Well, for Christmas I got this game called "Ship Simulator". This game was just released in August 2006. I was happy so see that there's now a game that you can operate ships in, seeming they've done Planes and Trains now. I was quite impressed with the game, and especially with the graphics, as the water is nearly real looking. There's only about 8 ships you can operate with this game, but there was an expansion pack that was just released this month, to go with the game, giving another 6 ships. The ships you can operate in the Game are: Water Taxi (think FCF), Tugboat, Speed Boat, Harbour Patrol, Cargo vessel, Cruise Yacht, Cargo Vessel, and the Titanic. The add on has a Cruise ship, several tug boats, and another Cargo type vessel. There's also a bunch of missions to do, and you can also edit your missions. There's also a forum you can participate on for discussion on the game, and you can challenge members with missions that you've created. But I was also interested to see that there are already plans in the making for Ship Simulator 2007, set to come out later on in the year. Some plans include: RO-RO Ferry, open sea missions, being able to operate any cranes on cargo vessel, lowering of davits with lifeboats attached, designing your own vessel, and many more neat additions. Official Website: www.shipsim-secure.com/Forum: www.forum.shipsim.com/Anyways, not trying to make a huge advertisement, but I'm just recommending this, as it's quite the game to play. But here's some screenshots that I've taken, of the game.... Uh oh, we've got a problem....... I think we've gone aground.... Grounding, gone really bad....

Well, it's easy in New York Harbor... the whole thing abruptly turns into bedrock at about 42 feet of depth, doesn't it? [edit: continuing on] Checked out the demo vids and that looks like a lot of fun. I'd consider it if it weren't what I already do for a living (at least, some of it) and, well, I don't want to spend my time away from work simulating work.

Okay, I got the demo to download after I finally got onto the site. I think I need more RAM though...kaa-chunk kaa-chunk...the sound my old ENIAC trying to run the software! Maybe if I lower the detail levels for the time being...reminds me of Flight Sim. I swear Microsoft has their hands in the microprocessor and RAM industry in a big way; ever notice their newest software is always a little too much for the average computer system of the day? Short rant!

Lately I've been getting back into this game when I have the time. It can be addicting at times. But I keep meaning to purchase the latest version of this game, seeming I have the original version. The latest version actually includes Ferries! Two Ferries even! You guys might recognize this one, especially Cadmunkey . The MV Red Eagle. www.shipsim.com/img/ships/full/redeagle/redeagle1.jpgThen there's also P&O's Flagship MV Pride of Rotterdam. www.shipsim.com/img/ships/full/prideofrotterdam/prideofrotterdam1.jpgTo purchase Ship Sim 2008, you must buy it online at their website. I recieved an email from these guys, which informed me of the Ship Simulator 2009 version coming out early next year. It should include more ferries. They're also taking on suggestions, if you can provide every single stat on the vessel, such as speed, acceleration rate, horsepower, etc....Would be neat if we could get a BC Ferry on there....(Coastal Class). This game is European based anyway, so a Coastal would be perfect. Anyways, I'm not trying to make this sound like an advertisement, seeming I find this very neat and wanted to share it with you guys. For more info, go to: www.shipsim.com/products/ship+simulator+2008.php

Thanks, Chris, perhaps they can include Departure Bay and Horseshoe Bay and test them powersliding into each destination. That would be fun!

I love this game! Own it meself - I'm too lazy to look at charts so I end up grounding about half the time. The other 50% I win.

I just got the new add-on pack for Shipsim and it includes, a cruise ship and tug with azipds. They are interesting to drive to say the least! The charts are quite hard to read and I quite often ground too.

I downloaded the demo, and tried playing it a little bit, but my poor old laptop just can't handle it, even though it apparentlyEspecially since the mission that comes with the demo has just about everything they could throw in - rain, huge rollers, and changing light conditions. Once I get a new computer (hopefully in the near future), I think I might buy this game.

Same here, demo even on a P4 lagged extremely, I will be looking at a 400 dollar dell to see if it can run with a graphics update.

Dudes I am running Shipsim 2008 on my roid rage computer and it barely gets by sometimes. It is not a very demanding game, it is just not to efficient. My favorite thing to do is drive the Red Eagle around as it has the exact same drive system as the chilliwack does. I moded the controller system so it will be controlled on an x-box controller the same way my model will with the two sticks.
Cheers,

Somebody should request to get a V Class on the game. It it much more fun to dock having to do a big turn around and everything.
Ideally, it would be really cool if we could have the whole fleet on a game, past and present ships, new and old livery, lifted- unlifted, etc.

The program is based in the Netherlands so not many people know about the ferries here well enough to model them. In order to get a BC ferry in the game someone would have to make a model and present it to the developers.

I wrote a letter to the Managers of vstep asking the if there is interest in implementing the "Ship of the year 2007" and a RoRo in the game, but they replied, they get request everyday and because of the work involved, they will only do it on a sponsored basis. The fee is 20.000Euro per vessel. Anybody interested?
citation:
Markus, Thanks for your interest. Your vessels look really great, and I agree that they would be nice additions to the game. Because we are overwhelmed with similar requests, and because it takes us a lot of time and effort to add a vessel to the game, we only add new vessels on a sponsored basis. The sponsor fee for this is EUR 20,000 per vessel. The vessel would appear in Ship Simulator 2009, due for Q1 2009. Currently, we have sold the current versions of the game to 350,000 customers, so you would reach many people. Is this of interest to you? With friendly regards, Pjotr van Schothorst Technical Director, VSTEP BV
