Maybe do more to facilitate discussions on the romantic aspect of ferry cruising, and dedicate some sections to matters that would be more up their alley. I always thought it would be fun to take someone out for dinner, to the cafeteria, in formal wear, on perhaps the Queen of Alberni, or any of the remaining Vs. How's that for romantic? How about putting some emphasis on the scenery and the dining and shopping, and both onboard and on shore, and other news and events of interest to your average ferry user? And provide an outlet for the general public to vent about ships being late, service being lousy, passengers being idiots and whatnot. I would rather not have some female join the forum just to talk about shopping, she can leave that to her friends who she goes shopping with. Eew, I do not think it would end up being enjoyable seeing threads created with people complaining about ferry service, those people tend to be the "idiot passengers." I find that their negative view of the ferries causes them to be negative passengers.

As for the girlie talk, we could have separate sections designated for that kind of sheeyat, but have common areas to break from the sausage fest once in a while.

Perhaps you should 'pm' some of these ideas to forum member 'Mac Write'. I believe he has a ferries forum that he's looking to redesign to reach a much broader audience.

I was hoping, with this thread, to find more ladies who enjoy the ships as ships, and not some vessel for shopping and sunbathing on. Other women who enjoy the sound of a ship's whistle, the scent of the ferry and share the excitement of boarding these fine vessels. But if there aren't any other ladies who are interested in joining on group trips, then I am quite content to be the only one. I wasn't looking to "dumb down" the forum in order to attract females to join. I was just looking for other female ferry nerds to bond with.

I don't know if broadening the appeal to other interests would be quite the same as "dumbing down". The hardcore ferry geeks can still have their own subsections dedicated to the technical and political sides of ferry operations and endless ferry photos to gawk at, while the lay public can have a place to discuss matters of more mainstream human interest in others.

At some point the forum would get so large and disorganized it would take many more moderators. And besides why would we want people that aren't into ferries on the forum anyways. Isn't there a gazillion other sites for that. Male or female or indeterminate or whatever, ferries is what unites us here.

Yeah, a large disorganized forum would not be pleasant. Ferry geeks only!

Male or female or indeterminate or whatever, ferries is what unites us here. That's the unique thing about ferry fans; we have in our midst four genders. I refuse to say whether I'm 'indeterminate' or 'whatever'. The tests were inconclusive. The problem of attracting more female fans is a difficult one, given that, as has been remarked, most fans of great big metal things that carry cars and belch smoke are male. Apparently, though, Esquimalt Queen is a good sport, and the mob accompanying her seems to be on pretty good behaviour, by male standards. If no more female recruits can be rounded up for forum outings, perhaps, as a last resort, a couple of members could volunteer to go in drag to even things out a bit. I happen to think that Flugel Horn would look quite fetching in capris and heels, although the facial hair and Tilley hat might be a bit off putting.

Neil, I find it interesting such a suggestion coming from you... I think it would be easier to use magic marker to give Donella a mustache and goatee so that she aligns better into the correct gender category.

I was young, I needed the money for school...... ;D

The visuals that keep popping into my head are making me feel very queasy and my breakfast is threatening to make make a return engagement. I would love if more ferry fenatics of the female gender joined the board. We had a few postings from a lady who worked for the ferries and had a link to a great group of pictures.

When my sister got married, we had some time to kill before the reception, and I took a few family members on a tour of Coombs, and we had a coffee at the Old Country market, You know, the place with the goats on the roof, I was sitting in the restaurant in my TUXEDO! Boy did I ever felt out of place there.
