I'm not sure if there is another thread on this, sorry if there is.
At Tsawassen at night, what vessels tie up. To my knowledge it is . . .
Berth 5 - SOBC Berth 4 - QofVancouver Berth 3 - QofAlberni
and thats it.
Also what about Swartz
Berth 1 - SOVI Berth 2 - QofSaanich Berth 3 - Queen of Cumberland Berth 4 - Mayne Queen

A good topic to revive, Captain Pickard.
re Swartz Bay, don't the Mayne & Cumberland use 4 & 5 or 5 & 4.
I'm just assuming that they take the berths at the end of the row....or at least that's where they spend their mid-day breaks.

At SWB, Mayne usually takes berth 5, Cumberland takes 4. Saanich takes 2, and SOVI takes 1. Berth 3 is usually left empty.

I take it the Queen of Nanaimo ties up at Long Harbour then?

That's right. That's her home port.
I imagine when the CC goes into service, she'll tie up at SWB berth 2 each night.

Here's a tie-up schedule a lot of you may not know: the ferries of the San Juans. OK, I know this is a BC Ferries thread, but since it's the topic of tie-ups, I'm throwing it into the ring.
Summer schedule tie-up at Anacortes: I'm not sure if this order is correct - I'm just guessing. Barnacle and/or Evergreenfleet will know for sure. this is my best guess based on what time the ferries end their day, and which ferries are first up in the morning
Slip 1: Hyak (last one done - ends at 12:00am tu,we,th,fr - ends at 3:25am sa,su,mo) Slip 2: Elwha (1st one done for the day - ends at 7:50pm) Tie-up Slip 1: Kaleetan (2nd one done for the day - ends at 9:05pm) Tie-up Slip 2: Chelan (3rd one finished - ends at 11:20pm)
Friday Harbor tie-ups: Tie-up Slip: Evergreen State
Now, the ferries will change at the end of July when Yakima comes back, and Kaleetan gets sent back down sound, but this is how it is now. Barnacle and Evergreenfleet, feel free to change the slip order at Anacortes since you know better than I do how these boats really tie up.
For the rest of the year, when there are only 4 ferries serving the islands, the tie-up schedule is different. The #1 (international), and #4 (inter-island) vessels tie-up in Friday Harbor. The #2 & #3 boats tie-up in Anacortes.

This tie up is obvious at Duke Point, the Coastal Inspiration docks in berth 1 for the night. ;D

At SWB, Mayne usually takes berth 5, Cumberland takes 4. Saanich takes 2, and SOVI takes 1. Berth 3 is usually left empty. There's an article on the Cumberland about one time when the crew of the Cumberland had to help a passenger out and pay for them to stay at a B&B overnight on one of the islands because the Cumberland and Mayne Queen switched berths and the passenger walked onto the wrong ferry.

You are probably correct about berth 2 for the CC, but I was told by someone I know who works on the SOVI that it could be berth 3. If this is true, then what was the point of constructing the new "floating dock" for berth 2?? Or would it continue to dock there and just tie up in Berth 3?

The #2 & #3 boats tie-up in Anacortes. There's a bit of flex to slips 1 and 2--there's a bend in the approach to slip 2 which makes getting a fuel truck aboard just about impossible--and the tie-up slips are actually #3 and #4, but that's correct otherwise. re Swartz Bay: Berth 3 is normally left open for the Skeena to come and go. If the Saanich is tied up she is in Berth 2. As she is a double ender she has no big problem making the approach.
Getting a V into 3 is a little harder, since it is boxed in by Berths 2 and 4 can't just swing in alongside and nudge her in; a much longer approach from out in the channel is needed. Watched the Saanich back in last year at the end of a 10pm sailing from TSA, and it took them about 15 -20 minutes to inch her in.
Berth 3 was originally Berth 2, before the current 2 was built for the QofA in 1976. It was the primary Berth until that time, after 2 was built Berth 1 took over that duty.
When there were only four berths the summer tie-ups would look something like this: current berth #s in brackets
Berth 1 and 2(3): QofVictoria, Q of Saanich Berth 3(4): Queen of Sidney (for route 1a) Berth 4(5): Mayne Queen (or Pender Queen/Saltspring Queen) -- either the primary or secondary vessel may have home ported on one of the islands; MDS vessel would have to have tied up at Fulford.

I'm assuming you mean it's the Skeena that has no problem with berth 3 because she's a double ender. The Saanich may have her issues, but I tihnk she still knows her bow from her stern, but that does make sense why it would be difficult for a single ended ship to back into berth 3.

It's harder to back into berth 3, because both sides of the berth are lined with wing walls. Meanwhile Berths 2 and 1 have one side lined with wingwalls, therefore making the approach easier because it doesnt have to back in from out in the middle of the channel.
