Another photo of the Alberni, again from my brother's camera. This is from Expo year and was taken along the lower Fraser River with the Alex Fraser Bridge in the background. DOT photo ©Wow! Neat photo. Was she undergoing a refit of some sort at the time? I noticed there is some sort of small shipyard at that exact location. The Queen of the Islands was actually sitting in that almost exact spot, just only a few meters upstream from there a few weeks ago. www.pbase.com/ferryman/mv_queen_of_the_islandsBoth of tonights postings of scans were neat to see though. I didn't realize that a couple of ferries, has ventured upstream from Deas. I had just assumed that only the Klitsa and Kahloke were the only ones, to fill in on the Albion route.

I believe that the location of the Alberni in the above photo is the same place that the Queens of Lego were put together about six years later. I am not sure why the Alberni was there - refit or something else? I will ask my brother. I am sure he will know.
As for BCF vessels up the river - There is the Sidney, of course. The only one to ever have made regular sailings - the Q of Richmond, perhaps, between her namesake city and upstream locations on special moonlight sailings at the winter solstice.

I see some scaffolding on the main car deck, and there is some plywood over one of her forward windows.

Yes, I remember driving over the Alex Fraser Bridge every Saturday to visit my grandmother in White Rock and seeing the Spirit's being put together at that location.

I too remember back in the summer/fall of '92, while commuting to and from Vancouver to Victoria, driving along River Rd. and seeing the progress of the S of BC. It was quite interesting. I remember the main passenger deck being assembled on the dockside, raised on stilts. Same goes for the funnel. Back then, I didn't have a clue what it was going to look like, but I wish I had a camera with me....

Maybe they did the expansion of the passenger deck there. I can't remember which year they did it though.

Regarding this photo... My brother informs me that Vito's shipyard got the contract for the second rebuild of the Alberni 'in the 90's', he says. In this photo the Expo logo is still on the funnel so I believe the date to be about 1987. I assume these logos were removed not long after Expo year. By second rebuild I assume that means reconfiguration of the passenger space. The first rebuild was completed in 1984 and when finished she remained dressed beautifully in pastel blue. Q of Alberni just off of Tsawwassen during trials following lifting - 18 June 1984 - photo by INFocus (J Barber) DOT Collection BTW, this location, or close to it was where the open house was held in 1974 for the then new to the fleet Queen of Surrey (aka the North).

Just an unrelated question here Jim, that photo looks great...
Is that the Alex Fraser Bridge under construction in the background?

The AF bridge was opened in 1986 so that shot was probably taken after the summer season ended. You'll notice metal triangles on top of the tower for cable placement and also the trees in the background are changing colour. Here's a gallery of the bridge under contruction: www.geocities.com/big_bridges1/fraser.html

Thanks to Dane and his BC Ferries Timeline, it appears this was taken at Vito Steel Boat and Barge Construction LTD during her passenger deck expansion which began in May 1986.

Here is a close up of the photo above... The bridge does appear to be under construction. Also the deciduous trees in the distance appear to be without leaves. The time of the year likely late winter or early spring.

I wouldn't want to be on the "manly ferry" after my Sunshine breakfast! Here is a video showing the evacuation chutes on the Alberni being deployed. ca.youtube.com/watch?v=Wb1ml7gr2H8

That is either the Coquitlam or Cowichan. No, it's definitely the Alberni. Neither the Coquitlam nor the Cowichan have marine evacuation slides.

Also, if you look on the left hand side you can see the hoist used to lower the rescue boat below the outside decks. Only the Alberni has this.

Look at the sun deck. The distance between wheelhouses and funnel CLEARLY show beyond any doubt that it is the Alberni. NO question. Coquitlam, Cowichan and Oak Bay have a greater distance from wheelhouse to funnel and the angle does not "skew" it enough to make it anything but the Alberni. Besides, even at that angle, the solariums would be visible, there are none here.

Very specific question - where was the Queen of Alberni running between '85 and '91? For May 1985, I know she was on the Route-2. I took her on a band trip during that month. (but that's just the front end of your time range........)

From the best of my recollection, she was running Route 2, with the occasional foray on to Route 3.

And she should have stayed on Route 3! They deserve to put up with the crap we've dealt with on Route 30 all these many years... 2 hours on her is much, much more painful then 40 minutes...

During the summer of 1990 the Alberni was doing route 30, Departure Bay to Tsawwassen. I have a few photos of her taken from Newcastle Island in August, 1990 while she was doing that route. Route 30, originally dubbed the 'Mid Island Express', was served by one ship only for the first few years of its existence, and that ship was the Alberni. Route 30 became a two ship route after the QoNWM was lifted & re powered in 1991, I think?
