I kind of mess up on web pages last night for Hemmings. The bewitching hour when my head turns into a pumpkin. Yes, Nice magazine, some one in Freeland must collect cars, because every other month the Hemmings shows up in used magazine bin. Take a look at the Studebaker article at bottom of the page. The pictures are something else www.hemmings.com/hmn/stories/2007/04/01/hmn_buyers_guide1.htmlEmory Lindgard

Thanks for the info, guys. I know that I for one will be making a detour through my local Chapters asap. Though I only grew an appreciation for the 'fishbowl' design as their acitve service around North America was starting to wind down, I appreciate their role in transit systems around our continent since the 1950s.

Added Note from Emory,
I don't know if very many people know that Jim Lehrer of the PBS News hour has a huge collection of Bus Memorabilia.
He owns a 1946 Flxible Clipper that he has named Betsy II.
The conference area in Jim's office includes a photo of an entire bus company.
It all started because his father had a three bus enterprise in McPherson, Kansas, called Kansas Central Lines.
There is an article he wrote about collecting bus signs. I will see if I can paste paragraph from the article in here.
By Jim Lehrer
And now, a word of praise for the pack rats among us:
Whether born or bred, possessed or persevering, collectors ......I have been searching for an enameled metal bus depot sign from the defunct American Bus lines.
American Bus Lines, was a delightfully unique company that provided free pillows and meals, and a by-the-minute refund system for late arrivals on its main line between New York and Los Angeles.
It disappeared into Trailways without much of a trace in the 1950s, but I am certain somebody somewhere has one of its old signs.
1 must have one and I will not rest until I do. Why? Because 1 am a world-class collector of depot signs and other bus memorabilia. Jim Lehrer

Found some Brill talk in this thread, so I thought I would put this here... The buses I grew up with, in the east end of Vancouver. Anyone know why this old Brill has been stashed at the Surrey transit depot for ages? Is it part of some possible restoration project, or used for parts for the ones that are restored?

Thanks for that, Neil. I'm not too sure but I seem to remember hearing about one being kept for parts for the restored brill.
P.S. I've changed the thread title so consider this your place to go for posting about Vancouver trolleys and their history.

I have a friend who's working on the restoration of old buses at the Surrey Transit depot. From what I recall him telling me a while back, they said they eventually plan to restore all the Brills there, but they're short on time and funds.
TRAMS is their group name, and restoring old transit vehicles is their game.

We have those same cars here as part of our GOTrain network. Ours however do not have the snack bars. We have 10 cars and they are expanding the platforms so that 12 will fit. They are going to electrify the main line that runs along the Lakeshore so that acceleration and speed will increase. They are buying new engines that will be able to make the switch. I don't have time to look for a pic at the moment but will add one when I can. They look like Amtrak engines.

I did however find this news release and these two pics of the new locomotives... And this mention on GO's site ( www.GOTransit.ca) about the Lakeshore Line among others... - The GTA might not have Cappuccino Cars - an incentive to take the train from day one here in 1995 that has proven successful - but you are apparently getting on board television (maybe that much more globalization and possibly an unwelcome visual intrusion, but I choose to think of the advertising revenue and am happy that you have to use your radio in order to hear the televisions)... I don't know how many on here are guilty of it... ...I know I am... Today, I was chasing an Oakridge Center ad-wrap, 8061, with a member of this forum, and have a few pictures to share with you: One of a D40LF (New Flyer Diesel 40-foot Low-Floor) Also, one of the West Coast Express from earlier last week... ...and one at Broadway SkyTrain...

Awesome photos there Mikey!
There are a number transit fans that I know of on this forum. Mikey and myself of course and Dane and de60lfr, who doesn't post but is one of the finest transit photographers around and an active member on the Transit-Vancouver Yahoo Group.

