I have set this up a couple of days early. This same content was posted almost a month ago by me in the flagship-suggestion thread. So this theme will be no surprise to you.
=================
The January 2014 flagship (nominations done during the month of December 2013) will be the "Yellow Glow of a Ferry's Interior Lights.
ie. a photo that shows the ferry lit-up, with yellowish interior light appearing from her windows or car deck opening. Sometimes this even has a hint of orange colour.
Something like what Scott did in this photo:
BC Ferries - Queen of Cowichan departing Berth 3, Departure Bay. by BCFS, on Flickr
In October 2012, we did a theme called "Dusk to Dawn" where the criteria was time based, ie. photo taken between dusk & dawn.
My idea is different (although distantly related) because my focus will be on the jack-o-lantern look of the ship. ie. Banners for my month will need to prominently show the yellowish light glow from the windows and/or car deck opening.
- and not a ship far far off in the distance, but a photo where this yellowish-glow effect is prominent.
- and not just from a few windows or openings. The yellowish/orange glow needs to be prominent, because that's the theme.
And yes, some camera settings or new ferry LED lights can turn that yellow-glow into a white light, but I really want the yellow/orange kind of colour that many of our ships show at dawn/dusk and at night.
Here's another example: Mike's current signature: Yellow with a hint of orange. I like it.

For those wanting more reference:
The October 2012 Dusk-to-Dawn ballot is HERE
Of the various photos on that ballot, the ones that would fit my Yellow Jack-o-Lantern criteria would be:
3 - great example
5 - barely qualifies, but there is some yellow from car deck opening. A full on side shot would be better (this photo was a dusk to dawn winner, so it wouldn't be eligible for my yellow category anyways)
17 - nice yellow in the forward area of NorEx. (this photo was a dusk to dawn winner, so it wouldn't be eligible for my yellow category anyways)
21 - qualifies, but ferry should be larger & more prominent
24 - good with lots of yellow at the bow. But ferry could be larger.
(so that's 7 photos out of 29 - 5 noted above, plus 2 others who's links are now broken)
So you can see that this theme of mine is a picky & specific subset of the general theme of low-light & night photos. The prominent yellowish-light is a category unto its own. Not a duplication.
The more yellowish-light that can be prominently seen, the better.
Hopefully these visual examples help you to understand what I'll be looking for as you post your nominations during December. Don't try to force an otherwise good night photo into this criteria. It needs to be a natural and obvious qualifier re the prominent areas of yellow (or with a hint of orange) interior light glow.
- By doing this theme now in December, if you don't have great photos yet that fit the criteria, you have this month as an opportunity, with darkness happening by 4:45pm each day.
ps: I reserve the right to disqualify any obvious "not close enough" nominations. I'll be monitoring this thread closely for all of December.

While Flugel Horn was on Sugarloaf Mountain, I was down at the beach beside Berth 1.
