More of the Alberni arriving at and departing from Departure Bay in the evening of March 11, 2012. I love the scene of a ferry sailing past that tip of Newcastle Island.... With a seaplane

The Queen of Alberni 'in transition' off of Deltaport - summer 2003; the funnel had been 'slugged', but the livery was otherwise still in the 'Expo' scheme. photo © Mr. DOT by Wett Coast, on Flickr[/size] This is a scan from a colour negative original.

:)this transformation shot off deltaport, covers the period of the transformation of our ferry fleet to the so-called private model, and the change of our port to a major boxboat hub! mrdot.

:)one of my favorite pics. and drawings of my earlier years are of this vessel, as built, in her truck ferry layout, coming into tsawwassen almost in the same view, but in the older terminal, and original dogwood livery! :)mrdot.

Queens of Oak Bay and Alberni, seen on Easter afternoon 2012, from atop Sugarloaf Mountain. Evidently only one vessel is allowed to be near the entrance of the bay at a time, and so Alberni slowed and waited outside for 10 minutes or so while a slightly-late Oak Bay departed the bay. - another reason why Duke Point is needed. Alberni is wasting time while Oakie leaves the bay Alberni heading in.

A similar situation happened back in February, when I was on the departing Queen of Coquitlam, and the ' Alberni was waiting for us to clear the entrance to the bay. As we passed her, she gave a short blast of her horn. The ' Alberni waiting for the ' Coquitlam to clear the entrance to the bay. Back underway as we pass her.

This is odd. Active Pass would seem to be a riskier place than the narrows of Departure Bay, so why is it any different? They both receive fairly heavy marine traffic too.

Queen of Alberni approaching Duke Point at 7:00am on May 5, 2012. - I'm at Jack Point park in order to photograph the arriving cruise ship Norwegian Pearl. A comparison of ships. Looks like they are lined up at the start of a race. - they are both waiting for Quinsam to pass by.
