The sight of a Jones tug always gives me a sinking feeling... But seriously, I get to see the new DAVID J frequently, at her Nanaimo regular mooring spot. That's a bad one Mike! I have a question for you, since when did they start locking the gate to the dock that David J is currently moored at? The last two times I've been to Nanaimo it's been locked, is that a permanent thing? That was always a favorite place of mine to go to. I asked an elderly gentleman who was walking by if he knew about it and he went off on a profanity laden tirade, he obviously wasn't happy about it either! The main gate has always been closed, but open on either side. I haven't been there in a few weeks (ok maybe 2 months) and so that change would be new to me too. I assume where talking about the "W.Mills Visiting Vessel" float, where the Polar Bear yacht usually ties up.

The side gates should be open again when the weather warms up.

MV Kuper loading cars while Seaspan Pacer shifts barges in the backgound. The loaded chip barge will be making the short trip to the Crofton pulp mill, the source of the mushroom like cloud off in the distance. MV Kuper ~ Chemainus by Chris City, on Flickr

Kuper seen by me from a roadside location in Chemainus, as she loads and leaves on a trip from Chemainus to Penelakut Island. - November 13, 2017

Amazing what a difference a year makes. One year and one day after Low Light Mike's post, the Kuper has gone to refit. This time, she gets a enlarged wheelhouse. Looks very similar to the Skeena's wheelhouse now. Viewed from the road parallel to Pt. Hope Shipyard. MV Kuper in refit at Pt Hope Shipyards by Deck-dog SSI, on Flickr

MV Kuper returned back home to Route 20 today. I happened to catch a quick glimpse of her again last night while she was tied up in Swartz Bay, Berth 5. I imagine that the widened Wheelhouse is a welcomed change for the crew to have now. MV Kuper by Deck-dog SSI, on Flickr

Kuper on route 20, departing on the 3:35pm sailing from Chemainus. The sun unfortunately decided to duck behind a cloud 5 minutes before, and come back out about 30 seconds after this photo was taken. Photo taken on June 18, 2019.

It looks like the community is interested in renaming the Kuper, there could be possibly of another vessel being renamed in BC Ferries history. Found Here

It looks like the community wants to rename the Kuper to Ken Thomas, there could be possibly of sixth vessels being renamed in BC Ferries history. Found HereJust so that no one is mislead by this post, the FAC meeting mentions an interest in renaming the ship. "Ken Thomas" was mentioned in the FAC minutes as a person speaking at that meeting, not as a possible K-Name for the K-Ship.

I was thinking that it was weird that BC Ferries would consider a person name for vessel.

Found HereAre you saying that if the Kuper were renamed, it would be the sixth such case in BC Ferries history? Would take me a while to figure out exactly, but there have definitely been more than six vessels renamed while under BC Ferries ownership. Off the top of my head... Vesuvius Queen, Sechelt Queen, Langdale Queen, Queen of The North, Queen of Sidney, Queen of Tsawwassen, Malaspina Sky.

Vancouver & Victoria as well! And if we want to go full nerd at least two of the European bought ferries were first registered to the fleet with their former names!

I'd say keep an eye open for changes coming in the near future. Refit is a good time to make some updates.

Going off how the Malaspina Sky was re-named, I expect it will be kept fairly low-key until the official reveal. I'd expect we'll get a ceremony featuring representatives from BC Ferries, local governments, the ferry advisory committee, and the Penelakut Band. We'll probably hear about it a week or less before. If they don't swap the name in refit, it will probably be painted on the night before along with the name on her AIS transponder. As for the name. I expect they'll try and go with a 'K' name to keep consistency with the rest of the class, but I also wouldn't doubt they change it up since she looks like a cross between a 'K' Class and a 'Q' Class. Maybe Penelakut? 'P' is between 'K' and 'Q' alphabetically... Though I'm not sure BC Ferries would want to admit (with a straight face) that they have a 'P' Class of ships.

Does this renaming mean there is no more time to see Kuper in service as Kuper?

Does this renaming mean there is no more time to see Kuper in service as Kuper? I don’t know, I think BC Ferries would probably say something sooner than later for rename because the renaming of her seems very community driven.
