If I parked a derelict car outside my building here in White Rock, it would probably be ordered removed within a week. I know we challenged the owner of a van that had been here for two days. But these hideous wrecks imperil our rivers for decades. Why do we have so little respect for our environment? The ' Sidney should have gone to the wreckers after BC Ferries retired her. At the very least, it's good to see that the Queen of Burnaby is still hugging the wall at Deas... evidence that our public ferry company is not going to let the bones of her go to someone who isn't going to dispose of her properly. Neil, I totally agree with your statement regarding how quickly a derelict vehicle would be removed from your street. I have no idea which or how many federal, provincial and local government departments are responsible for ensuring environmental problems are not running rampant in our local waterways. I give you but one example of who is involved in managing such issues in beautiful False Creek, in the core of downtown Vancouver. There are 5 agencies representing Federal, Provincial and City governments. Yup, 5 chefs in this environmental 'kitchen'! One of these agencies is the Vancouver Park Board, who should stick to maintaining beautiful park lands, as they are not equipped to handle derelict vessels. Their staff are not trained in the detection and remediation or removal of vessels deemed to be of a public nuisance or danger. These functions should be the mandated function of the Canadian Coast Guard, and them alone! Five departments, each representing a Federal, Provincial or City government department, interest carries the improbable odds of winning a lottery. ( I admit, I do buy lotto tickets.....just bein' honest).

It has been a few years since I posted on the forums, but figured everyone here would like to see this. Taken this afternoon (28Oct) from a Drone. Sad to see the Sidney in this sort of shape. Queen of Sidney@Mission BC 28Oct23 by Brandon Siska, on Flickr

And now for something not completely different, but at least from a better time ... I believe am fairly certain that the Sidney was on the Comox - Powell River run circa 1990, but I am was having trouble placing this location.

Looks like she's on the approach to Little River to me. Does that background landscape look right for Little River? After going through some of my photos, I think it's actually taken from the Westview side, with Ahgykson Island in the background.

But then there is that opened bow door, something you would not expect at a terminal where the normal practice was to dock via the stern.

This must be Little River looking directly east. The mountains in the background line up.

Looks like she's on the approach to Little River to me. Does that background landscape look right for Little River? I think the curveball factor with this photo is the unusual angle/location in which it’s taken at LR, or the unusual approach of the ship. If the ship was following normal course, that means the photo was either taken from somewhere to the north, either from the rocks at the north end of the terminal, or along the northern beach of Wilkinson Road. The typical photo spots in that area are to the south along the beaches. That said I think this is LR, and the ship is in front of the distinctive mining operation that would give away Texada’s south side in the background.

Looks like she's on the approach to Little River to me. Does that background landscape look right for Little River? I say it's Little River. The open bow doors are the main giveaway for me as well as the landscape in the background. I instantly recognized the mountain slope behind Texada on the top right, Mt. Troubridge. It's one that I have hiked to the top of many times growing up in Powell River and is also the same mountain that towers high above the terminal at Saltery Bay. Thanks for uploading this, brings back many memories of sailing on the Sidney as a young child in the early 90's. It's a shame to see it in it's current state.

With your response, along with input from others, I have to conclude that the location is indeed Little River. The background is I gather the hills/mountains on the far side of Georgia Strait, in behind Powell River. I am thinking that the photographer used a telephoto lens which would make those distant mountains appear to be closer. The time of the year was likely spring when there was still lots of unmelted snow in the high country.
