I rode the gondola car up/down Sulphur Mountain, near Banff, AB. This was in mid September 2014. Besides enjoying the ride and the views (both on board views and the destination on top of the mountain, looking down at Banff and area below), I also found myself drawn to the gondola operation in a transpo-geek way. I suppose that's natural for someone like me. The fluidity of the never-ending line of gondola cars, the randomness of how some cars took longer to load or unload than others (causing a short delay in the stream), the design of the car for rider experience, etc captivated me for my visit. Take any kind of transpo-nerd and show him some different form of people-moving-operation, and he will be interested... Here are a couple photos of the cars - they are all 4-person cars. We liked the experience of a smaller car which was more quiet and peaceful, compared with other tramways that have cars for 10+ people. Here is a video of the cars in action. ....later, I will post my on-board gondola ride video.

...and my ride up/down on the Sulphur Mountain gondola
Nice views of Banff, and a good view of the gondola operation.

On the buses - 7 October 2014. Old Brill trolley buses, in 'storage' & for sale, in the 'ghost town' of Sandon, BC. A step back in time. Some of these served in Vancouver, some in Calgary. There are maybe 15 old buses in Sandon; an interesting place, for sure...

Was aboard the Moyie yesterday. Good tour, the restoration is very well done. I highly recommend a visit to others. Photos to come later.

Props to estate2014 for bluffing about having the Chilliwack as the only vessel on route 3 over the Christmas Season, and subsequently deleted his post.
Sorry man, it was just too obvious. 'Repairs and Painting' do not take four months.
Deck Cadet over-and-out.

Yep. It's been 3 years since I joined WCF. A scary Halloween that was for everyone else on this forum!

Years ago, I posted a 'news story' about BC Ferries buying an aircraft carrier which had a capacity for 1100 cars or something... pretty silly idea, when you think about it, but I seem to recall a couple of people didn't quite get that part. No one seemed to have a problem with the post, though.
Have we gotten more serious through the years? Not a rhetorical question, since, as I say, I'm not sure how I feel.

In my opinion, your "USS Benedict Arnold" post was an obvious parody (or should have been obvious, to a typical reader). It wasn't a juvenile trick. You also didn't accumulate a history of silly time-wasting posts within a short time-frame (a bunch of guess-where games, and a few other fake service-notices). In other words, you had established a reputation with most forum readers, where most of us knew to expect some clever parody and most of us knew that you weren't producing an overabundance of fluff posts. You had the maturity to know how to apply parody to an adult discussion-forum setting. So, yours was a different situation from what happened earlier this week.

Eight years ago, I thought that America electing a black President was the most amazing thing I'd ever seen in politics... but now Rachel Notley has decimated the Conservatives in Alberta. Wow. Double Wow. I was following the campaign and noting the polls, thinking, naah, those prairie folks will return to their roots on election day. No way could the NDP hope to take Alberta. Couldn't happen.
It did. Amazing. Particularly, the vote count from most Edmonton ridings. And listening to the pitch perfect and gracious victory speech from the new Premier, I couldn't help thinking, migawd, I wish this woman had been born west of the Rockies... Christie would have been back on CKNW by now.
Just goes to show: never give up on politics, or the possibility for change. Voldemort may not be Prime Minister for ever.

Late Premiers Ernest Manning, and Peter Loughheed and others will no doubt be rolling in their graves today as the last bastion of provincial Progressive Conservative Party 'Blue' has fallen.
Voldemort is definitely not a happy camper this morning either, aw shucks. The NDP winning in Alberta? What were the 'Vegas' odds on that happening? Then again, the NDP win last night in Alberta is just a reminder of that the B.C. NDP did NOT accomplish last time around, and a victory was there for the taking. So unfortunate.

Kind of amazed me that Jim Prentice saw the results and not only resigned the leadership of the PCs, but his own seat. How many people in his riding would have voted for him if he had been honest enough to tell them that he wasn't interested in representing voters if he couldn't win all the marbles? But then, this was a guy who, when analyzing the recent setbacks in Alberta's economy, told average citizens, "Look in the mirror". He is the last of a long line of Alberta PC leaders who had an incredible sense of entitlement.
I think Adrian Dix was a very decent, principled man who perhaps was not quite cut out to be a political leader. The NDP has an unfortunate history of sometimes choosing leaders who are ideologically correct but perhaps not electable (i.e. Bob Skelly). But, boy, did the Alberta NDP get it right with Rachel Notley. And looking at the small breakthrough in conservative PEI, with an 11% result for both the NDP and the Greens in their recent election, one can't help but be optimistic for the future of progressive politics.
But despite my lifelong affinity for the orange troops, this fall I will be casting my vote for whatever party has the best chance in my riding to defeat the Harperists. My concern for this country over rides my narrower biases.

