This is a screen shot from the video.Would this be a pre-delivery run, or the actual voyage? There's no rescue boat on board. I don't think it's a good idea to sail without one. It may be difficult for this vessel to respond to any rescue missions on the way to BC. At least she has inflatable life rafts mounted. Notice the good sized wave breaker at the "bow". Couldn't be designed by one of our FSG friends who kept us up to date on the construction of the Coastal Class ferries. Or was it? Does anyone have the scoop on how crew meals are being prepared and there must be some sort of sleeping accommodations. Can't see pitching a tent on the car deck.

I've sent an email to BC Ferries asking for any information they might be able to share about the crew particulars of the voyage. If I get a reply, I'll post here.

Question: Is it unusual for a ship to NOT have a new position this long? I have SAT AIS and Island 3 hasn't reported for over 9 hours. Have not seen that happen in my experience of tracking. edit1: of course just after I posted, it moved! edit2: SAT AIS off again now for 18 hours, have sent inquiry to BC Ferries ... edit3: 1st reply from BC Ferries - The VHF AIS will only be seen when the vessel is within VHF range of a shore station so continuous live AIS is not expected to be visible throughout the voyage. I've asked for clarification as the answer doesn't seem to make sense as SAT AIS is just VHF AIS picked up by a satellite, or someone here has an idea of what's going on? edit4: 2nd reply from BC Ferries - The vessel is fitted with a Sat-C station and does not transmit continuously so the AIS does not transmit to the satellite on a continuous basis. I'm done with this. What is is what is, I'll report whatever data comes in. edit5: SAT AIS now shows Island 3 back at Galati ... I tried to get a shout for the group in an interview yesterday but it wasn't included Vancouver Island website tracks progress of Island-Class ferry and other vesselstak

This is a quasi-repost from something I put up when SVI was coming home from her refit, but it's still pertinent so I'll put it up again incase others didn't see it back then...
When BCF has boats coming home on their own power, they must stop a few times to take on provisions. Has it ever been considered to hold open houses each time they do this? Or even to hit targeted ports deliberately? These open houses would be fantastic opportunities to generate free PR eh? Not so much a priority right now of course, but I'm already daydreaming in a post-pandemic world.
Still with me?... These open house tours wouldn't have to be led by the bridge crew nor the deckhands (they probably have enough things to do while in port anyways). The tour guides leading these open houses don't even have to be BCF employees actually. There are tonnes of BCF retirees, and/or ferry fans (like you guys), who would actually do this for free! I bet some of you would actually PAY to be on something so unique right?!
Back on the PR stuff, I'm not talking marketing just for BCF. I'm talking free PR for anything/everything related to BC provincial tourism. I'm talking about tourism boards from the interior, the island, the sunshine coast, the Queen Charlottes, the northern communities, plus any/all businesses/operators (eg: hotels, fishing lodges, festival promoters, wineries, ski resorts...) interested in a marketing opportunity unlike any other.
For smaller boats like the Island-Class, it might not be worth it, but for Salish-Class size and up, you can use your imagination how limitless this can be.
What do you think guys? Is this a stupid idea not worth mentioning again? Or is this something else?

If I remember correctly didn't BC Ferries do this with the Coastal Class vessels and the lead up to the 2010 olympics? I seem to remember seeing a picture of the Coastal Celebration under the London Bridge before the olympics. (I think this photo is actually on the vessel in the same location as the ship-related documents)

MV Island 3 has dropped off radar ( AIS ). I tried entering it in the vessel search bar and Island 3 show back at the ship yard in Galati and name of the vessel is Island 5. Very odd.

I noticed that as well. Earlier today, the Vessel Finder site had a more recent position, while Marine Traffic had the Romanian shipyard, but that is now seventeen hours old. Maybe she is indeed stopped off the Algerian coast.

Maybe she is indeed stopped off the Algerian coast. This tracking site might still be showing this vessel of interest, but as a Passenger ship on satellite with no full data. MT shows this as well on the other ships that are outside of full data collection radars. On this site, the vessel shows a green blip (partly hidden by that yellow blip on this image, the closer you get the more you see of the blip). You might see more data eventually from within data coverage areas before this ferry exits onto the Atlantic.

Sure like to know why Island 3 kicks back to Island 5 on the marine traffic website sitting at the docks in Galati.

I've been communicating with BC Ferries about Island 3/5 and am waiting on a reply about the AIS status.
edit1: No reply today, starting to not expect one ...

Just got an updated blip with info. This is the same blip I've been watching. Sometimes it shows a generic code, and sometimes it shows info. I guess it all depends on info coverage areas. Like the other BCF deliveries, this blip may show a generic code while transiting the Atlantic. Just watch that blip of interest showing the same course either at the top of the 24 hour clock (0000PDT) or twice a day on those long crossings.

If you look on Marine Traffic you can see there is a tug that left Galati 3 days after Island 3, that is on the same track, and is using MMSI 375379000 that Island 3 originally had (Island 3 now has MMSI 264900108, which is Island 5), except that the tug destination is listed as Venezuela ....
This is all just hearsay and coincidence, but if they'd just given it a real name and MMSI to start with ...
If this kind of post is out of line let me know and I'll delete it.

Now getting closer to the Atlantic Ocean and the big test. Can a ferry like this one handle an open sea like the one this is about to transit?

In contrast, here's a video of the first two Island ships aboard the Sun Rise as 'passengers', let someone else worry about the waves! I've added the video to the Island 3 page at patbaywebcam.com/island3.phpedit: My Biden moment has passed and I've corrected where I had labelled the ships as Salish class ... tak

Would this be a pre-delivery run, or the actual voyage? There's no rescue boat on board. I don't think it's a good idea to sail without one. It may be difficult for this vessel to respond to any rescue missions on the way to BC. We didn't have rescue boats on the Salish delivery.

If you're interested, I've added tracking for Island 4 at patbaywebcam.com/island3.php. Click on the Island 4 ship button on the left side of the map. I'll clean up the page and add voyage stats later today. tak

Tak22-thanks for what you do! A geek here, and I check on the ferry voyages daily. I also take interest in the movements of all the Ciast Guard vessels, and the leased Atlantic Marine ships. I work with vessel management for a government agency yet find your site so much more interesting. Thanks again!
