cbcnews.ca is reporting that $361 million will be spent on upgrading and modernizing 5 Canadian frigates in a Victoria shipyard.
EDIT: CHEK has a more detailed story about the Victoria works.

Nice to see that at least the federal government has not turned its back on Canadian ship yards and Canadian workers. Perhaps they can pay for part of this with duties collected from BCFS's Co. of Victoria, BC.

Must we start the rumor mill on that one Dane?
In fact I will, she is slated not to return to service until NOVEMBER That is a good 14 months and I am going to bet that is over budget for BC Ferries. I think what NewFlyer is trying to point out is that we do not want a dragged out refit with many problems in the middle.

I am surprised at how fast this is starting. Apparently HMCS Vancouver is going to be first, going across the harbour to VicShip on May 5th.
Now if only we'd get some new destroyers to replace HMCS Iroquois, Algonquin, and Athabaskan. They've worked hard for 40 years, and deserve a respectful retirement. I'm not even going to start on HMCS Protecteur and Provider, as they should have been replaced 10 years ago.

On a navy-related topic, reading the 24 Hours rag today, I saw that the Canadian Navy will be involved in Olympics security around False Creek and I assume Burrard Inlet and the Harbour. So maybe we'll see some navy ships in town for the games.