Adrian Dix, I agree was is a very decent guy who obviously didn't get the memo titled: 'Nice Guys Finish Last'. The NDP hasn't always done a very good job at looking at their leaders in terms of 'electability'. Changing gears into the 'political/marine (mis)- management' announcement yesterday by the 'we know best' Federal government, that the Harbour Centre Coast Guard Offices will be closed and all duties transferred to Victoria. With the closing of the Kits Coast Guard Station and now this announcement, Port Metro Vancouver will be remotely monitored from Victoria. No 'live' eyes on the daily operations of Canada's largest port and one of the busiest on the West coast. The recent oil spill incident in English Bay was a glaring testimony to mis-management, despite all Transport Canada's bla bla bla to the contrary. Imagine running the Feds latest brain storm of removing live-eyes from Port Metro Vancouver past Port authorities in Los Angeles, New Orleans, New York, Rotterdam etc., and the U.S. Coast Guard! Hint: Be prepared for a torrent of 'W.T. F.' comments! One would hope that our elected officials and the various agencies/departments that they administer would come to their environmental senses.

FOX Sports here in USA has been doing a great job of covering the Women's World Cup Soccer games being played in Canada. They have been using Vancouver to anchor their broadcasts from a temporary structure built north of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games Caldron and have shown good views of the city. The iconic north shore mountains have provided a good backdrop. The "anchor desk" is on the middle deck on the left side and the "living room" is on the first deck on the right. The Women's World Cup action is wrapping up this week with a semi final game today leading up to the championship this weekend. So happy to see the caldron lit today. And, the sky has been mostly blue in Vancouver during this entire run (in keeping up with the theme of this thread).

Today wasn't a postcard perfect day in Vancouver for the Women's World Cup Soccer Final as there was a lot of haze and smoke in the area. Hard to see the north shore mountains. My forum colleagues in Vancouver and the area can fill us in what happened as to why it became so smazy this day. Couldn't see the north shore mountains today on TV. The Caldron was lit and is such a beautiful sight. Brings me happy memories of attending the 2010 Winter Olympic Games (when we wore a little bit more layers than we did today). It was fun to see this area filled with people these weeks during the soccer matches. Very happy to see the Caldron remains on its site and used during special occasions. I enjoyed every minute of these broadcasts by FOX Sports here in the USA. To see Vancouver Harbour each day, the SeaBus fleet doing their crossings, float planes, so much more. I guess this week the set comes down and this part of Vancouver becomes quiet until whenever another great event happens again. Hats off to Fox Sports for doing a great coverage and Team USA for winning the Cup. And Canada for pulling out all the stops to stage this.

All the smoke from Whatcom County July-4th fireworks drifted up to Vancouver. ....but seriously, it's smoke from south-coast regional forest fires. Something shifted atmospherically last night, resulting in the smoke blanketing the south-coast.

Made for a stunning,if somewhat eerie sunrise yesterday.

It was a good thing Sunday was the last day of the Women's World Cup. The north shore mountains showed their beauty almost every day during the tournament. Except for smazy Sunday. My TV was set to FOX Sports 1 virtually the whole time as well as the main network (KCPQ). I liked the set and never get tired of seeing those beautiful icons in the background. In live video, recorded video, pictures, and in person. FOX Sports 1 did, most likely, their final show from the set yesterday morning. It was called the "Third Star Show". Team USA was there. And they created some good chores for janitors as well. One final freeze frame as I close this subject on this thread:CONGRATULATIONS TO TEAM USA!
I kinda wish they could keep that set standing. Makes for a good little covered observation deck for viewing harbour action and a broadcast anchor spot for future events.
Now, the horn sounds and the charge is on! It's cowboy hats time again in Alberta!! I love watching the Calgary Stampede on CBC.