Now if anyone was on the QoV trip this past weekend skip all this text and go right to the link as it's the same thing I told you guys. Now for anyone who HASN'T heard the story pay attention ;D A few weeks ago I was taking pictures of a bus coming down Cambie Street at Marine Drive (If anyone is familiar with Vancouver). Now as the bus comes down the road he has to make a left turn and then go into the loop at the end of the route. So as he makes the turn myself and another photographer take the pictures. I then move down into the loop to shoot him coming around the corner. Now after this the driver parks the bus and runs behind a tree. I didn't pay any attention to him until he started yelling at us "You need my permission to take my picture on public property!" This is a common error by drivers as no one needs permission to take pictures of the public on public property (But if the photo is to be used commercially I think different rules apply), so I calmly respond "I'm taking pictures of the bus not you sir." Now after this I decided it was best to leave, but then I hear foot steps behind me. So I turn around to see the driver pointing a disposable camera right at me, so I decided it was in my best interests to return to favor and take pictures of him. Then the driver runs up to me, shoves the camera within centimeters of my face trying to take my picture. That is when I grabbed his arms and pushed him back. He then starts yelling at me saying I assaulted him, which I did not, it was done to defuse the situation. So after that the driver starts to walk back to the bus, so we take the chance to start walking away. But then the driver starts to follow us down Marine Drive back to our car! Well we had enough of this and ran back to the car and left. During this the driver had his phone out and I suspect he was calling the police or his boss. Now for the kicker. If anyone has seen the latest Batman movie you'll recognize the line photo shopped into the photo I have posted bellow. i191.photobucket.com/albums/z114/NoWayHoZa/jokerdriver.jpgChris Cassidy

You did assault him.... but it's not like idiot behaviour on his part would ever allow anything to happen to you.
Once I dealt with a somewhat similar situation where I was pulled over by a Cop for a law that doesn't exist. Being a Crim student, I have a paper copy of the Motor Vehicle Act and Motor Vehicle Regulations which were current-enough so after I was pulled over for my non-violation I went home to get them. I wasn't sure where to find the officer, so since there is only two Tim Hortons in North Van I figured I would try them... and it worked, he was at the first one. So I sat down and asked him to point out which section of the Act or of the Regulations I had violated, which he refused to do (which for Police, if criminal charges are involved, can be wise so they don't screw things up for the Crown) - so then I queried where I could find information so I could avoid a similar infraction in the future, knowing full well I wasn't in the wrong. Then he pushed both documents, one of which is fairly large, onto the floor!
Anyways, long story short, I filed a complaint which was fairly easy to do because of my occupation and this mess which occurred two and a half years ago finally was resolved somewhat recently.
It was incredibly unprofessional behaviour there as well.
In any large organization as we all know there will be several bad apples no matter what the screening process is. It's a shame, really. 95% of transit operators in Vancouver are proficient at what they do and reasonably nice to the traveling public. About 2% seem genuinely awful.

For streetcar fans.... This is a video that was shot from the front of a streetcar as it travelled it's route through downtown and the West End in 1907. The buildings along the route are identified, with many followed through time to the present day. The streetcar passes exactly one car along its entire route; apparently there were only 170 in the whole province at the time. A bonus feature is an extensive conversation with a transit historian- everything you could want to know about streetcars. Narrated by such people as Chuck Davis, Grace McCarthy, Vicki Gabereau, and Dave McCormick. Available Vancouver Public Library.

For this clueless transit person, can somebody tell me what that train is for? My guess is the Canada Line, but that is a pure, uneducated guess.

Nick whatever guess you want to call it you are right.
There should be news on the Blue Line for out here to run from Union Station to Pearson Airport soon. It now falls under fast track legislation that means a small number of people can't stall transit programs in endless studies. One of the proposals called for rehabing and restoring Budd Cars/Dayliners and using them in tandem and longer to run from downtown to the airport in 20 to 25 minutes. Starts to run on existing rails with upgrades and separation of grade done in stages over the years.
One of the delays here has been an attempt by a couple of the neighbourhoods to turn the line into more of a local service with more stops rather than a fast more express style route. Defeats the purpose of an airport to downtown link if you are trying to get people off the roads at the airport. If it takes too long people will continue to take road routes.

The new trains look pretty spiffy in the new design. It will look pretty weird if they get paired with an older white one though.

Oh, lol, sorry... I forgot about those outside of Vancouver. They are an addition of 48 (?) cars to the existing fleet. These are MK II trains from Bombardier, with the current Linear-Induction third-rail system, making it non-compatible with the Canada Line, due to differentiating technology. Here are some pictures of Vancouver's current fleet of SkyTrain vehicles: MK I, mid-80's (First) generation: MK I, early 90's (Second) generation: MK II, 2002 (First) generation MK II, 2009 (Second) generation

They also have different "engine" design.
I am sure it has nothing to do with the fact the patent is up on the current cars.
