Great scene, Flug, and Luke, your shots of the birds and beach are stunning! Mt. Rainier was out in all of her glory today. Here's a view as seen from Rhododendron on the Point Defiance-Tahlequah crossing: While waiting to depart Point Defiance on Rhody this afternoon, I caught sight of this guy on one of the ferry dolphins:

The Quebec City bridges: Pierre Laporte Bridge (opened 1970) I wonder what the original, short-lived name of the bridge was, before they renamed it sometime after October 1970. - or maybe it wasn't renamed until a few years after the assassination?

The older bridge in behind the Laporte Bridge is a railway bridge, built as part of the National Transcontinental - Grand Trunk Pacific Railway project of the early 1900's. It was a link in the long route between Moncton, NB, and Prince Rupert, BC, that was to have allowed the Grand Trunk Railway of Canada to take on Canadian Pacific for the Canadian trans continental railway business. Things did not exactly work out as planned. Today, the bridge is owned and used by Canadian National Railways, the successor to the Grand Trunk and various other Canadian railways of the early 20th century. The bridge is of the cantilever type, the same type as Vancouver's Iron Workers' Memorial Second Narrows Bridge. Like the IWMSN bridge, the Quebec Bridge also collapsed during construction, not once, but twice. A total of 89 workers died building it, with many more injured. In addition to one rail line, the bridge also carries vehicle lanes and a bike/pedestrian lane. For more info check out this Wiki article. The much newer Pierre Laporte Bridge was built as (and continues to be) a freeway bridge. Wiki says this about its name:

Short answer: That name, the "Frontenac Bridge", was shelved before the bridge was opened to the public. The Pierre Laporte Bridge-the suspension bridge shown in my photo-was first christened the "New Quebec Bridge". The bridge was still under construction when it was rechristened the "Frontenac Bridge". Pierre Laporte was asassinated on October 17th, 1970. On November 6th, the bridge opened to traffic as the Pierre Laporte Bridge.

Could this be the future for 'no frills' car ferry service in BC? ShipSpotting.com© Sushkov Oleg I think you're onto something there, WCK. In recognition of Blair Lekstrom's concerns about empty cardeck space on the 'minor runs', we could name this boat the Capacity Utilization Queen. No space unused, but a bit awkward to load.

There is a new guy on Flickr who calls himself 'BCFCapt' www.flickr.com/photos/64291666@N07/He has only a few photos so far, but they are interesting, especially one of the SoVI in a snowy Active Pass. He is a BCFS 'master', and I am guessing on either the Q Cumber, or the MQ.

Last Friday (6-July), I arrived in Anacortes extra early for the 19:20 sailing to Orcas, so I drove around town and went up to Cap Sante to take in the view Cap Sante viewpoint in Anacortes. You are essentially looking at Cap Sante Marina below and downtown Anacortes. Rosario Strait is the body of water in the background followed by the San Juan Islands. I happened to be up at Cap Sante at just the right time. Some hang gliders were taking advantage of the elevation gain and nice weather Panoramic stitch of a series of photos I took of the March Point Refineries from Cap Sante Looking out across Rosario Strait from MV Yakima shortly before we departed Anacortes

1930's White Motor Company "Red Jammer" buses haul tourists over the Going-to-the-Sun highway in Montana's Glacier National Park. We saw these wonderful buses today in the park. At Logan Pass visitor center: - ps: the Ford Motor Company rebuilt them to run on propane, hence the Ford logo on the grill ------------------ And on the road; photo taken by my passenger.
