loved how she looked in her original state. I can't understand why they got rid of her solariums and exterior wheelhouse stairs.

In late-October in November it had sailing cancellations both for a propeller issue and gearbox issue. I do not know what has it sidelined right now. Tradition would suggest gearboxes, a C Class history of unreliability - but that's not actually an answer.
Interesting there is no return date or even forecast. Could be so many different things I am not going to guess. Where is the Alberni right now?

My understanding is she had a catastrophic gearbox failure back in October.
Speculating here, but if it requires a gear replacement, those aren't exactly off the shelf parts, and are usually manufactured to order. Lead time is measured in months.

Then it’s sure a great thing that not many people will be taking the ferries for the next few months so BCF can take the New West off of Tsawwassen-Swartz bay and relocate without any negative impacts!

I still don’t think the Coastal Renaissance will do route 30 from Tsawwassen because crews from Tsawwassen are not trained on the Coastal Class. I doubt BC Ferries will train crews on Coastal Class because a new vessel will take over Queen of Alberni role on route 30 within ten years. Route 30 doesn’t need two Coastal on it because there is not enough vehicles or passenger demand to justify to Coastal Class.

I mean Route 30 doesn't need one Coastal and that hasn't stopped them.
The reality is BC Ferries major vessel fleet is awkward, and not really appropriate to more general needs. And it looks like we are at least a decade away from Major Vessel Replacement #1 setting sail, best case scenario.

Could you elaborate on the 'awkwardness' of the major vessels and their assignments, Dane?

The one thing about Route 30 is that it demanding more lift off capacity for carrying heavy commercial traffic these days. Granted, both the New West and Alberni’s were modified for the purpose of accommodating the most amount of commercial traffic, given the deck space available. But, personally I’m starting to wonder if the route is beginning to outgrow those vessels? Hard to believe, I know. A little over a year ago when the New West was covering for one of the Alberni’s last refits, I can recall that the Cowichan being deployed to Route 30 for an overnight truck/commercial drop trailer round trip to help keep up with the demand at the time.

Seaspan has their two new vessels coming shortly which will increase their capacity per sailing. Haven't read anything about BC Ferries looking to add a true truck/trailer ferry, but if they don't, they will most likely lose market share. The ' Alberni isn't really well designed for that purpose.
