The Queen of Alberni is slowly making her way in to Departure Bay. The Queen of Cowichan just came in so all berths are currently full. I assume the Alberni might just hang out in the bay until the Cowichan heads back out. Fun to see four ferries in Departure Bay this morning!

Does anyone have an idea when the Queen of Alberni is going to be put back in service?
I want to see the Queen of New West on the Duke Point to Tsawwassen route before it is put back on the Swartz Bay run.

Today I took a ride on the Queen of Alberni from Departure Bay to Tsawwassen which was not at capacity at all and pleasant ride. I notice that it should have taken 2 hours and 10 minutes but Queen of Alberni manage to do in 2 hours. Have this routing only being take only 2 hours for both vessels? I am posting these photos because it rare to see route 30 vessels to serve Departure Bay. Queen of Alberni by Blue Bus Fan, on Flickr Queen of Alberni by Blue Bus Fan, on Flickr

Is 2h10m the published sailing time?
It was always 2 hours when it was Departure Bay to Tsawwassen as Route 30.
And maybe it's just my interpretation of space playing games with me, but wouldn't the sailing to Departure Bay be at the minimum equadistance is not a little shorter?

My reservation said leave Departure Bay at 1:15 pm and arrive at Tsawwassen at 3:25 pm and we docked at 3:15 pm.

BCF was advertising it as "just over 2 hours" so 2:10 is probably a good block time, but in practice, its been taking less. Was on the 0745 this AM and was not full whatsoever, We did it in just a hair over 2 hours.

We had to slow down and change corse for Spirit of British Columbia so it could be slightly faster than 2 hours.

In her original configuration, Queen of Alberni was quite the hotrod, easily the fastest ship in the fleet. Not sure if that's still true. I remember watching her from Pipers Lagoon shoot out of Departure Bay in the early 80's. She would be out of sight in no time.

According to the fleet three Coastal Class can go 23 knots which are fastest in fleet; while the Queen of Alberni can go 22 knot so knot slowly than originally built and is the fourth fast vessel in the fleet.

They slowed it down through Active Pass following the Alberni's little 1979 incident there.

Queen of Alberni will be off route 30 from June 20, 2022 until October 11, 2022 according to reservation page. The Queen of Alberni will be #2 out of Departure Bay for the Summer Season, Sailing between Horseshoe Bay-Departure Bay. It was a mentioned that there was a plan to move her over to route #2 last summer, during the time that she was doing Dock fittings in Horseshoe Bay and Langdale in late Spring. It was told that there was a plan for the switch with the Coastal Renaissance, in order to do a shuffle around the fleet in so that the Celebration and Renaissance could accumulate more hours on their engines before there MLU's. I have a feeling a lot of people hearing the news will be quiet annoyed that Route #2 is getting a capacity downgrade as the Alberni carries less cars, but it allows for the Alberni to operate on Route #3, if the need for a vessel swap or a Manager Discretion sailing ever arose, especially given its Full Size lower Car deck.

Which Province could easily change the plan due them having more control over board. I could see people complaining leading to Province change this last minute once more people become aware of the change.

Queen of Alberni nearing its Vancouver Island berth @ Duke Point, near Nanaimo. This shot was taken from the ferry Queen of Oak Bay en route to Nanaimo's Departure Bay Terminal. The power of a 400 mm zoom lens was used for this photo as the Alberni & Oak Bay were a few km apart.

The first Route 2 sailing for the Queen of Alberni is set for tomorrow, as the ship heads up from Tsawwassen as we speak. Surprised they actually went ahead with this change, but will be interesting to see how that goes... Her sailings leave Departure Bay at 0740, 1225 and 1700 tomorrow.

Totally unsuitable for a route with a fair number of foot passengers. Combine this with 12 sailings a day on route one, and it will be a summer of discontent for ferry passengers, particularly in this post-lockdown travel explosion.

Queen of Alberni has arrived at Departure Bay, and is currently at the maintenance berth. Strange to see her here.

First sailing for the Alberni out of Departure Bay, and she's late due to "Crew member enroute to assist with boarding". She didn't move from the maintenance berth until about 7:35 and her scheduled departure time was 7:40.
