Wow. That Italy-Uruguay game was possibly the most ridiculous game of the entire tournament. I could give you my thoughts, but I am not an Italy fan - instead, I shall let the Italian friends on my Facebook page explain their disdain:
Brutal loss for the Italians, and quite the upset overall.

Suarez is Spanish for vampire - or rat.

I don't agree it was an upset. Remember... Italy didn't get out of the group round last time either- and Uruguay made the final four. The red card Italy got was justified, and the Italians, along with the Spanish and the English, need to stop whining and making excuses, and perhaps consider that the game is developing past their traditional game plan. Learn from the Dutch, and the Chileans.
Suarez may have bitten... or the Italian player may have taken advantage of his reputation, as well as the proximity of head to opposing shoulder to try to even up the manpower.

I have read (on Face Book, IIRC) that 'Canucks' is a FN (First Nations*) word meaning 'maybe next year'. Now I know.
* For those of you who are Americans - in Canada it no longer acceptable to call native Canadians 'Indians'. The preferred term is 'First Nations'.

With 4 of the 5 South American 2nd-round nations placed in matches against each other, conspiracy theorists might claim that it is to ensure the quick exit of at least 40% of that region in the next round.
But that's just the way that the bracket happened.
Still, 5 nations from South America through to the 2nd round is impressive.

Since this afternoon, I've been trying to think of a sports event that astonished me more than Germany's 7-1 demolition of the home side... but I can't. Could not believe what I was watching. Officially, it tied for Brazil's worst defeat ever, but in truth, it was by far their worst, considering that in 1920 when they lost by six goals they didn't have the reputation of a five time World Cup winner.
No Neymar and no Silva, but the Brazilian defense was so completely at sea in the first half that not even their central defender could have made an essential difference. The German win was not a shock; Brazil had not given many observers confidence that they could really win it all. But this blow out was one for the ages.
Tomorrow, the Dutch may be missing Van Persie, who sounds like he is having a nasty bout of expelling body fluids... fortunately, if he is able to play, the temperature in Sao Paulo is only forecast to hit eighteen, rather important if he is seriously weakened. Hopefully, it will be a contest, but the Dutch may have to be carried by Arjen Robben. Whoever prevails, they surely won't be looking forward to facing the Germans after today's events.

The Brazilian team exhibited a classic case of having their heads totally in the wrong space. Holding up a picture of Neymar as the National Anthem was being sung was but a glimpse into the 'state of mourning' the Brazilian team was about to carry onto the pitch. The astonishing loss to Germany sets up a very interesting scenario for the Bronze Medal game to see what mind set the Brazilian team will display. The Brazilian team manager will be under the microscope in terms of how he prepares his team for its last game of the tournament.

I was just thinking about all the vigorous anti-FIFA, anti- World Cup demonstrations that took place in Brazil before the tournament... the main message being, don't get invested in this cake and circuses extravaganza when the nation has so many problems to confront, where the money would be much better spent. But Brazilians did get invested, only to have their team melt down in unprecedented fashion, and fail to redeem themselves even a bit in yesterday's meaningless third place game. So, from a home team standpoint, it was all for naught after all. I have to think the protesters must be feeling... I'm not exactly sure what... but vindication must be a part of it.
Today's final has been characterized as the best team against the best player. One has to go with the best team, though I would love to see Messi dazzle us along the way.

Can someone please explain to me how 'just sayin' adds anything to what someone has just said? It never occurs to me to write 'just writin' at the end of a post.
Just wonderin.

Just wonderin. It really doesn't. But all the "hip" kids seem to be incapable now of saying "I don't mean to offend you, but" before telling their friend that they have bad breath. They perhaps need to learn the language better. Just sayin'

I actually wish that the term "First Nations" would catch on here in the States. I've personally refused for many years to call anyone an "Indian" who is not actually from, or descended from someone who is from, India. And the term "Native American" has always seemed a bit clunky to me. But First Nations is a fairly elegant term, and one that I try to use occasionally. Usually, however, I am met with a blank stare unless the person I'm talking to has a view of the world that extends beyond the US borders.

Yeah, the term "First Nations" is much better than "Native American," IMO. After all, anyone who is born here in the US is a native American, so that term doesn't really work, and "Indian" is completely wrong too.

There was a thread one for fantasy ferry routes, etc.one upon a time in the forum. In reading EG Fleet's Day Room I saw an old schedule at the bottom of the page. One route was from Gooseberry Point (just north of Bellingham) to Orcas Island. How cool would a route from Bellingham to Orcas be again? Maybe from Fairhaven? Recently, I had been shooting a property in Jericho, (Vancouver's west side) having done a few trips there for different time of day shots. Having to drive back and forth through downtown, how would a route from West Vancouver (really pissing off the locals) over to Jericho or Spanish Banks? Would be a good route for the old Albion ferries!

This story kind of raises my eyebrows... although I've read others like it.
When, in the history of conventional warfare did someone tell their adversary, 'We're going to attack you from the air, in this time frame'... warning said adversary to get all important personnel and infrastructure out of harm's way. I realize that there is an intimidation factor here, but there's also a 'heads up' factor that seems a little bizarre.

Er...since I just swapped that particular item out with another photo, I'll post both sides here so people don't go looking for it and find it gone: I have always appreciated that Black Ball put what vessel was running on what run. (Interesting to note that the Iroquois is working two routes. She must have been running the Bremerton route in the day and doing her usual "Night Boat" duties to Victoria.) This is one of the oldest schedules I've got in the collection. I was scanning it in due to the Whidbey Island run there and that second boat--the Washington--as there were two of them and I was getting them worked out as to which went where and worked for whom. If you're interested, you can see the entry I posted on my blog here: www.vintagenw.blogspot.com/As I put in the blog, so far as I can tell, there exists exactly one photo of the "other" Washington.

I wonder where North Beach is on Orcas Island... and what that terminal looked like... I have no idea what the terminal would have looked like way back then, but this map shows you where North Beach is, right at the top of the island where it says "North Beach Public Access" on the map below. North Beach is low bank and pretty shallow out for a ways, so I'm not sure where a dock would/could have been, perhaps a bit to the east, closer to Terrill Beach Road, maybe where Bartell's Resort used to be. Any such dock was well before my time.

Down here in Seattle the downtown area is booming with construction activity. In the area just north of downtown, known as the Denny Triangle, you literally can't walk two blocks without walking next to a major construction project. This prompted this ferry-inspired meme for this photo... How many construction cranes in this pic? How many construction cranes in this photo? by SolDuc Photography, on Flickr
